Porter, a CJR contributing editor, is director of journalism at Brooklyn College and an adjunct professor at Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism As usual the tie had disappeared, the feet were up on the desk, the glasses nestled on top of a head of fading red hair, and in between biting large chunks out of a mozzarella-and-tomato hero dripping with Tuscan olive oil, Pete Hamill was doing one of the things he enjoys most, which is spinning out a romance concerning the newspaper business. "At some point everybody sits around talking late at night and dreaming up the perfect paper," he was saying. "Usually, it's 'Goddammit, these idiots don't know how to run this thing. If we could get our hands on it we'd know what to do.' We all felt editors were trimming the best lines out of stories, or didn't recognize stories staring them in the face, or were filling the paper with stuff that was boring. There had to be a paper somewhere on which all the reporters were fabulous, all the writing was great, where the layout was slam-bang and elegant at the same time, and where people couldn't wait to get up in the morning and read it, and after you read it you felt you were not going to be the same again. We called it 'God's Paper.'"

TOOLS AS ART: The Hechinger Collection (Abrams, $ 39.95) by John Hechinger, Sr. and Pete Hamill. TOOLS contains 240 color plates and the work of more than 150 artists. John Hechinger , of Hechinger's Hardware, began collecting the fabulous 300-piece art collection displayed in this book seventeen years ago.
Pete Hamill , popular writer and best-selling author of A Drinking Life , has written the text. Interview with John Hechinger, Sr. and Pete Hamill: BC: So, how did you two get hooked up?
JH: We were introduced by our publisher, Paul Gottlieb.
BC: Tell us something about the book. It really is beautiful.
JH: Well, I remember reading once in Smithsonian Magazine that sex is merely the sublimation of man's desire to browse in hardware stores.
BC: Ha Ha. But really, how did this collection get started?
We had a new corporate office building for Hechinger's Hardware. It was state of the art in every respect. There were miles of corridor, and forty to fifty windowless offices. It was boring! Some of my associates had admired a Jim Dine in our boardroom and the rest is history.
I thought that if we could put these artists on the walls, it would raise the consciousness of the people who were dealing everyday in tens and thousands of the same item. It would raise the level of respect for their own job. It would help them see that their job was one of dignity.

"Compelling Historical Sci-Fi Novel"
Writer Pete Hamill, New York City resident, and writer for various NYC newspapers, combines elements of fantasy in this work of historical fiction that tells the tale of one man's immortality. Born in 1723, in Ireland, Cormac O'Connor is the son of an Irish father and Jewish mother. After both parents have died at the hand of the Earl of Warren, Cormac is determined to avenge their deaths. Aboard ship journeying to New York City to find Warren, he meets Kongo, an African sold into slavery. And Cormac's kindness to the young African grants him with the slave's friendship. Amidst the slave and Irish rebellion in New York in the 1740's, Kongo grants Cormac the gift of immortality in a cave, per the condition that he always remain on the island of Manhattan. Leaving Manhattan would assure him immediate death and ban him from entrance into the Otherworld. Only when he meets and makes love in the cave to a dark-skinned woman with spirals on her skin can Cormac journey to the Otherworld. Hamill has deftly portrayed the hopelessness of both the African slaves and the Irish indentured servants of the mid- eighteenth century, even as he reminds readers of the rarely-mentioned slaves who fought in the Revolutionary War without reaping the benefits of abolition. While New York's past comes alive, no one could accuse Hamill of being a romantic, as his vivid descriptions of a nineteenth century New York with no running water and epidemics of cholera leave little room for the poetry of love. This sense of realism gives an earthy feel to this novel whose only downfall seems to be that the reader is never really given much insight into Cormac's personality. But overall, this read is a fascinating combination of sci-fi and history culminating on that tragic day of September 11, 2001.

Author: Pete Hamill
Eliza Krigman Pete Hamill's story Snow In August is set in the late nineteen-forties in a poor Brooklyn neighborhood which is changing rapidly with the times. Hamill captures the life of a young boy struggling to come to terms with his own beliefs and a surrounding racist society.
The main character is an eleven year old Catholic boy, Michael Devlin, who becomes intrigued with Judaism. The book invites the reader along to witness his blossoming friendship with a lonely rabbi, which develops despite the violent opposition of a local group of anti-Semites. The powerful, universal themes of Hamill's story combine as isolation, racism, adolescence and faith in a moving story of one boy's fight against an unfair society.
Michael Devlin is an introverted youth coping with the recent loss of his father. Michael plays the role of an innocent boy attempting to become tougher and older. He spends most of his days roaming the block or playing pick- up games of ball.
As he gets older, he begins to question the opinions and beliefs of his friends and the people around him. His friends blame the Jews for the death of Christ and for hiding treasures in their synagogues. Michael defies the limits society has cast on him by wondering if the Jews are truly wrongdoers. He struggles to decide what to believe and which sources to use for support. His friends, his mother, his priest and the encyclopedia all have different views on life; he becomes unsure of which to accept. He no longer agrees with his friends and feels isolated among them.

Pete Hamill's career forged N.Y. tough Saturday, January 25, 2003 By Bob Hoover , Post-Gazette Book Editor The hero in Pete Hamill's ninth novel, "Forever," makes a deal in 1741: He can live forever if he never leaves the isle of Manhattan. The setup might be seen as a metaphor for Hamill himself, immortality aside, of course. Born in New York in 1935, he started writing about his hometown for the New York Post in 1960 and soon sported one of the city's best-read bylines, first as a reporter, then as a columnist. Newspapering in New York being a fast-changing business, he's also cranked out stories for The Times, the Village Voice and now the Daily News. Pete Hamill speaks at 7:30 p.m. at the Carnegie Music Hall, Oakland. Tickets are $16, $12 and $7 for students. Phone: 412-622-8866. Hamill's still covering NYC. Two years ago, he was at Ground Zero on Sept. 11 and spent nine days covering the story for the Daily News.

