The abolition of trusteeism In New York marked the beginning of his episcopate. He confronted a critical diocesan condition arising from differences between Bishop Dubois "Know-nothing" faction became active. He again advised his people to keep aloof from the centres of trouble. He was deeply convinced that all such movements, being as anti-American as they were anti-Catholic, could not possible thrive in the United States. Napoleon III , who received him most graciously, and was dissuaded by him from recognizing the Confederacy. On this visit to Europe, wherever he went, he left nothing undone to create sympathy for the Union side. During the Draft Riots of 1863 in New York City, Governor Seymour invoked the aid of the archbishop to suppress disorder, to which invitation, though he was fatally broken in health, he willingly responded, addressing a large assemblage from the balcony of his residence. His loyalty to his adopted country was well balanced and finely adjusted to the duties and responsibilities of his sacred office. He exercised the strictest vigilance lest American liberty might engender liberal influence tending to minimize the doctrine and discipline of the Catholic Church. He unsparingly condemned those who, through fear of anti-Catholic feeling, were disposed to conciliate their opponents by seemingly harmless concessions. He was intolerant of the slightest modification or innovation in religion unless sanctioned by the Supreme Head of the Church. He believed that the adherence to Catholic faith should be bold, fearless, outspoken and uncompromising in the extreme, and especially so in the face of opposition.

You don't even understand which technologies you're criticizing, and you're criticizing them for things they aren't meant for; it's like saying that since a jackhammer isn't much good for driving a screw, road crews shouldn't use jackhammers. I'm not saying that to be insulting, it's just the truth, and this is the time for you to say "mea culpa" and sit down and learn the truth. XML is a simplified form of SGML for software developers to specify document formats in; it's still complex, and I think it should have been simplified even further, but it's actually usable in real-world apps, unlike SGML. And of course XSLT and XPath are complex, they're development tools. But none of it is even a tenth as complex as that damned SGML was... XML is just a way for programmers to encode structured data with a single set of verifiably working and defect-free tools, rather than having to make a unique, incomprehensible, and often buggy binary format for each application. That's it. It has very little impact on end-users, except that application quality can improve some, and development time can be reduced. The big public hype over XML baffles me, as it's like the public getting excited over the use of SOAP, Java RMI, or CORBA instead of RPC.

John Hughes from the Utica Saturday Globe , May 4, 1895: JOHN HUGHES. John Hughes died Sunday at the home of his daughter on Sunset avenue, aged 70. Mr. Hughes was born in Ireland and came to this country when a young man. He had lived in Rochester, Syracuse and Oswego, and came to Utica about nine years ago. Mr. Hughes was a veteran and a mem- ber of Post Bacon, G.A.R. He served in the war three years with the Sixteenth Regulars, and participated in many of the most important engagements. The deceased leaves two daughters, Mrs. Patrick Hughes, of this city, and Mrs. Thomas Gately, of Syracuse. His funeral was largely attended from St. Patrick's Church Tuesday morning. In the 20th century, movies have been one of the most immediately identifiable signposts. Teens of the '50s might hearken back to Rebel Without a Cause or The Wild Ones , while those of the '60s are apt to mention West Side Story or Easy Rider as pivotal moments. Being born in 1971, my generation's key movie moments took place in the late '70s and early '80s, and can be best summed up in two phrases that will easily resonate with anyone of my age group: the Star Wars trilogy and John Hughes movies. To my generation, Hughes is best known as the writer, producer, and/or director of a string of teen-oriented films from the early to mid-'80s, including The Breakfast Club Sixteen Candles , and Ferris Bueller's Day Off . Virtually all of my peers could identify with at least one of the characters in these movies, and could probably, if asked, recite any number of memorable bits of dialogue from the films.
