by Jack Hodgins
Reviewed by Peter Buitenhuis
In the Macken Charm , Jack Hodgins has returned to the old stamping ground of his most successful novels the eastern coastal region of upper Vancouver Island. The novel has a wonderful cast of eccentric and wild characters, most of whom are Mackens. Extended to hell and back, the Macken family is a powerful and cohesive social unit. The family is drawn together in the novel for one purpose, an event that unifies the book: the funeral of Glory, young wife of the wildest of the Macken bunch, Toby. The present time of the novel is the summer of 1956 a time of innocence, or at least of naivety. Much of the narrative, however, is taken up with flashbacks of when Glory was alive and brought her spectacular beauty to unsettle and amaze the Macken clan. One of the most unsettled of her admirers is the narrator of the novel, Toby's nephew Rusty, a young man who is shortly to leave the island to attend university. Rusty has long been a star-struck movie fan with dreams of becoming a famous director. He carries around a broken Bell and Howell movie camera, and sees and "shoots" the world as a long-running film. Glory, to him, is "Rita Hayworth . . . Breathtakingly frail and pretty, mysterious as a star." The scenes of the novel often appear as sets, and Hodgins is at his best when describing the tumultuous beauty of the island shoreline, the untidy clutter of its fields and streams, the endless green forests, or the towering glacier above the town.

How serious are you about your writing? Do you have a novel or short story in progress, and would you like feedback from an experienced writer and creative writing tutor? At the Windmills this year we will be getting down to business – with Jack Hodgins, who has helped many a budding author make the step from "aspiring" to "published" writer.
This is what some of his students have said about him:
"I credit him for being the hardest instructor I ever had. He didn't let me get away with anything and I really thank him for that." Gail Anderson-Dargatz, former student and best-selling author of the novels The Cure for Death by Lightning, and A Recipe for Bees.
"What stands out is his ability to ask the right questions. He probably made a bigger contribution to my life than any other writer." Bill Chalmers, former student and author of the novel No More Worthy.

This is what people have said about the Windmill Writing Workshop:
Comments on JACK HODGINS' workshop, September 2002:
Orren Perlman, California
"A fantastic workshop where we could each take away something unique. A good range of writing experience within the group made the workshop collegial and pertinent for me – the right thing at the right time. I got concrete feedback on my writing, a larger framework in which to put my own expertise, and went away with a new way to approach my own work. I'd jump at the chance to work with Jack again, after, of course, the considerable time it will take me to digest what I've learned from him so far. Definitely rates a 10 out of 10 in my book! ( Not to mention the great atmosphere, food, and stimulating colleagues…)"

Jack Hodgins: (His) Story and Place in the Construction of Vancouver Island Jack Hodgins, born and raised on Vancouver Island, uses the Island and its history to create fictional worlds, which in turn help to create a sense of the Island and its inhabitants, thereby both informing and forming the identity of the self and the larger community. The oppositions that govern much of BC, in particular the split between native and newcomer or insider and outsider, can be found in multi-dimensional form in Hodgins’ fiction. Vancouver Island can be perceived as a microcosm for BC as a whole if we think of the physical barriers – water and mountains – to the rest of the world. Place is a formative factor in the psyche of the individual and the community; for example, The Invention of the World is a mosaic in its narrative and in its setting, with a layer of magic realism and downright wackiness, elements of both place and people in BC. The acceptance of eccentricity, even the embracing of it, is appears to be part of a people who live in isolated groups and must figure out ways of co-existing. In former times, the town madman was not locked up or sent away. Instead the unfortunate creature was seen as such and taken care of, if possible. But the boundary of land also imposes a mental boundary. Not all is possible or accepted, and when a character goes too far, he or she suffers the consequences.

A PASSION FOR NARRATIVE: A GUIDE FOR WRITING FICTION Jack Hodgins
ISBN 07710-4188-8. CIP
Reviewed by Janet McKinlay Volume 22 Number 1
1994 Jan/Feb
Jack Hodgins, author and English professor, has written A Passion for Narrative: A Guide For Writing Fiction in the hopes that he will "no longer receive so many letters from former students requesting class handouts that they have misplaced over the years." While he is quick to acknowledge the difficult task of teaching writing through a book, he states that "his own passion for all aspects of narrative makes it impossible for him to keep his thoughts to himself." It is this passion, which is so evident, that makes this book so successful. Hodgins warns, however, that those who are not "already passionately eager to write fiction" should not read this book, because writing is difficult work. While acknowledging that the writing process is not necessarily linear, Hodgins has arranged his book in a way that brings some kind of sense to the "chaos that is writing fiction." He begins with "Getting Started: Finding Stories Meant for You." The rest of the book is dedicated to discussing such aspects of writing as sentence structure, setting, character, plot, point of new, voice, metaphors, symbols, allusions, and revising. The book is well organized with each section following an established format: each begins with a quote from another source on writing or reading, contains a variety of activities and exercises designed to help the aspiring author develop skills and creativity, and ends with a list of recommended reading.

A Working Bibliography of Postcolonial Travel Writing
Barbara Korte, with Kati Stammwitz
The Project
While travel writing in Britain and the United States has received increased critical attention over the last decade, its postcolonial varieties have been practically unexplored - although a considerable body of texts already exists and although travel writers with a postcolonial background have been very productive over the last few years.
In a research project pursued for two years at Chemnitz University, we have investigated various aspects that appear to characterize postcolonial travel writing and would like to discuss them with anybody who has a serious research interest in this field.
We have defined travelogues or travel writing as texts which present, in a basically narrative form, an authentic journey which the writer has performed him/herself.
Compiling a body of texts in this area has proved difficult and time-consuming, as many texts are difficult to access and satisfactory bibliographical resources do not exist as yet. We have therefore decided to make this bibliography available as an aid to further research in this field. It is restricted to a selection of 20th-century travelogues with which we have worked/are still working, and a selection of secondary materials.
