In 1861 she wrote the words to The Battle Hymn of the Republic , which became the recognized theme song of the Union during the Civil War. Julia Ward Howe c. 1865 Julia Ward was born on May 27, 1819, in New York City to Samuel Ward, a well-to-do banker, and his wife Julia Cutler Ward. Mrs. Ward died of tuberculosis when Julia was five, and the children were raised by an aunt, Eliza Cutler. In 1843, when she was 23, Julia married 42-year-old Bostonian Samuel Gridley Howe, a fervent supporter of the abolitionist cause but not of women leading active public lives. The marriage was not a happy one, and although Julia considered divorce, she ultimately chose to stay the course. After the War, Mrs. Howe was active in the women's suffrage movement. In 1868, she founded the New England Women's Club and was one of the founders of the the New England Women's Suffrage Association. She continued her writing, although nothing she produced ever achieved the popularity of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," and was much in demand as a lecturer. Battle Hymn of the Republic: Julia Ward Howe Julia Ward was born in New York City in 1819. Her mother died when she was young. Her aunt, who was a strict disciplinarian, raised Julia. When her father died, Julia’s guardianship reverted to a more lenient uncle. Julia became more liberal on social and religious issues. When Julia was twenty-one, she married Samuel Gridley Howe. He was a veteran of the Greek War of Independence and had written of his experiences. He was a radical Unitarian and was the director of the Perkins Institute in Boston. Samuel carried his strict religious beliefs into his work with the blind and mentally ill. He opposed slavery. bodyOffer(24337) Julia became a Unitarian Christian. She believed in a loving God who cared about humanity. She believed Christ set a pattern for behavior and that it should be followed. She became a religious radical. Samuel had been attracted to Julia’s wit and quick mind. However, he believed that a woman’s place was in the home and that she should have no life outside of her domicile. Julia wrote poetry and attended church. She found her life frustrating – her marriage stifling. She did not adjust to being subsumed in the professional life of her husband. She became impatient with the violent and controlling Samuel. He mismanaged the inheritance her father had left her and was a womanizer. Julia stayed with him because he threatened to keep her children from her if she divorced him.

His early years were spent on his father’s farm. In 1835 he entered the factory of a manufacturer of cotton-machinery at Lowell, Massachusetts, where he learned the machinist’s trade. Subsequently, while employed in a machine shop at Cambridge, Mass., he conceived the idea of a sewing machine, and for five years spent all his spare time in its development. In September 1846 a patent for a practical sewing machine was granted to him; and Howe spent the following two years (I 847—1849) ~fl London, employed by William Thomas, a corset manufacturer, to whom he had sold the English rights for £250. Years of disappointment and discouragement followed before he was successful in introducing his invention, and several imitations which infringed his patent, particularly that of Isaac Merritt Singer (f 81 1—187 5), had already been successfully introduced and were widely used. His rights were established after much litigation in 1854, and by the ‘date of expiration of his patent (1867) he had realized something’ over $2,000,000 out of his invention. The Origin of Mother's Day in The United States Julia Ward Howe, Juliet Calhoun Blakeley and Anna Jarvis share the honours for the present day commemoration of Mother's Day. The first mention of the idea of Mother's Day can be traced to Julia Ward Howe suggested it in 1872. Howe, who wrote the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, saw Mother's Day as being dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold, organized Mother's Day meetings in Boston, Mass every year. The first known observance of Mother's Day in America occurred in Albion, Michigan on the second Sunday in May, 1877. It was the actions of an Albion Pioneer woman, Juliet Calhoun Blakeley, that set Mother's Day in motion. Two days before her 59th birthday on May 11th, 1877, three young men, all sons of staunch temperance advocates, were found drunk on the streets of Albion's business district. They had been the victims of anti-temperance shenanigans. One of the young men was the son of the pastor of the local Methodist Episcopal Church. On Sunday (Mrs. Blakeley's birthday) the pastor was so distraught that he had to leave the pulpit before the services were concluded. Mrs. Blakeley, sitting near the front, stepped to the pulpit to take over the remainder of the service and called other mothers to join her.
