INTRODUCTION
Records of a literary magazine published by the Department of English at the University of Missouri-Columbia for the purpose of printing poetry, fiction, and essays of general literary interest with a contemporary approach.
DONOR INFORMATION
The records were donated to the University of Missouri by The Missouri Review on 23 June 1982 (Accession No. 4441).
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection provides a very limited view of The Missouri Review . There is no information on the founding or founders of the magazine; nor is there any indication of how the magazine is produced. The correspondence is extremely limited in years, while the content is confined to the submission of literary works and an occasional request for financial support. The authors' proofs, which compose the largest portion of the collection, do indicate who was submitting poetry during these years, what type of poetry was being accepted, and the process of obtaining author approval for publication.

"Hawaii is a sort of layered culture...it's America. It's a post-colonial small island republic; it's an outpost of Asia; it is the highly capitalized capitol of Polynesia...It represents encroachment from Western capitalism into non-cash economies. I mean, it's an incredibly complex place." "I believe in a politics of recognition, not a politics of assimilation or sameness...If you do believe in homogenization you're going to create blindnesses and exclusions. So in that sense, I think Hawaii's culture and society are very healthy." "I was down in Hollywood..writing comedy...and I wasn't doing very well...and the comedian, the star of the TV show, said, "What the hell are you doing this for? Why are you doing this if you're having such a bad time? What do you like? And I thought, Should I tell him? Okay, I'll tell him...'I like poetry.'" PH: As a poet you observe and describe very precisely, and I think poetry perhaps calls for greater precision than any other form of writing. Would you agree with that?
