Eaters of the World, Unite
By Jim Hightower , Hightower Lowdown Harry Truman said: "No man should be president who doesn't understand hogs." The problem with our recent presidents, however (including los dos Bushes and Bill Clinton) is that, while they certainly don't know pig stuff about the four-legged varieties, they are expert on the care and feeding of those two-legged oinkers who are the CEOs and lobbyists of global agribusiness corporations. With an oink-oink here and a ton of campaign cash there, agribusiness giants are able to dictate America's food and farm policies in both Republican and Democratic administrations. This is why our present policies are so bass-ackwards, discombobulated . . . and stupid. Ag policy is not written for farmers and consumers, the two groups whose well-being logically would be the rationale for having any policy at all. Nor is it written in the interests of workers, conservation, small business, rural communities, good health or even good food. Instead, it's written for the profit and global expansion of names like ADM, Cargill, McDonald's, Monsanto, Nestlé, Phillip Morris, Tyson, Unilever and Wal-Mart. These powers have none of the dirt and grease of honest farm toil under their fingernails. They're well-manicured, soft-hands people who work in faraway executive suites, genetic-engineering labs, banks and the backrooms of governments. With the complicity of our presidents and Congress critters, they've industrialized, conglomeratized and globalized food, a substance that, by its very nature, is agrarian, small-scale and local.

I know this because some folks out in Humboldt County, California, sent a news clipping to me with the reassuring news that three locals who own glass blowing companies there had their homes stormed at 6:00 am on February 24 by federal agents. The three were arrested as part of Ashcroft's nationwide sweep, dubbed

Fleet Tries to Pull a Fast One
JIM HIGHTOWER
National Radio Commentary
January 29, 2003 Radio commentator Jim Hightower. I got a note from the swell folks at Fleet, my credit card company. Actually, not a note, but a Notice:
"This Notice is to advise you that the following Arbitration Provision will be added to your Cardholder Agreement," it cheerfully began. Hmmm, I thought, arbitration. What needs arbitrating? So I squinted at the tiny print they used in this little four-page notice, which had
no eye-catching graphics, no whimsical colors,
and none of the chatty style

you find in other bill stuffers that the companies really want you to ... well, notice. Indeed, it's as though Fleet didn't truly want me to notice this Notice.
But, I thought, don't be cynical, so I plunged into the prose: "This Arbitration Provision will apply to all claims." Claims? Like what? Down in the fine print Fleet told me. Sort of: "The term 'claim' means any claim, dispute, or controversy between you and us arising from or related to this agreement, any prior agreement that you may have had with us or another credit card issuer from whom we acquired your credit card account or the relationships resulting from the agreement of any prior agreement, including ..." yada, yada, yada.

Commentary by Jim Hightower VOTE FOR NOTA
Wednesday, May 29, 1996
As Yogi Berra said," It's deja vu all over again."
The presidential campaign I mean. You thought Clinton, Bush and Perot were an uninspiring choice in '92? Well that was a heart-stopping thriller compared to what '96 has in store for you: Clinton, Dole and
Perot. As Peggy Lee sang years ago: [Music: "Is that all there is? . . . "]
According to pollsters (and according to commonsense), most Americans really would prefer to cast their ballots for NOTA. Who's that? None Of The Above . . . N-O-T-A.
Well, why not why shouldn't there be a NOTA line on the ballot in all elections? This would give us a chance to register our disgust about today's unresponsive political system, a chance to cast a
"no-confidence" vote and have it count.
Common Cause, the election watchdog, reports that 90 percent of today's congressional races are non-competitive, meaning the incumbents either have no opponents, or their opponents are hopelessly
under-financed, effectively giving you no choice. But with NOTA, you would always have a choice, and incumbents would always run scared, knowing they have to give you real reasons to be for them, or

What's for Dinner?
by Jim Hightower
May 29, 2000
In the forefront of this Brave New Food World are the big four global giants who refer to themselves with a straight face as "life science" corporations: Monsanto, Novartis, DuPont, and Hoescht. Pubdate: May 23, 2000 Have you heard of the "Butterfly Effect?" Both a scientific concept and an ecological reality, its essence is that the flapping of a million butterfly wings in central Mexico can have consequences in New York City, Rome, or Hong Kong. The notion is that our physical world is more intricately balanced than we know. Seemingly inconsequential acts in even the remotest area are connected to results far away in both time and space. In the past couple of decades, such brutish industrial practices have increasingly been applied to the very genetic make up of our food supply-and now the Butterfly Effect is beginning to affect butterflies . . . not to mention you and me. The ax wielders are biotechnology giants that are determined to outsmart Mother Nature by manipulating the DNA structure within the cells of plants. They'll take a gene from a fish and put it in a tomato, a gene from a mouse and put it in corn cells, a gene from a peanut and put it in potatoes. The combinations are limitless-Here a gene, there a gene / everywhere a gene, gene / Old McDonald had a lab / E-I-E-I-O." The results are variously known as GA (genetically-altered food), GMO (genetically modified organisms), GM (genetically-manipulated), GE (genetically engineered) . . . or, more rudely, Frankenfood.

