Thomas Hardy
Writer England Born 2 Jun 1840
Died 11 Jan 1928
Thomas Hardy was born in a cottage in Higher Bockhampton, near Dorchester. He was educated locally and at 16 was articled to a Dorchester architect, John Hicks. In 1862 he moved to London and found employment with another architect, Arthur Blomfield. He now began to write poetry and published an essay. By 1867 he had returned to Dorset to work as Hicks's assistant and began his first (unpublished) novel, 'The Poor Man and the Lady'.
On an architectural visit to St Juliot in Cornwall in 1870 he met his first wife, Emma Gifford. Before their marriage in 1874 he had published four novels and was earning his living as a writer. More novels followed and in 1878 the Hardys moved from Dorset to the London literary scene. But in 1885, after building his house at Max Gate near Dorchester, Hardy again returned to Dorset. He then produced most of his major novels: 'The Mayor of Casterbridge' (1886), 'The Woodlanders' (1887), 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles' (1891), 'The Pursuit of the Well-Beloved' (1892) and 'Jude the Obscure' (1895). Amidst the controversy caused by 'Jude the Obscure', he turned to the poetry he had been writing all his life. In the next 30 years he published over 900 poems and his epic drama in verse, 'The Dynasts'.
After a long and bitter estrangement, Emma Hardy died at Max Gate in 1912. Paradoxically, the event triggered some of Hardy's finest love poetry. In 1914, however, he married Florence Dugdale, a close friend for several years. In 1910 he had been awarded the Order of Merit and was recognised, even revered, as the major literary figure of the time. His ashes were buried in Westminster Abbey and his heart at Stinsford in Dorset.

... Thomas Hardy An Imaginative Woman by Thomas Hardy
When William Marchmill had finished his inquiries for lodgings at a well-known watering-place in Upper Wessex, he returned to the hotel to find his wife. She, with the children, had rambled along the shore, and Marchmill followed in the direction indicated by the military-looking hall-porter 'By Jove, how far you've gone! I am quite out of breath,' Marchmill said, rather impatiently, when he came up with his wife, who was reading as she walked, the three children being considerably further ahead with the nurse. Mrs. Marchmill started out of the reverie into which the book had thrown her. 'Yes,' she said, 'you've been such a long time. I was tired of staying in that dreary hotel. But I am sorry if you have wanted me, Will?' 'Well, I have had trouble to suit myself. When you see the airy and comfortable rooms heard of, you find they are stuffy and uncomfortable. Will you come and see if what I've fixed on will do? There is not much room, I am afraid; hut I can light on nothing better. The town is rather full.' The pair left the children and nurse to continue their ramble, and went back together.

    Thomas Hardy
Thomas Hardy was born at Higher Bockhampton, Dorset, on June 2, 1840, where his father worked as a master mason and builder. From his father he gained an appreciation of music, and from his mother an appetite for learning and the delights of the countryside about his rural home. Hardy was frail as a child, and did not start at the village school until he was eight years old. One year later he transferred to a new school in the county town of Dorchester.
    The Dorset countryside
near Cheddington At the age of 16 Hardy helped his father with the architectural drawings for a restoration of Woodsford Castle. The owner, architect James Hicks, was impressed by the younger Hardy's work, and took him on as an apprentice.

THE COUNTRY OF WESSEX which includes Dorset is familiar to all Hardy fans. Far From the Madding Crowd, now has a sequel called Weatherbury Farm . Written as homage to Hardy, by a devoted fan, Patricia Dolling-Mann , the book is published by Xlibris. The country of the novel is Puddletown and its environs as in FFMC. In Far From the Madding Crowd, which is perhaps Thomas Hardy’s most popular novel, we leave Gabriel Oak and Bathsheba Everdene newly-married. Now, many years on, Bathsheba’s husband and three almost grown-up children have superseded the three diverse suitors of her youth. Bathsheba’s caprice and wilfulness has been replaced with the trials and tribulations of family life. All three children reject the careers chosen for them by their parents to become evermore cosmopolitan in their lives and outlook.