The legendary newsman, a veteran of all three of the city's tabloids, returned to the New York Daily News on January 1 for what he's calling the "third act" of his long and storied career. But this time , instead of being on the front line, walking the streets in search of tomorrow's headlines, Hamill, 61, is the editor , dispatching a new generation of Hamills, Breslins and Ephrons to the streets, subways and alleys of the Big Apple.

The personal milestone especially contributed to a sense of urgency when Hamill started to write his current novel, "Forever." "You have that sense of, 'God, there's not going to be enough time,'" says Hamill, who will appear at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland on Monday as a guest of the Drue Heinz Lectures. "I always thought there was going to be all the time in the world, and now I won't have enough time to read all those books, to play the piano, to learn to paint, the things that you postpone for the living of a life."

Pete Hamill Snow in August. In Brooklyn in the late 1940s, adolescent Michael Devlin is a dutiful son to his widowed mother and a conscientious altar boy at the parish church. One day, he meets Rabbi Judah Hirsch, a chance encounter that inaugurates a friendship with vast consequences, good and bad, for both of them. The threads of their connection widen and strengthen as the rabbi endeavors to teach Michael about his native Prague and Jewish customs and lore, and the boy, in turn, instructs the rabbi about things American, including baseball. But Michael's awakening does not stop there; sadly, he learns hard lessons, to the point of bodily harm, about anti-Semitism. An intelligent, heartfelt, and ironically charming novel that will certainly enhance the reputation of this popular writer. Author Info: Pete Hamill
It's 1947 in Brooklyn and altar boy Michael Devlin is 11 years old. He lives for the Brooklyn Dodgers, comic books, Saturday matinees and his Mother who was widowed during the War. But now his whole insular world is about to change. The Dodgers have a new player and he's black. Michael has a new friend and he's a Jewish rabbiJudah Hirsch, a refugee from the Holocaust. And Michael and the rabbi have offended the local gang of Irish toughs, The Falcons and their brutal leader, Frankie McCarthy. Just when it seemed that the War had vanquished evil, it turns out that the malevolent forces of racism and hatred have a foothold in Michael's own neighborhood. In order to survive, Michael, his mother and the rabbi have to call upon resources that they don't even realize that they possess, including even the dreadful Golem of Jewish mystic tradition. I'm not a huge Pete Hamill fan and the political agendas that are at work here are a little bit heavy handed (particularly in one fight scene at Ebbett's Field). But I'm as big a sucker as anybody for those magical fantasies of boyhood (see Boy's Life by Robert McCammon, Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury, etc.) and what really makes this book a terrific read is the relationship between Michael and Rabbi Hirsch. Michael's friends originally put him up to finding the secret buried treasure of the Jews that they think lies buried within the synagogue. But as Michael helps the rabbi with his English and teaches him about America and the rabbi in turn teaches him Yiddish and unfolds the beauties of preWar Europe, Michael discovers that the real secret treasure is love of learning.

A Brave New World For Writers
Contributed by Pete Hamill In the mauled world after September 11, writers must think long and hard about their craft and the way they use their talents. In downtown Manhattan as I write, workers are still prying the bodies of more than 5000 human beings from the twisted steel and concrete of the World Trade Center. The life of every one of them was as dense, complicated, layered as any novel. They each traveled separate paths to reach their places on this baroque and horrifying version of the Bridge of San Luis Rey. They were real people, not fictions. But their deaths must challenge all of us who continue to live, and most particularly, writers. September 11 was a savage act of fundamentalist barbarism, brutal in its contempt for human life. It also announced a great change in the way all human beings live and the way we work. No human beings, not even Americans, are now invulnerable. The genie is out of the bottle, as ferociously opaque as the dust cloud that rose from the collapse of the Twin Towers. All of us must struggle, in our separate ways, to see through that cloud. Writers have always struggled to give form and order to chaos, and writers now alive must do the same. Faced with barbarism, we must continue to affirm the humane, liberal, tolerant values of modern civilization. The very existence of human life on the planet might depend upon that effort.

    Blood on Their Hands

    The Corrupt and Brutal World
    of Professional Boxing

By PETE HAMILL (Originally Published in Esquire Magazine – June 1, 1996) Old loves are a long time dying. They can survive deceptions and separations, petty cruelties and fleeting passions. But, eventually, they give way to the grinding erosions of time. And suddenly, one cold morning, they are dead. For too long a time, I loved the brutal sport of prize fighting. But I've arrived at last at that cold morning. You cannot love anything that lives in a sewer. And the world of boxing is more fetid and repugnant now than any other time in its squalid history. Every month, in this era of multimillion-dollar purses, of cable television and pay-per-view, prizefights are legally fixed through matchmaking. There are bogus champions in every weight division. Brave kids make Faustian bargains to get title shots and are then robbed and exploited by rapacious promoters. When their brains are mauled or their eyes beaten into blindness, they are treated like derelicts, mocked and abandoned. In this country, old dogs are treated better than old prizefighters. I don't want to look at that filthy world anymore or contribute to its further existence. Not the way it is now.
