Julia Ward Howe
Howe, Julia Ward (1819-1910), American author and reformer, born in New York City. She was associated with her husband, Samuel Gridley Howe, in his humanitarian work and in editing and contributing to the Boston Commonwealth, an antislavery paper. Inspired by a visit to a Union army camp during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Howe wrote the famous poem "Battle Hymn of the Republic," which, after publication in The Atlantic Monthly in 1862, immediately achieved great popularity as a song of the Civil War. After the war, Howe was active in the women's rights movement as a founder of both the New England Woman's Club and the Association for the Advancement of Women. She also headed the American branch of the Woman's International Peace Association. She was the first woman to be elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Howe's works include the Life of Margaret Fuller (1883), From Sunset Ridge: Poems Old and New (1898), and Reminiscences 1819-1899 (1899). "Howe, Julia Ward"

The Battle Hymn of the Republic
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fatal lightning of his terrible swift sword:
His Truth is marching on. I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps;
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps.
His Day is marching on. I have read a fiery gospel, writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,
Since God is marching on." He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before his judgment-seat: Oh! be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!

PEOPLE IN AMERICA #1806 - Julia Ward Howe
By Shelley Gollust VOICE ONE: I'm Ray Freeman. VOICE TWO: And I'm Shirley Griffith with the Special English program, PEOPLE IN
AMERICA. Every week we tell about a person important in the
history of the United States. Today, we tell about Julia Ward Howe. She wrote one of the great
songs of the American Civil War, the "Battle Hymn of the
Republic." ((MUSIC CUT #1: FIFE AND DRUMS)) VOICE ONE: Marching soldiers . . . no end to the lines of soldiers marching
across the land. They came from the northern states fighting to
keep the union together. And they came from the southern states
fighting for a separate Confederate government that would
protect their right to have slaves. In summer and winter, the
fighting continued. The sun burned like fire. The soldiers
marched on. The cold winter winds blew snow in their faces. The soldiers marched on. The United States was a nation cut in two by a bitter struggle over slavery and a state's right to leave the Union. America's Civil War lasted four years. It destroyed the land. And it

Arise, then, women of this day! Arise, all women who have hearts, whether your baptism be that of water or tears! Say firmly: "We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies. Our husbands shall not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have taught them of charity, mercy and patience. We women of one country will be too tender of those of another to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs." From the bosom of the devastated earth, a voice goes up with our own. It says, "Disarm, Disarm!" In the name of womanhood and of humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limit of nationality may be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.

Julia Ward Howe Born on this day in New York City poet and abolitionist Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910) made history by writing the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic after visiting a Union camp in Virginia. "As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,” she wrote with religious conviction. Published in 1862 by the Atlantic Monthly , then put to the tune of John Brown's Body , the uplifting anthem inspired the North to win the American Civil War and free the slaves. When Abraham Lincoln heard it sung after the Battle of Gettysburg , he said tearfully "Sing it again!" "The strokes of the pen need deliberation as much as the sword needs swiftness," she said.

Biography Of Julia Ward Howe
JULIA WARD HOWE was born in New York, May 27, 1819. Her father, Samuel Ward, was a banker, noted for his liberality and public spirit. Her mother was a lady of rare culture. She received a careful education, and in 1843 married D r. S. G. Howe. They made an extended trip in Europe. In 1850 she made a second trip, spending nearly a year in Rome. She took an active part in the anti-slavery movement. During the Civil War she was an active worker in the United States Sanitary Commission. She has been a prominent worker in many social reforms. During the World's Fair, held in New Orleans, she held the position of chief of the woman's department.
In 1854 appeared her first book, "Passion Flower," which was followed, in 1856, by "Words for the Hour." Then came "The World's Own," and "Hippolitus," two tragedies. In 1866 she published "Later Lyrics," which comprised "Poems of the War," "Lyrics of the Street," "Parables" and "Poems of Study." Of all her poems, the "Battle-Hymn of the Republic" is the most memorable. The terrible events of the war greatly stirred her, and it was then that her great mental powers made themselves felt. Later she threw her whole energies in behalf of woman's rights, and carried with her all the fervor of her anti-slavery and war-time crusades.
Besides the poems she has published "A Trip to Cuba," 1858, and "From the Oak to the Olive."

SORRY, WRONG ANSWER!
Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910). Although probably best known for writing the words to the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" using the tune "John Brown's Body," Howe was a well known writer, and advocate for women's suffrage, one of the founders of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, and women's peace conference. She was the founder and for twenty years the editor of the "Woman's Journal" and she edited "Sex and Education", which was a defense of coeducation. In 1883 she published a biography of Margaret Fuller. In 1908 she was the first woman to be elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Trivia Quiz Home

    Mothers' Day Proclamation: Julia Ward Howe, Boston, 1870
    Mother's Day was originally started after the Civil War, as a protest to the carnage of that war, by women who had lost their
    sons. Here is the original Mother's Day Proclamation from 1870, followed by a bit of history (or should I say "herstory"):
    Arise, then, women of this day! Arise all women who have hearts,
    whether our baptism be that of water or of fears!
    Say firmly: "We will not have great questions decided by
    irrelevant agencies. Our husbands shall not come to us, reeking

    taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach

    We women of one country will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own. It says "Disarm, Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice." Blood does not wipe our dishonor nor violence indicate possession.
