81. US Congressman Jim Hightower Blasts FedEx Payoffs Of The U.S.A. Congress To Rest
By US Congressman jim hightower. Reproduced on the Fedup site with permissionfrom Congressman jim hightower This is jim hightower saying . . .

Fed Ex WRITES ITS OWN TICKET By U.S. Congressman Jim Hightower Reproduced on the Fedup site with permission from Congressman Jim Hightower Thursday, November 7, 1996 Federal Express is the high-flying overnight mail operation that promises "absolutely, positively" that it will deliver on time. But in Washington, it was the Congress that was "absolutely, positively" determined to deliver for Federal Express so determined that Republican Senate leader Trent Lott kept the entire body in session past its scheduled adjournment date, until the weary members gave-up and passed the benefit that FedEx wanted. It's a classic example of how a powerful corporation buys legislation. Both the Senate and House had passed versions of the basic federal aviation act, without a certain [quote] "technical correction" that Federal Express demanded. This "correction" would make it nearly impossible for the airline's employees organize a union something many of them want. So FedEx simply used Congress as its union-buster. Even though neither house had approved the FedEx proviso, a secret conference committee snuck it back into the bill. What did the company use to sliiiiiide its amendment into the bill? Money, of course the WD-40 of American politics.

Jim Hightower to speak at Common Ground Conference Nov. 3-5
October 2000 Following on the heels of last year's conference on "Corporate Domination," the Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice's Common Ground Conference this year is on "Media Madness: How the Media Impedes Democracy (and what are we gonna do about it?)" The conference is at Rollins College in Winter Park, near Orlando. The keynote speaker will be a person well acquainted with the topic and actively working to counter it: author and radio host Jim Hightower. This quick-witted Texan, whose new book is entitled If the Gods Had Meant Us to Vote They'd Have Given us Candidates, has for decades used his insider knowledge of the workings of goverment (he's a former Texas Agriculture Commissioner) and his irrascible with and solidarity with working people to be a strong figure on the populist side who can make us laugh and call us to action. This seventh annual conference by the Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice will be at Rollins College in Winter Park, November 3-5. The flier for the conference underscores the theme of the conference this way: "We've all been disgusted at the useless drivel that diguises itself as news these days. We've longed for accurate information on the important issues. We've seen the media ignore tens of thousands of citizen activsts who've taken our messages to the strees of Seattle, D.C., Philadelphia and to the School of Americas. We've grown up on the corporate propaganda that promotes our society's obsession with instant gratification through alcohol, tobacco, sex and shopping... We're plenty sick and tired of it, so what are we going to do about it? Join us at Common Ground VII for workshops and discussions on ending this corporate assault. Let's claim our right to speak, hear, and participate."

Jim Hightower's Shallow Analysis of the 'Enviropig' By Brian Carnell Thursday, August 30, 2001 For a political movement that's always moaning about how the advertising industry supposedly creates demand for products through appeals to irrationality, some Leftist commentators seem to be masters of the appeal to emotion. Jim Hightower's bashing of the so-called 'Enviropig' is a classic example. One of the major environmental hazards of pig farms is phosphorous runoff. Phosphorus is contained in the feed that pigs eat, but the animals are not able to digest it. Hence, they excrete it and it ends up in area water supplies. A biotech company has managed to create a genetically modified pig that is able to digest phosphorous, which would significantly reduce phosphorous runoff. One would think that advances in reducing pollution would be applauded, but instead Hightower refers to the genetically modified animals as the Frankenpig, which is every bit an silly emotional reaction as is the 'Enviropig' label which is the trademark under which the GM pig will be sold (assuming it ever becomes commercially viable). Hightower reduces the comments made by researchers who created the GM pig as, "one of the white-smocked lab guys who did the hocus-pocus on the pig genes..." Hocus pocus? Is that what we really do with genes these days? This sort of rhetoric is extremely reminiscent of a lot of the dismissive and pejorative stereotyping of biological scientists by creationists.

Ready or not, here comes the "March of Science "
...marching right over common sense, Mother Nature, and us.
Jim Hightower, former Texas agriculture commissioner, does daily radio commentaries (hear them online via www.jimhightower.com ) and speaks around the country. His most recent book, If the Gods Had Meant Us to Vote They Would Have Given Us Candidates, has been released in a revised and updated paperback edition. Write him at PO Box 13516, Austin, TX 78711, call 512-477-5588, or email info@jimhightower.com The latest product of the mad science of biotechnology is a new critter that industry had dubbed: Enviropig. Though you might call it Frankenpig. The Boston Globe reports that big corporate hog producers working with Canadian scientists have financed development of a genetically-altered porker that produces a more environmentally- friendly manure. Manure is a big barrier to the expansion of massive hog factories, because swine excrete excessively, the excretion is especially stinky, and this pig stuff contaminates rivers and our other water supplies, killing fish and causing health problems. So for years the hog industrialists have sought a scientific fix, and now the biotech DNA manipulators have spliced the genes of mice and - get this - E.coli bacteria into pig genes. The result is a pig that they say can digest the polluting phosphorous that comes in its feed ration, rather than excreting the phosphorous, which then runs from these huge hog factories into area water supplies.

Jim Hightower's show at the WDET recording studios, 10/23/98 Well, it was pretty rushed. Jim Hightower was on the road doing his " " program and needed to do one of his radio broadcasts from Detroit. He contracted WDET to produce it for him this given show for him and Judy Adams from WDET recommended the Layabouts to perform music. Due to the short notice, WDET was unable to create an entire studio setup for the band. I guess it worked out, as the various band members could not drop what they were doing to participate.
The discussion side of the program seemed to evolve into environmental and work issues, so we decided to play "Clean up your mess", " Donna Lewis " and " Cadillac ".
The event was enjoyable; we made almost - almost, almost - no major mistakes; and as usual, it was a pleasure to perform.