Nancho Advisory: Forget oil, natural gas and the explosive factory feedlot methane fog, the greatest energy source in Texas is Jim Hightower. Justly called "America's No. 1 Populist," Hightower tirelessly assails corporate black hats and their legislative hirelings with rage, craft and acid wit. His deftly simple Big Body math exercise below shows immediately and exactly why our modern elections no longer add up to democratic results.
Jim Hightower's
Common Sense Commentary
"The Money Primary"
Thursday, July 22, 1999
Voting already is taking place in the 2000 election for President . . . only you're not invited to participate. Unless, of course, you can write a check for $1,000 . . . or $100,000 . . . and up!
This is the Money Primary, and not only does it precede next year's New Hampshire primary, but this closed-door, balloting overwhelms all others in importance. You see, to be a major contender for either the Republican or Democratic presidential nominations in 2000, it's calculated that each candidate will have to have amassed a war chest of $25 million by the end of this year. That's roughly $75,000 a day that these presidential wannabes must bank, each and every day of 1999, including Saturdays and Sundays. Miss one day, and your quota doubles to $150,000 for the next day.
This is Jim Hightower saying . . . If you wonder why we don't get candidates who are for the people . . . pay attention to who's buying whom in the Money Primary.

Features Index Sonoma County MetroActive Central Archives Texas Twister Lefty-at-large Jim Hightower blows into town By Patrick Sullivan A SEA OF SOFT MONEY swirls like sewage around our ankles as the American public watches a pair of empty-headed presidential candidates twitch feebly at the end of their corporate strings. Our nation's media conglomerates grow fatter on a daily basis, sucking up smaller rivals and spitting out a growing array of business-friendly pabulum. Like Darth Vader turning the keys on the Death Star, megacorporations rev up the World Trade Organization, determined to extend Social Darwinist-style capitalism around the globe. From a progressive point of view, politics these days are no laughing matter. Unless, that is, you're a lefty from the Lone Star State. In a strange geographic irony, the conservative state of Texas, home of red-meat-Republican Sen. Phil Gramm and the deadliest death row in the union, offers a parade of political activists and writers (like, say, Molly Ivins) with a virtue progressives are often accused of lackinga good sense of humor. Why Texas? It makes perfect sense to author, columnist, and political commentator Jim Hightower, the state's former agricultural commissioner and current lefty-at-large who matches Ivins in his populist politics and his unshakable sense of humor.

Justice for Sale Interview with Jim Hightower
Jim Howtower is a political commentator who has spent 25 years battling Washington and Wall Street on behalf of working families, consumers, environmentalists, and small businesses. He served two terms as Texas elected agriculture commissioner. He also publishes a biweekly political newsletter, "The Hightower Lowdown." His web address is www.jimhightower.com. Q: I've done stories on campaign finance and you've been beating this reform drum for a long time. What's a little different for me on this story is that we're now talking about judges who run and have to go to the same well to draw this money. Any thoughts on that subject? JH: Well it's just the same old corruption in a different venue. We pay most attention to Congress or to the White House but it's just as rampant in state government and now into the judiciary as well. After all so much of our law actually is being made by judges these days and not in the old sense of when Ronald Reagan was pounding the podium and saying we've got to stop this liberal judges in America, making law. Well now we've got right wing judges corporatists making laws and that's running roughshod over the average person in America. Q: Tell me a little bit about the Texas Supreme Court. We have heard the story that some time ago, trial lawyers and democrats were in sway. If you look at the court now, it's a very different court.

A rich man died and tried to get into heaven. As you know, though, one doesn't just waltz through the Pearly Gates, no matter who you are. No, noyou must present yourself to the Angel standing outside, and that Angel reviews your life while St. Peter listens, then St. Peter renders judgment on whether you get to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
So the Angel looked over this rich man's life, shook his head, and said: "Why, you never did no good for nobody no way; why are you even standing here?"
"Now wait a minute," the rich man said, "I have given to charity. Why, in 1933 I came across a poor widow who needed food and I gave her a nickel."
"So?" the Angel asked.
"Well, then there was that time in 1943, I saw a beggar man on the street, and I put a nickel in his cup."
"Maybe so," the Angel said, "but that doesn't make up for a lifetime of greed."

Going Down the Road The Water Profiteers by Jim Hightower 2 September 2002 The Nation
Where's the Department of Homeland Security when we really need it? I suppose that Homeland czar Tom Ridge is too busy with his color codes and his TIPS snitch patrols to notice or care that dozens of American communities presently find themselves under assault by foreign powers with names like RWE Suez Vivendi and Perrier . These global corporate raiders are grabbing for our most essential public resource: water. In just the past few years, such transnational conglomerates (along with such US players as Bechtel, T. Boone Pickens, Monsanto and, until recently, Enron) have quietly privatized all or part of the water delivery systems in Atlanta, Berlin, Bolivia, Buenos Aires, Casablanca, Chattanooga, Houston, Jacksonville, Jersey City, Lexington, Ky., Peoria, San Francisco and many other places (some of which have reverted to public ownership), plus laid claim to whole bodies of water, including the Midwestern Ogallala Aquifer, Blue Lake in Alaska and Canada's huge James Bay. The water profiteers are seizing control by using weaselly politicians, campaign contributions, outright bribery, hordes of lobbyists, multimillion-dollar propaganda campaigns, NAFTA, the WTO, the IMF and the World Bank. An example of their reach can be found in the Water Investment Act moving through Congress, a generally worthy bill to provide funds for local cities to upgrade or expand their water systems. But industry lobbyists have tucked two little bombs into it, which remain in the House version: (1) a city cannot get federal financing unless it "has considered" privatizing its water system; and (2) private water corporations could get public subsidies for their water schemes.
