Always they uphold the traditions of common life and of art and the integrity of the person against the tyranny of ideologya tyranny that, as a twentieth-century Pole, Herbert knew very well.

Add to a Notebook Zbigniew Herbert Zbigniew Herbert was born on October 29, 1924, in Lvov (then in eastern Poland, it is now a part of the Ukraine). His grandfather was an Englishman who came to Lvov to teach English. His father, a former member of the Legions that had fought for restoration of Poland's independence, was a bank manager. Herbert's formal education began in Lvov and continued under German occupation in the form of clandestine study at the underground King John Casimir University, where he majored in Polish literature. He was a member of the underground resistance movement. In 1944, he moved to Krakow, and three years later he graduated from the University of Krakow with a master's degree in economics. He also received a law degree from Nicholas Copernicus University in Torun and studied philosophy at the University of Warsaw under Henryk Elzenberg. During the 1950s he worked at many low-paying jobs because he refused to write within the framework of official Communist guidelines. After widespread riots against Soviet control in 1956 brought about a political "thaw," Herbert became an administrator at the Union of Polish Composers and published his first collection, The Chord of Light ("Struna swiatla," 1956). The book put him immediately among the most prominent representatives of the "Contemporaries" (young poets and writers associated with the weekly

Ein Orakelspruch verhieß demjenigen die Herrschaft über Asien, dem es gelänge, diesen Knoten zu lösen. An dieser Aufgabe versuchte sich auch Alexander der Große auf seinem Zug gegen Persien (334-333 vor Christus). Als er feststellen musste, dass es ihm unmöglich war, das kunstvoll verschlungene Gebilde aufzudröseln, durchschlug er den Knoten mit einem kraftvollen Schwerthieb: Dieser Umgang mit dem Gordischen Knoten gilt seither als Muster für eine rasche, entschiedene und unkonventionelle Lösung eines hoch komplizierten Problems. Was der - immerhin von Aristoteles persönlich erzogene - Heerführer und Staatenlenker freilich übersah, war die Tatsache, "dass das Lösen von Knoten und Problemen keine athletische Leistung ist, sondern eine geistige Unternehmung, und dies setzt eine Bereitschaft zum Irren und zur Ratlosigkeit, die wunderbar menschliche Unsicherheit und demütige Geduld angesichts der verworrenen Materie der Welt voraus". Dieser Ansicht war jedenfalls der vor drei Jahren verstorbene polnische Lyriker und Essayist Zbigniew Herbert, wie aus einem in seinem Nachlass gefundenen kleinen Prosastück hervorgeht.

Der Krieg ist noch nicht aus: "der schurke Parkinson hat so lange gewartet / bis er uns erwischte als wir lässig vor uns hintrotteten / die kragen aufgeknöpft die hände in den taschen / in gedanken im urlaub ... ", und nun gibt es nur noch "ein gemeinsames ziel: überleben". So spricht ein alter Mann, der das Ende ahnt, zu einem Freund und zu sich selbst. Der polnische Dichter Zbignew Herbert (1924-1998) hat in seinem Werk für das lyrische Ich oft den Decknamen "Herr Cogito" verwendet, auch sein bekanntestes Buch trägt ihn als Titel. Kurz vor seinem Tod hat Herbert diesen Herrn Cogito ein letztes Mal auftreten lassen, in der Gedichtsammlung "Gewitter Epilog". Auch in seinem Abschiedsbuch besichtigt der Autor sein Zeitalter, das politische sowie das private, etwa in dem Gedicht "Das Hohe Schloss", anlässlich einer Reise in "die verstummte stadt Lemberg", in der er geboren ist, die nun zur Ukraine gehört.
