S amuel Dashiell Hammett was born 27 May 1894 in Maryland. With his father too ill to work, 'Dash' left school at the age of 14 and held a wide range of jobs – messenger, clerk, timekeeper, machine operator, stevedore – until joining the Pinkerton Detective Agency in 1915. He resigned in 1918 to enlist in the U.S. Army, where he contracted influenza and then tuberculosis, from which he suffered for the rest of his life. H e returned to Pinkerton's in 1920. His health went thru cycles of good and bad, and he entered local hospitals more than once. During one such stay, at the Veteran's Hospital in Spokane, Washington, he met nurse Josephine Anna 'Jose' Dolan. They moved to San Francisco and were married 7 July 1921; his daughter Mary Jane was born in October. T E ditors rejected many of Dash's stories before H.L. Mencken accepted "The Parthian Shot" for the October 1922 issue of Smart Set Magazine . Dash's first sale to Black Mask Magazine was "The Road Home", published under the byline 'Peter Collison' in the December 1922 issue. The first appearance of the nameless 'Continental Op' character – modeled after his trainer/mentor at Pinkerton's, James Wright – was in "Arson Plus" in the October 1923 issue of

D ashiell Hammett was born on the eastern shore of Maryland in 1894. The second of three children, he dropped out of school at the age of thirteen. He worked a succession of low-paying jobs including freight clerk, railroad laborer, messenger boy, and stevedore. In 1915 he began working on and off as a detective for the Pinkerton Agency. In less than ten years he would be turning these experiences into some of the most popular detective stories of his time. Unlike the intellectualized mysteries of earlier detective novels, Hammett's less-than-glamorous realism transformed the genre into a serious response to the urban culture of the times. Hammett spent his early twenties working as a detective in San Francisco. Enlisting in the army during World War I, he became a sergeant in the Motor Ambulance Corp, where he contracted tuberculosis. Upon returning from the service, he realized that his ailing health made it impossible to continue as a detective. Quitting the agency, he tried his hand at writing. His first story was published in 1922 by the upscale society magazine THE SMART SET. His new gritty style of detective story, however, was better suited to the pulp crime magazines of the time. In 1923, one of the most popular, BLACK MASK, published his story "Arson Plus." Spade's parable of Flitcraft.

Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Lillian Hellman (1905-1984) American playwright and memoirist, who had a lifelong relationship with the mystery writer Dashiell Hammett . Hellman was active on political left. Many of the characters in her works were based on her own family members. Despite writing only 12 plays, Hellman was a leading voice in American theatre. "There are people who eat earth and eat all the people on it like in the Bible with the locusts. And other people who stand around and watch them eat." (from The Little Foxes Lillian Hellman was born in New Orleans to Julia (Newhouse) Hellman, who came from Alabama, and Max B. Hellman, from New Orleans. She moved with her family to New York at the age of five, and spent in her childhood half of every year in New York City and the otherhalf back in Louisiana at a boarding house run by her aunts. Hellman studied at New York University (1922-24) and Columbia University (1924) without completing a degree. She began her writing career by reviewing books for the New York Herald Tribune (1925-1928) and published short stories in the magazine The Paris Comet . From 1930 she read scripts for MGM in Hollywood. Her marriage (1925-32) with the playwright and press agent Arthur Kober ended in divorce, and she returned to New York. By that time she had already started an intimate friendship with Hammett, that would continue until his death 1961. Hellman was the inspiration for Hammett Nora Charles, the loyal wife of the detective hero Nick Charles. In real life, Hellman had several affairs during the decades she was close with Hammett, among others with John Melby, whom se met in Moscow in the 1940s.

    LILLIAN HELLMAN BIOGRAPHY

We have noticed a steady stream of visitors to this site looking for information on Lillian Hellman. Naturally our main interest is in Hammett but we now include a brief essay here. Hammett fans looking for further details of her relationship with him should be advised that the few details Hellman wrote about the thriller writer have been mostly collected from her autobiographies and serve as the introduction to The Big Knockover And Other Stories. Hellman is somewhat out of fashion these days. A brief survey of new and used bookshops in our home town turned up a single (tatty) second hand copy of Pentimento - a tie in with Fred Zinnemann's 1977 screen adaptation Julia . Inside the front cover someone had scribbled that 'the film sucks because of what they left out - see page 139'. A quick flick to the appropriate page showed the word 'communist' underscored several times. And this reveals the real reason for her unfashionable status. Hellman was a heavyweight dramatist who wrote about serious issues and at a time when the musical has monopolised much theatre space such work struggles to find an audience. Interest in Hellman's life, however is quite considerable, as she led a life as full and as varied as Hammett's. Lillian Florence Hellman was born on June 20th, 1905 in New Orleans and although moving to New York at the age of five, she frequently returned to the South which later emerged as a setting for

    Dashiell Hammett
