She has to disguise herself as a boy to get back to sea, Vivacia is menaced by the pirate Captain Kennit, the Vestrit family's debts and pubescent daughter Malta threaten to create yet more problems, and Althea's nephew Wintrow is virtually kidnapped from the priesthood of Sa to become a sailor with little more status than a slave. Hobb makes the plot complex but doesn't let it become convoluted, sees to it that the characterizations are consistently superb, and animates everything with love for and knowledge of the sea. HOBB, ROBIN The Farseer Trilogy (Assassin's Apprentice; Royal Assassin; Assassin's Quest) This excellent trilogy is set in a kingdom simply known as the Six Duchies. It is a feudal nation, ruled by a king of the Farseer line. The hero of the book is the bastard son of King-in-Waiting Prince Chivalry. As the story begins, young Fitz is presented to the authorities by his mother, who can't afford to keep him. He is taken from the town of his birth to be housed at the Royal Court, where in time he is trained in the ways of the scribe, the swordsman and the assassin. The Farseers possess a special kind of magic called the Skill, which among other things allows them to pry into other peoples' thoughts and to communicate with each other. When raiders from the Outislands start ravaging the coast and Forging the citizens to become mindless automatons, the King decides to train Fitz in the use of the Skill. However, the Skillmaster loathes him, and goes out of his way to torture him and make him fail. Life at the court is not easy for FitzChivalry. His father, Prince Chivalry, dies in a "riding accident" before Fitz even has a chance to meet him, and old King Shrewd takes ill with a wasting disease. Prince Regal, the youngest of the three princes, who hates the young bastard, puts into action his plans to inherit the throne.

SHIP OF MAGIC by Robin Hobb Robin Hobb has been on my "should" read list (not "must" read) for some time now since reading her Farseer Trilogy ( Assassin's Apprentice, Royal Assassin, and Assassin's Quest ). These are good, enjoyable books. I thoroughly enjoyed Assassin's Apprentice , and the next two books were fine. However, with Ship of Magic , Hobb has vaulted to my "must" read list. Ship of Magic is the first of a series, The Liveship Traders. The basic premise of the series is that ships made of wizardwood, a very expensive wood available in the inhospitable lands of the Rain Wild River, can magically ripen into sentiencea liveship. This awakening takes three generations of captains from one of the trader families of Bingtown, a trading port on the Cursed Shores. Each ship is extremely expensive, and a trader family might have to work for generations to pay one off. This is an interesting idea, but without good writing, without good characters, that is all it would bea good idea. But Hobb has woven a rich interlocking tapestry of people, ships, and situations which kept me glued to the book. While there is no single central character per se , there are several who take center court. There is
