To the Editors: The following letter was sent to the Ghanaian ambassador: Honorable Samuel Ernest Quarm Embassy of Ghana 2460 16th Street N.W. 53. On John Hollander's "Dreaming Poetry"
On john hollander's Dreaming Poetry by RC Travis 10/26/99. hollander's exampleof john Milton's Twentythird Sonnet is perfect in this discussion.
http://members.aol.com/gracieami/DrmPoetry.htm
On John Hollander's "Dreaming Poetry"
by R.C. Travis 10/26/99 In his essay, "Dreaming Poetry," John Hollander discusses the history of writing poetry from dreams. Due to the abstract nature of dreams, poems written from, or about, dreams, maintain an increased level of abstraction. This leaves the poems in a position where multiple meanings can be gleaned from the verse. Because the dreamer dreams in images, he is locked into the challenge of finding language to properly represent the dream. Hollander then describes different formulas that have been used to write dream poetry, such as "methinks" and "I dreamed" and others. These formulas were used to tell the reader that the poet was writing about a dream and would therefore put the reader in the frame of mind to interpret the language on a different level than normal poetry. The reader would then know that most of the images and items within the poem would tend to have a deeper meaning than the literal. He then describes the issue of transcription of dreams, by the poet. "The whole question of dream transcription, then, involves something as close perhaps to re-dreaming a dream as it is to working through an interpretation of it." Here I believe he points to the matter that in order for the poet to interpret what the dream meant, and to transcribe the images of the dream into language, the poet must take his, or her, mind throughout the dream in an attempt to recapture the experience. In the attempt to bring the abstract into concrete form, the poet cannot do anything but fail. Because we dream in images, language's conventionality is lost in the process of transcribing the image into rhyme schemes and verse lines. Something of the sort of attempting to place a square peg into a round hole, the corners must be shaved off the original, making a whole new item in the process.

Had been considered for a while and (darn
It!) lost their appeal, some agent of the dark Stabbed at the afternoon as if with a dirk The disappearance of the sun's red disk In a sea of golden dust brought us to dusk An unseen term, after the after-birth, Emerges: We're delivered of our dearth, As when today you rose from bed, warm hearth, Promising kettle, desire's best of health: In the gray distance over a bare heath You discerned, striding toward you, someone's death. One hears such stories with one's eyes unwet: She woke up one day and found that the Tet Offensive had left her widowed with a tot Who broke her heart as if it were a toy.

In all that is the case (Envy, plotting, disgrace, Fault, sin, naughtiness, crime) We were thrown into time, Being's new paradigm: And thrust amidst that plain Unwelcoming terrain No life could remain Unwounded, as the round World's long tale unwound The cord by which we're bound. Abel the shepherd swain And the dark farmer, Cain Bring us around again To death seen in its first Form on earth: murder, worst Crime, wherewith death is cursed. The mark of being unjust Falling on each death must Infect the ultimate dust: Here it was farmer killed Hunter on soil he'd tilled, Founding a bloody guild The farmhands of our foe.

General Editors' Preface
The purpose of the Oxford Anthology is to provide students with a selective canon of the entire range of English Literature from the beginnings to recent times, with introductory matter and authoritative annotation. Its method is historical, in the broadest sense, and its arrangement, commentary, and notes, both analytic and contextual, have benefited not only from the teaching experience of the several editors, but from a study of the virtues and shortcomings of comparable works. A primary aim has been to avoid the insulation of any one section from the influence of others, and more positively, to allow both student and instructor to come to terms with the manner in which English literature has generated its own history. . . . Three: Powers of Thirteen - Fancy-Pants Your bright younger sister whom so many fancy to
Be you was always getting in the way when your friends
Were about. An "altogether inconvenient child
With an alarming memory" one of them said once.
She would help you sometimes when a trick was to be played,
A pompous visitor to be derided, something
Lost, or broken, to be covered for; but for the most
Part, she was up to all her own mischief. From her touch
Nothing was safe. But then, what she did was all for show, Nothing was changed, ongoings of every day outgrew Her goings-on.
