Biography: Pete Hamill
Pete Hamill was born in Brooklyn, N. Y. in 1935. He is the oldest of seven children of Irish immigrants from Belfast, Northern Ireland and attended Catholic schools as a child. He left school at 16 to work in the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a sheetmetal worker, and then went on to the United States Navy. While serving in the Navy, he completed his high school education. Then, using the educational benefits of the G.I. Bill of Rights, he attended Mexico City College in 1956-1957, studying painting and writing.
For several years, he worked as a graphic designer, while studying at Pratt Institute. Then in 1960, he went to work as a reporter for the New York Post. A long career in journalism followed. He has been a columnist for the New York Post, the Daily News, and New York Newsday, and has won many journalistic awards. As a journalist, he has covered wars in Vietnam, Nicaragua, Lebanon and Northern Ireland. From his base in New York he has also covered murders, crime, the police, along with the great domestic disturbances of the 1960s. His work has also been published in all the major magazines, including Esquire, New York, the New York Times Magazine; he is currently on the staff of the New Yorker. Most recently, his essay on the Second Amendment for mightywords.com stirred controversy and argument on the Internet.
Since the 1950s, he has had a continuing interest in Mexico, living there for extended periods, visiting every year, covering the events in Tlatelolco in 1968, the Olympic Games that followed, and the earthquake and its aftermath in 1985. For six months in 1986, he served as editor of the Mexico City News. He has one additional distinction: he has been editor-in-chief of both the New York Post and the New York Daily News.

Why Sinatra Matters
Why Sinatra Matters
OVERTURE
by Pete Hamill When Frank Sinatra died on the evening of May 14, 1998, the news made the front pages of newspapers all over the world. Many ran extra editions and followed with special supplements. There was little sense of shock; he had been a long time dying. He had also been a long time living, and so the obituaries were full of his life and times. It was mandatory to chronicle his wins and losses, his four marriages, his battles, verbal and physical, with reporters and photographers. His romances required many inches of type. There were accounts of his fierce temper, his brutalities, his drunken cruelties. Some described him as a thug or a monster, whose behavior was redeemed only by his talent. We read brief charts of his political odyssey from left to right. The shadow cast upon him by the Mob was also an inevitable part of the stories. And there were tales of his personal generosity to friends and strangers and the millions of dollars he had raised for charities. He was clearly a complicated man. "Being an eighteen-karat manic depressive," he was quoted in many of the obituaries, "and having lived a life of violent emotional contradictions, I have perhaps an overacute capacity for sadness and elation."

INTERVIEW January 10, 2003
In this interview with Bookreporter.com's Tom Callahan, acclaimed novelist and journalist Pete Hamill discusses his latest novel FOREVER , conveys his love of New York City and explains why he feels "New York fatalism" has helped make life "tolerable" since 9/11/01.
BRC: Is it true that you completed FOREVER on the morning of 9/11/01 and were about to drop it off at the publishers when the attack took place? Did you then have to do a lot of rewriting?
PH:
Yes. After three years of work, I finished the manuscript at 11:20 on the evening of September 10. I sent an e-mail to my editor, saying I was finished, then hugged my wife. I had an 8:15 meeting at the Museum of the City of New York on Chambers Street, and at about 8:50 the world changed. After the emergency settled down, many days later, and I turned to the novel again, I knew I had to do much more than I'd already done. That final draft took almost another year.
BRC: Your description of the attack is powerful and journalistic. How difficult was it to write this? Were you afraid that, with the attack so fresh in our minds, it would overwhelm the fictional story?

Humans have dreamed of eternal life since the beginning of time. From Ponce de Leon's search for the Fountain of Youth to the latest breakthroughs of science and medicine, people have sought to extend life. Imagine if - instead of being haunted by the knowledge of your own death - you had the gift of forever? Would it be a blessing or a curse?
Cormac Samuel O'Connor, a poor, yet proud Irish immigrant, finds out in this glorious, ambitious, hugely entertaining novel by Pete Hamill, who for the past 40 years has been one of America's leading journalists.
Cormac grows up with his loving parents in Northern Ireland. When the British Earl of Warren, a slave trader, murders his father, Cormac must avenge his death. He follows the earl to colonial New York, arriving in 1740. On the voyage over, he befriends an African babalawo, or shaman, who is in bondage. Once in New York, Cormac finds that Africans are being sold into slavery at Wall Street. Also auctioned off as indentured servants are Irish immigrants, forced to work in slave-like conditions to pay off their passage to the New World.
What's forever in this book is the fight for justice. Cormac is soon not only on his personal quest, but involved in the New York slave uprising of 1741, a real event which resulted in the hanging of 18 Africans and four Irish. For this, he is rewarded with the gift of eternal life with one big provision - if he can leaves the island of Manhattan, he will die.

Lost souls blowing in the wind Strong winds kick up earth yesterday as mourners gather in the foundation of the World Trade Center. The wind began to blow at exactly 8:46 a.m., when the city was hushed for a frozen minute of silence. The wind was fierce and sudden, driving from the west across harbor and river, pushing violently through the spaces between buildings. The wind streamed into the 16 acres where the World Trade Center once stood. It turned an American flag attached to a construction crane into a flat, colored rectangle. It made flags lashed to buildings flap and billow and strain against their cords. Hats flew off. Old people held onto the young. The wind blew without remorse, indifferent to the speaking of the names of the dead.

You do such good reviews, even on bad books. It might even inspire me to shed my slough of despond over the last several books I have read, and actually write a review myself. Please do not hold your breath, though. The lump under the covers rarely moves these days.
Mary Feb 06 '03 3:45 pm PST Re: Nice review Reply to this comment by Grouch Yes, I'd read that, too. The end result is that it only made the final third of the book drag out to excruciating, sentimental lengths. I thought about working it into the review somehow, but figured I'd already put enough nails in his coffin. So, unlike Mr. Hamill, I practiced restraint. Feb 05 '03 9:04 am PST Nice review Reply to this comment by MiDoyle David: Hamill recently mentioned in an interview about the novel that he actually finished it on 9/10/01 or so and it was the events of 9/11 that forced him to go back and redo much of it as he felt he couldn't end it without discussing the horrors of that day and the resulting aftermath. In any event, I read his columns regularly and if he may have stretched a bit too far with this work, there's always another column. cheers

Slavery reparations unfair No simple solutions for horror Several hundred demonstrators marched Saturday at the National Mall in Washington in support of reparations for slavery. Slavery ended in New York on July 4, 1827, almost 44 years after the last British ships sailed out of our harbor. Five years later, New Jersey finally became the last slave state in the North. The disgusting institution continued in the South for more than three decades until it ended at last in the horrors of the Civil War.
