Jessica Smith ENG 372: Theoretical Explorations in Innovative Poetics Professor Ming-Qian Ma 10 September 2001 Articulating Space: L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E Poetics and the Creation of Individual Meaning In a “postmodern,” post-Barthes society, the writer is constantly on the edge of extinction. Bound by language and thereby chained into contextual social constraints, the writer has little space to move and even less space to “create” in the classic sense. No longer a “man speaking to men” (Wordsworth) or an “unacknowledged legislator of the world” (Shelley), the poet must articulate a space for his or her work before his or her voice can be aligned with a sense of individual identity and heard as a “speck” (du Plessis 127) in the fabric of socio-political discourse. The issue of identity or “self” is the fundamental issue in the texts we have covered thus far in class (see Works Cited for a list of these texts). Without an “I,” “I” cannot speak, write, create, or even think. The subject is required to answer the question posed by Hejinian, “Am I speaking?” ( WS* The poets’ collective preoccupation with subjectivity is based on the problem of a speaking being.

Interview with Lyn Hejinian
Vicki Hudspith : In your letter to me last summer you said the new work you're doing feels "like war today." Does it still? Lyn Hejinian : Things are much better! (laughter) For a few months I couldn't get any work done at all. I got entangled in a lot of questions having to do with the difference between lines and sentences which determines whether the work is poetry or prose. That was an essentially formal problem but absolutely central to the work of writing itself. The other issue seems to be what one might call motivation for work. I dont mean my own I'm motivatedI mean the work's. Really, very very little of my work has ever been "motivated" or "occasional"occasionedthat is, written because of or about some occasion V.H. : Are you trying to pull content back into the work? "Gertrude Stein and Her Descendents"
    Instructor: Stephen Ratcliffe
    Course Description
In this course we will explore a selection of Stein's writing in context both of the development of the modernist (which is to say "experimental" and in Stein's case expatriot) tradition in American literature, and of the continuation of that tradition (which has been called "avant-garde," the "new American poetry," and, more recently, "language writing," each of these terms inadequate to describe the work it means to describe) in certain contemporary women writers, poets this course will call Stein's literary "descendents." We will think about Stein's work in itself what did she write? what was she doing? what did she think (and say) she was doing? and also about the question of its "influence" on later writers what has "X" learned from Stein? how has her work continued, reshaped, swerved away from Stein's? how might one writer absorb (or be absorbed by) the work of another. Each student will investigate the work of one or more contemporary writers in relation to Stein, and will present her findings orally

"Hejinian's essays are a keystone of postwar North American poetics. They are also a great pleasure to read, for Hejinian is an extraordinarily resonant stylist whose work combines the lushness of her poetry with an engaging aesthetic and philosophical inventiveness. This is writing that avoids closure in the pursuit of unfolding, multifaceted, restive thought. The Language of Inquiry's meditations on the possibilities of poetry create an experience in which each reader is at the center. To engage with this work is to be put in touch with oneself as if anew."Charles Bernstein, author of My Way: Speeches and Poems "From 1975, when she wrote 'A Thought Is the Bride of What Thinking' the first 'essay' in this collection Lyn Hejinian has always regarded poetry and poetics as intimately interwoven: her poetry has sometimes been highly theoretical even as her theoretical and critical peices are nothing if not poetic. Lyn Hejinian from The Fatalist Dog isn’t right, poetry isn’t wrong — words in themselves
can’t be right or wrong. If writing is to serve as their chief
interrogator it must ask the very questions
regarding puppets or cookies that we would ask
with a three year old dashing toward us
with confidence. We would have to be armed
with questions and the artistic courage
that is required to sustain them. Then things will surface
like the scraps of paper on which they are written and ambition
afloat on mineral water left over from the party – we all remember
the preparations before and the cleanup after the fire. Brown by day and red at night, the sky came within 500 yards of the conscripted convicts. We gave them everything they asked for when they approached the fire through miles of brush in prison garb and guarded by deputies thinking us naive to be grateful for something they’d been condemned to do. Things weren’t yet working but I knew how to fix the problem. It was structural as when I was in high school sitting in the town cemetery which lay pretty much midway between the sentimental verses on the gravestones and my fear of death. Figures distinct
