what he has set out to make Hecht was born in New York City in 1923. He entered Bard College as an undergraduate in 1940 (Bard was at the time an experimental adjunct of Columbia University) and was called up for military service in 1943. As a soldier he was sent to France, Germany, and the former Czechoslovakia, then redeployed to occupation duty in Japan, covering both hemispheres. A Summoning of Stones (1954) and The Hard Hours The Darkness and the Light The Hidden Law Aeschylus , and two edited anthologies) is matched by his reputation as a teacher, predominantly of literature. He has taught at Bard College, Smith College, University of Rochester, Washington University, Harvard, and Yale. From 1985 until he retired in 1993, he was University Professor at Georgetown. Hecht has also collaborated with visual artists. He has written poems to accompany the engravings of Thomas Bewick, Lynd Ward, and Leonard Baskin ( The Seven Deadly Sins Flight Among the Tombs ). Readers of The Darkness and the Light Hecht, who will turn eighty next year, has just completed a new collection of essays on poets and poetry, entitled

In these engaging lectures, the eminent poet Anthony Hecht explores the art of poetry in its own right and in relation to the other fine arts. While the problems he treats entail both philosophic and theoretical discussion, he never allows abstract speculation to overshadow his respect for and delight in the written texts that he introduces or in the specific examples of painting and music to which he refers. After discussing the links between literature (with special reference to poetry) and painting, and between literature and music, Hecht investigates the theme of paradise and wilderness, especially but not exclusively in The Tempest. He then turns to the question of public and private art: the ways in which all the arts participate in "equivocal and curious balances between private and public modes of discourse," between an exclusive or elitist role and the openly political. Beginning with a discussion of architecture as an illustration of a more general theme of discord and balance, the penultimate lecture probes the inner contradictions of works of art and our reactions to them. The sixth and final piece concerns art and morality, especially the issues involved in public funding of the arts.

(Today's NY Times has a very good profile on Anthony Hecht, one of the most respected poets in the USA who I studied under and got drunk with at Bard College in the early 1960s. The Times article mentions the trauma brought on by his experience in WWII, but the interview with him following the article throws into sharper relief his views on the "good war" so hyped now by people like Stephen Spielberg and Tom Hanks.)

Distilling the Music of Poetry
By DINITIA SMITH
WASHINGTON — Anthony Hecht, that epitome of Formalism in poetry, stands at the door. Mr. Hecht, who just turned 80, wears a jacket and tie in the middle of the day to receive a visitor. His posture is erect, his beard neatly trimmed.
For 50 years Mr. Hecht has been a bulwark against the invasion of contemporary poetry by the undisciplined, against the purveyors of free verse, the babblers of the spoken-word movement, the language poets with their brittle associations.
He is a classicist if there ever was one, for whom rhyme and metric schemes constitute poetry's essential music. This spring he will publish "Melodies Unheard: Essays on Poetry" (Johns Hopkins University Press), which defends the principles that he holds so dear. He cites Flaubert: "One must not always think that feeling is everything. Art is nothing without form."

Prospects
We have set out from here for the sublime
Pastures of summer shade and mountain stream;
I have no doubt we shall arrive on time.
Is all the green of that enamelled prime
A snapshot recollection or a dream?
We have set out from here for the sublime
Without provisions, without one thin dime,
And yet, for all our clumsiness, I deem
It certain that we shall arrive on time.
No guidebook tells you if you'll have to climb Or swim. However foolish we may seem, We have set out from here for the sublime And must get past the scene of an old crime Before we falter and run out of steam, Riddled by doubt that we'll arrive on time. Yet even in winter a pale paradigm Of birdsong utters its obsessive theme. We have set out from here for the sublime; I have no doubt we shall arrive on time. Anthony Hecht

"Anthony Hecht's vast knowledge of literature and his gift for mesmerizing argument are both amply present in Melodies Unheard . Whether defending the sestina against accusations of boredom and dolefulness or examining the structure of Shakespeare's sonnets or unraveling some of the complexity of Moby-Dick , these essays are models of civility, candor, and grace. I know of no other poet, certainly none of Anthony Hecht's stature, who sheds as much light on the intricacies and hidden designs of poems and who does it with such style." Mark Strand

A LETTER - Anthony Hecht
I have been wondering
What you are thinking about, and by now suppose
It is certainly not me.
But the crocus is up, and the lark, and the blundering
Blood knows what it knows.
It talks to itself all night, like a sliding moonlit sea.
Of course, it is talking of you.
At dawn, where the ocean has netted its catch of lights,
The sun plants one lithe foot
On that spill of mirrors, but the blood goes worming through Its warm Arabian nights, Naming your pounding name again in the dark heart-root. Who shall, of course, be nameless. Anyway, I should want you to know I have done my best, As I'm sure you have, too. Others are bound to us, the gentle and blameless Whose names are not confessed In the ceaseless palaver. My dearest, the clear unquaried blue Of those depths is all but blinding.
