Hass, Robert A Story about the Body
Genre Poem Keywords Body Self-Image Cancer Communication Empathy ... Women's Health Summary This short prose poem (a single paragraph) concisely tells a powerful story. A composer at an artist's colony believes he has fallen in love with a woman of almost sixty, a Japanese painter. One night, late, at her door, she acknowledges their mutual desire, but warns him that she has had a double mastectomy. He leaves her, apologizing. In the morning he finds that she has left a bowl on his doorstep, filled with dead bees covered by a layer of rose petals. Commentary In the painter's eloquent gift, Hass captures the complexity of the relationship between sexuality and illness, especially when body image is so profoundly affected as it is by mastectomy. The image of petals and bees is an ambiguous one, leading the reader (or class, and it can work extremely well in class discussion) to work out the message it carries. The man's selfish reaction to the woman's body can be reflected in the ominous mass of dead insects only thinly concealed by his superficial sexual attraction, but it seems more likely that the gift is a forgiving one, and a kind of lesson about "the body," as the title suggests.

Robert Hass I Cannot Name It/ On Robert Hass
by Stanton Swihart
I knew I wanted to say something about Robert Hass. Something that says how much his poetry makes me feel, makes me want to feel, to always keep searching for ways to encounter life, the world. I sit wondering what to say that can impart how powerfully his words have affected me. Nothing comes to me. I want to say that I am amazed at the power of his words, which are strong fists that squeeze you into seeing. There are so many things to see. Hass wants to see them all, too, I think. There is a breathless excitement in seeing at the beginning of "Letter": I had wanted to begin by telling you I saw another tanager below the pond where I sat for half an hour feeding on wild berries in the little clearing near the pines that hide the lower field and then looked up from red berries to the quick red bird brilliant in the light. I have seen (1-10) Hass seems so excited about seeing that he does not bother to pause until ten lines into the poem. And the sense of sight occurs no less than three times in these opening lines. This is not only seeing, itself, but seeing that needs to be shared: "I wanted to begin/by telling you I saw…" (1-2). Who is he telling? Well, Hass is directing his vision to the one he loves, we come to find out as the poem goes along: "It’s you I love" (32). But I would also like to think that he is directing it to all of us who want to see, too. And how can we see what Hass sees? Well, through words, "the names of things" (43).

Our poet laureate began his term facing an unruly Congress and a growing national literacy problem. As his tenure ends, he's thinking about the "small, local ways we keep ourselves alive." by Sarah Pollock I n accepting the post of poet laureate of the United States two years ago, Robert Hass postponed his writing life for what he has called an "act of citizenship." Since his appointment, he has written a weekly column on poetry syndicated by the Washington Post and has traveled around the country to urge more funding for literacy and education, and to suggest the need for deeper awareness of environmental relationships. Hass' tenure as poet laureate has been a more public expression of the lifelong concerns that inform his poetry: a close attention to the natural world, a sense of self developed in relation to the landscape, an acute awareness of both the pleasures and pains of being human. His books of poetry include Human Wishes Praise , and Field Guide . In his latest collection

http://www.motherjones.com/mother_jones/MA97/visions_jump.html
Robert Hass (cont'd)
Q: How are they connected? A: They are the kinds of things that make us a community: attachment to place, attachment to local arts traditions, the ability to read literature, the ability to look at paintings, the sense of connectedness to the land, the sense of community that comes from people taking care of their own. The market doesn't make communities. Markets make networks of self-interested individuals, and they work as long as there's more than enough to go around. As poet laureate, I was asked to be a spokesman for literature. Then what I decided is I am a spokesman for this other imagination of community not the one showing up in the market. Nobody was tending to the way we're imaginatively connected to each other. Q: How did that lead to your work on literacy? A: I got interested in the question of literacy because writers are always moaning about why more people don't read books. They long for the good old days when people read serious novels. Everybody has a different idea of when those good old days were, but everyone is convinced that there was a time when literature really mattered and that it doesn't now. They also tend to believe that it really matters someplace else in very improbable places often. Russia is someone's idea of a place where literature really counts. As I started reading about it, I saw that at the beginning of the 19th century, outside of New England which was an unusually literate place practically no one could read or write. And even in New England, the overall rate was only about 60 percent. That still means four out of 10 people couldn't put their name to a will.
