ROBERT HASS
ROBERT HASS is a professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley and served as Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry at the Library of Congress from 1995 to 1997. During his tenure as Poet Laureate, Professor Hass battled illiteracy by putting into action his belief that, " Imagination makes communities." Of his passion for promoting iteracy, he explains that, "when I got the (Laureate) job I did a lot of reading about literacy...One of the things that struck me was just how powerful a presence poetry has been in our culture when we were, as a people, teaching ourselves to read. At the beginning of the 19th century, less than 60% of American males could write their name, and that was far higher than in most of Europe. If you were black, you could get killed for reading. But we made literacy a civic religion from the idea that you couldn’t have a democracy without it, and we taught a whole people to read. It’s one of the great achievements of the American democratic experiment and one of the indicators of the hunger for literacy, was a taste for poetry." As Poet Laureate, he also sponsored a weeklong celebration of American nature writing called "Watershed." His commitment to environmental issues led him to found the River of Words poetry contest which is run through the International Rivers Network.

The Poets Laureate Special Edition #4:

Robert Hass’s Happiness
Robert Hass was born in San Francisco in 1941. His books of poetry include Sun Under Wood: New Poems (Ecco Press, 1996); Human Wishes Praise (1979), and Field Guide (1973), which was selected by Stanley Kunitz for the Yale Younger Poets Series. He has also co-translated several volumes of poetry with Czeslaw Milosz, most recently Facing the River (1995), and is author or editor of several other collections of essays and translation, including The Essential Haiku: Versions of Basho, Buson, and Issa (1994), and Twentieth Century Pleasures: Prose on Poetry (1984). He served as Poet Laureate of the United States from 1995 to 1997 and is currently a Chancellor of The Academy of American Poets. He lives in California and teaches at the University of California, Berkeley. RH is also 1 of those Western Intellectuals infatuated with the notion ‘West is bad, East is good.’ He has supplemented his own growing corpus of poetastry with an equally soporific translation portfolio. Don’t you just love a dullard who insists on draining your patience bilingually? Let’s check out the titular poem: Happiness Because yesterday morning from the steamy window
we saw a pair of red foxes across the creek
eating the last windfall apples in the rain—
they looked up at us with their green eyes
long enough to symbolize the wakefulness of living things
and then went back to eating— and because this morning
when she went into the gazebo with her black pen and yellow pad

69. Poet Laureate Robert Hass To Read Works At Centre
Poet Laureate robert hass to read works at Centre No practicing poet hasmore talent than robert hass, proclaims The Atlantic Monthly.
http://www.centre.edu/web/news/roberthass.html
Poet Laureate Robert Hass to read works at Centre RELEASED: April 19, 2001 DANVILLE, KY-Robert Hass, poet laureate of the United States from 1995 through 1997, will give a poetry reading on April 23 at 8 p.m. in Weisiger Theatre on the Centre College Campus. The free public reading will be followed by a book signing.
The only duty required of the nation's poet laureate is to present one reading and one lecture per year at the Library of Congress. As poet laureate, Hass broadened that role and became a champion for literacy and environmental issues. He crisscrossed the United States speaking at Rotary Club meetings and other organizations to raise money to hold conferences such as Watershed , a gathering of writers and environmentalists who teach inner-city kids about the nation's long tradition of nature writing. As a result of Hass's commitment to such ideals, he was selected as "Educator of the Year" by the North American Association on Environmental Education in 1997.
"No practicing poet has more talent than Robert Hass," proclaims The Atlantic Monthly . Hass explores nature, solitude and the bonds of children, parents and lovers in his poetry. Believing that natural beauty must be tended to and that caring for a place means knowing it intimately, Hass feels that poets especially need to pay constant attention to the interaction of mind and environment.

Die Veranstaltung mit dem Titel: "An Unnamed Flowing: The Idea of a Tradition in American Poetry - A Personal Survey" steht allen Interessierten offen.
