His father worked as agardener shopkeeper and cricketer his mother as a maid and houskeeper. His carrer as an author was fostered by an unfortunate accident as a child. He broke his leg and spent the mandatory rest period reading every book which he could find. Wells was awarded a scholarchip and furthered his education at the Normal School of science. It was the Normal School that Wells came under the wing of the famous biologist Thomas H. Huxley. Wells‘ „science fiction“ was clearly influenced by his studies at the Normal School and his interest in biology. He worked in poverty in London at a crammer while experimenting in journalism and stories, and published textbooks on biology and physiography. H.G. Wells gained fame with his first major fiction work: The Time Machine in 1895. Soon after the publication of this book, Wells followed with The Island of Dr. Moreau (1895), The Invisible Man, and perhaps his most popular work: The War of the Worlds published in 1898. Over the years Wells became concerbed with the fate of human society in a world where technology and scientific study were advancing at a rapid pace. For a period he was a member of The Fabian Society, a group of social philosophers in London. Well’s later works became less science fiction and more social critic. He envisioned a utopia in which the vast and frightening material forces available to modern men and woman would be rationally controlled for progress and for the equal good of all. His later works were increasingly pessimistic. He had dobts about the ability of humankind to survive. Especially  the Second World War and the cataclysm of Hiroshima confirmed the pessimism (which had throughout accompanied his exuberant hopes and visions.)

Born: September 21, 1866, in Bromley, Kent, England
Died: August 13, 1946, in London, England
H.G. Wells was an English author and political philosopher. His novels are based in science- fiction and most make projections about the future of humankind. He was a prolific writer, producing over eighty books.
He studied biology at the University of London and worked as a draper's apprentice, bookkeeper, tutor, and journalist. In 1891, he married his cousin, Isabel Mary Wells. After they divorced, he married Amy Catherine Robbins and, together, they had two sons. Wells joined a Fabian socialist group in 1903. He ran as a Labour Party candidate in 1922, but wasn't elected to parliament until 1923. Just before his death, he published a work that explored personality, for which he was honored with a doctor of science degree from the University of London. He wrote novels that make comments about our civilization and warn of the dangers that may lie ahead. Some of his better known works include:

Wells' frühe Geschichten kreisten um Begegnungen zwischen Menschen und seltsamen Lebensformen, wie in »The Stolen Bacillus«, »In the Avu Observatory«, »The Flowering of the Strange Orchid« und »Aepyornis Island« (alle 1894). Herbert George Wells, more popularly known as simply H. G. Wells, is considered by some to be the father of modern science fiction. I personally do not know much about science fiction and the history thereof, but I would say that Wells was an extremely talented writer, as these selected extracts show. Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) Ebony Cumulus Cloud
(from The War of the Worlds
Everything had suddenly become very still. Far away to the southeast, marking the quiet, we heard the Martians hooting to one another, and then the air quivered again with the distant thud of their guns. But the earthly artillery made no reply. Now at the time we could not understand these things, but later I was to learn the meaning of these ominous kopjes that gathered in the twilight. Each of the Martians, standing in the great crescent I have described, had discharged ... a huge canister over whatever hill, copse, cluster of houses, or other possible cover for guns, chanced to be in front of him. ... These canisters smashed on striking the ground -they did not explode - and incontinently disengaged an enormous volume of heavy, inky vapour, coiling and pouring upward in a huge and ebony cumulus cloud, a gaseous hill that sank and spread itself slowly over the surrounding country. And the touch of that vapour, the inhaling of its pungent wisps, was death to all that breathes. Once the tumultuous upheaval of its dispersion was over, the black smoke clung so closely to the ground, even before its precipitation, that fifty feet up in the air, on the roofs and upper stories of high houses and on great trees, there was a chance of escaping its poison altogether, as was proved even that night at Street Cobham and Ditton.

The accuracy of the "science" in Wells's work has often been called into question. It is rumored that Wells and the French novelist Jules Verne actually criticized each other's writing. Wells's claim was that "Verne couldn't write himself out of a paper sack" and Verne accused Wells of having "scientifically implausible ideas." The science may not be accurate, but the adventure and philosophy in those books makes Wells' early science fiction fun and fascinating to read.

    Montgomery, Wales
, on April 3, 1593, the fifth son of Richard and Magdalen Newport Herbert. After his father's death in 1596, he and his six brothers and three sisters were raised by their mother, patron to John Donne who dedicated his Holy Sonnets to her. Herbert was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge . His first two sonnets, sent to his mother in 1610, maintained that the love of God is a worthier subject for verse than the love of woman. His first verses to be published, in 1612, were two memorial poems in Latin on the death of Prince Henry , the heir apparent.
    Cambridge
, and in 1620 he was elected public orator (to 1628). It was a post carrying dignity and even some authority: its incumbent was called on to express, in the florid Latin of the day, the sentiments of the university on public occasions. In 1624 and 1625 Herbert was elected to represent Montgomery in Parliament. In 1626, at the death of Sir Francis Bacon , (who had dedicated his Translation of Certaine Psalmes to Herbert the year before) he contributed a memorial poem in Latin. Herbert's mother died in 1627; her funeral sermon was delivered by Donne. In 1629, Herbert married his step-father's cousin Jane Danvers, while his brother
