  • introduction to Robert Hass
  • I used "introtrac" and searched under "Haas, Robert" (note: Haas ) and came up with a whole series of entries referring to the writings of Robert Hass, the poet laureate, including a prose poem called "early April" from TriQuarterly , Winter 1995 n95 p46(3), which begins thus:
      This morning a cat - bright orange - pawing at the one patch of new grass in the sand-and tanbark-colored leaves. And last night the sapphire of the raccoon's eyes in the beam of the flashlight. He was climbing a tree beside the house, trying to get onto the porch, I think, for a wad of oatmeal Simmered in cider from the bottom of the pan we'd left out for the birds. And earlier a burnished, somewhat dazed woodchuck, his coat gleaming with spring, Loping toward his burrow in the roots of a tree among the drying winter's litter Of old leaves on the floor of the woods, when I went out to get the New York Times. And male cardinals were whistling back and forth - sireeep, sreeep, sreeep - Sets of three sweet full notes, weaving into and out of each other like the triplet rhymes in medieval poetry, And the higher, purer notes of the tufted titmice among them, High in the trees where they were catching what they could of the early sun.

An Unnamed Flowing: The Idea of a Tradition in American Poetry (A Personal Survey)
A survey from the point of view of an interested party, that is, a working poet, of the history of American poetry looking at what is characteristic in it and at what is still alive and usable: The course will look at Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, at several of the modernist poets, especially T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, Wallace Stevens, Gertrude Stein, and Hilda Dolittle, or H.D., at the origin and development of African-American poetry, at the California tradition in American poetry, especially Robinson Jeffers and Kenneth Rexroth, at the Beat Generation and post World War II experimental writing and its intensely personal and autobiographical subjects, and at the various American postmodernisms of the 80's and 90's. It will end with a consideration of the relation between postmodern aesthetics and environmental politics at the turn of the new century.

    An Afternoon with Robert Hass
    Photo by Barbara Hall Free Public Lecture by the Former U.S. Poet Laureate Thursday, February 19, 1998 Noon, Michigan Theater Reception at Shaman Drum Bookshop Following Lecture Co-sponsored by Great Lakes Literary Alliance, CHRIS TRIOLA, Shaman Drum Bookshop Robert Hass has changed what it means to be Poet Laureate of the United States (96/97). He's made the Office of Poetry and Literature a position from which to launch action. Armed with the mantra, "Imagination makes communities," Hass has spent two years battling American illiteracy. He's crisscrossed the country speaking at Rotary Club meetings, raising money to hold conferences like Watershed, a gathering of writers and environmentalists who teach inner-city kids about the nation's long tradition of nature writing. For Hass, everything is connected. When he works to heighten literacy, he's also working to promote awareness about the environment. Hass believes that natural beauty must be tended to and that caring for a place means knowing it intimately. Poets, especially, need to pay constant attention to the interaction of mind and environment. And when he's talking about poetry itself, whether

    Robert Hass claims he was merrily going about his job of writing poetry when he was tapped by the Librarian of Congress to become the new United States Poet Laureate. He asked what the position entailed and was told "not much." What an understatement that turned out to be! Hass stayed almost continually on the road during his two-year term, not only fulfilling his official mandate "to raise national awareness of the importance of poetry," but also to speak out for all his connected issues. Poetry is a path to literacy which branches off into care of the environment, community ties, bold imagination, cures for poverty, and a host of other values Hass deems important. But each Poet Laureate has indeed been left to define and to defend his/her own role. The post was created in 1985 by an act of Congress, following a stormy history of the less prestigious title of Consultant in Poetry. Such poets as Robert Frost, Carl Sandburg, and Stephen Vincent Benet graced the previous post, but some declined the dubious honor. Even Frost hesitantly accepted in 1958 with the condition he make only four visits to the Library. There were controversies such as that surrounding the attempt by the Fellows of the Library of Congress to offer Ezra Pound a poetry prize after he had been accused of treason.

    This Week's Stories: Regular Features Robert Hass Reads Poetry at the White House by Julia Sommer, Public Affairs
    posted June 10, 1998 Robert Hass, professor of English and former U.S. poet laureate (1995-97), recently spent an evening reading poetry to President and Mrs. Clinton and their guests in the East Room of the White House. All three poets read works by Emily Dickinson. Hass selected the Dickinson poem:
      Much madness is divinist sense
      To a discerning eye;
      Much sense the starkest madness.
      In this, as all, prevails.
      Assent, and you are sane;
      And handled with a chain.
    The millennial evening included poetry readings by both the President and First Lady, poetry recitations by attending guests, and questions about poets and poetry from around the nation via the Internet.

The program, which features a display of artworks by their creators and poetry readings by the winning authors, will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the Mumford Room on the sixth floor of the James Madison Memorial Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E. It is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. Mr. Hass cofounded "River of Words" with Pamela Michael, who serves as project director. The International Rivers Network and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress are the cosponsors. The contest, which focuses on the theme of "watersheds," is open to young artists and poets from 5 to 19 years of age. The 1999 winners, chosen from thousands of entries, were announced by Mr. Hass on April 18 at the San Francisco Public Library. During the ceremony, he remarked, "It's thrilling to see, year after year, these young artists and writers giving us back the places where we live through their words and images. Through their explorations and reflection on their home grounds, we are all made more aware of the beauty, history and fragility of our natural landscapes."

    Intimate Art Robert Hass celebrates the quiet joys of poetry By David Templeton POETRY . . . is . . . an . . . intimate art." Robert Hass speaks softly and slowly this afternoon, choosing each word as carefully as if he were selecting an expensive bottle of wine. Or a diamond. Or a new puppy. He's answering a question about the intense passion poetry fans often reveal when talking about the art form. "Poetry's basic material," Hass says, "is the voice in which we talk to ourselves in our heads. Against all the noise and fury and pressures and deadening routines of external reality, poetry functions as that still, small voice of what it would feel like, were it not buried under the circumstances of our lives, to be our true and authentic selves." Stop. Read that quote again. If you can do so without being thrown out of the coffee-house, try reading it out loud. There now. You have to agree that poetseven when engaged in routine conversation, even when giving yet another interviewdo have a way of making their words sing.

Usner Way With Words: Billy Collins (left) and Robert Hass are tireless supporters of the public's right to read (and write) lines of verse. Poetic License Being Poet Laureate is not all cheese cubes and wine in plastic cups By Sara Bir It's even harder to gain national stardom as a poet than it is as a novelist, and that's saying something. Consider for a moment how many poets there are in the North Bay. Now consider how many of them will ever perform to sold-out crowds at $15 a ticket or more. That's the reality of modern poetry. Still, some time in the past few years, Americans began to embrace poetry with a newfound enthusiasm, eagerness, and even need. There's no one reason. You could chalk it up to soul-searching spurred by 9-11 (though the interest in poetry started before the tragedy); a proliferation of increasingly accessible poets; or the cresting of some kind of populist-poetry culture cycle. Two of the many reasons, however, are easy to pinpoint: Billy Collins and Robert Hass, current Poet Laureate of the United States and former Poet Laureate of the United States respectively. Both appear at the Luther Burbank Center on Nov. 1, as part of the Copperfield's Books Reader's Series. The poets will also be announcing the winning poet from the submissions to Copperfield's literary magazine
