So Big by Edna Ferber Nathaniel Hawthorne
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts. The Puritan overtones of his novel Scarlet Letter are no accident, as Hawthorne was descended from Puritan ancestors. When Nathaniel’s father, a ship captain, died on a voyage, Nathaniel’s mother moved the family to Maine where her brothers lived. Hawthorne attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where he was a classmate of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. After graduation, Hawthorne returned to Salem with hopes of becoming a writer. His first writing attempts were short stories. Although these stories met with some popularity, they were not financially successful. Hawthorne took a job in a customs house to pay his living expenses. A collection of Hawthorne’s short stories was published in 1837 under the name of Twice-told Tales. This was followed by Mosses from an Old Manse. But it was not until 1850 that Hawthorne gained recognition as a noteworthy author and a master of allegorical tales. With The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne’s genius for symbolism and his Puritan heritage proved to be a winning combination. While The Scarlet Letter received tremendous acceptance, Hawthorne feared that it was a bit dismal and vowed to write a happier novel for his next work. In 1851, Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables was published. Gable’s plot celebrated the power of love over a family curse. The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables were Hawthorne’s most famous works.

The Celestial Railroad N Our coach rattled out of the city, and, at a short distance from its outskirts, passed over a bridge, of elegant construction, but somewhat too slight, as I imagined, to sustain any considerable weight. On both sides lay an extensive quagmire, which could not have been more disagreeable either to sight or smell, had all the kennels of the earth emptied their pollution there. "This," remarked Mr. Smooth-it-away, "is the famous Slough of Desponda disgrace to all the neighborhood; and the greater, that it might so easily be converted into firm ground." "I have understood," said I, "that efforts have been made for that purpose, from time immemorial. Bunyan mentions that above twenty thousand cart-loads of wholesome instructions had been thrown in here, without effect." "Very probably!and what effect could be anticipated from such unsubstantial stuff?" cried Mr. Smooth-it-away. "You observe this convenient bridge. We obtained a sufficient foundation for it by throwing into the Slough some editions of books of morality, volumes of French philosophy and German rationalism, tracts, sermons, and essays of modern clergymen, extracts from Plato, Confucius, and various Hindoo sages, together with a few ingenious com- mentaries upon texts of Scriptureall of which, by some scientific process, have been converted into a mass like granite. The whole bog might be filled up with similar matter."

The Romantic Period, 1820-1860: Fiction: Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864)
Index Nathaniel Hawthorne, a fifth-generation American of English descent, was born in Salem, Massachusetts, a wealthy seaport north of Boston that specialized in East India trade. One of his ancestors had been a judge in an earlier century, during trials in Salem of women accused of being witches. Hawthorne used the idea of a curse on the family of an evil judge in his novel The House of the Seven Gables Many of Hawthorne's stories are set in Puritan New England, and his greatest novel, The Scarlet Letter (1850), has become the classic portrayal of Puritan America. It tells of the passionate, forbidden love affair linking a sensitive, religious young man, the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, and the sensuous, beautiful townsperson, Hester Prynne. Set in Boston around 1650 during early Puritan colonization, the novel highlights the Calvinistic obsession with morality, sexual repression, guilt and confession, and spiritual salvation. For its time

    A note on the text
The authoritative text of The Life of Franklin Pierce is the edition published by the Ohio State University Press as part of the Centenary Edition of the Works of Nathaniel Hawthorne, approved for teaching purposes by the Modern Language Association. That text does not include Pierce's war diary, which was edited but not written by Hawthorne. We have reproduced the text here without regard to the original layout or pagination. Em dashes are rendered as "" (two hyphens or minus signs) without spaces on either side. The text is not justified to the right margin as in the original. Words orginally hyphenated at the ends of lines have been divided by hyphens or not, according to our best suppositions. Spelling, capitalization, and punctuation have not been modernized. In particular, what we would now call "Democratic Party" has not been capitalized. The original text is typographically undistinguished, with only a few words emphasized. Italic headings for Pierce's Mexican journal entries are rendered with the <em> tag, which shows as italic in many browsers.
