Thom Gunn's poetry has always been celebratory. In the 50s, as an English poet of the Movement generation, his icons were leather-clad bikers, Elvis Presley, soldiers - the rough, tough men of action - and he famously wrote "I praise the overdog, from Alexander / To those who would not play with Stephen Spender", lines that are still a joy today. In the 1960s, Gunn moved to the US with his lover; what followed was a celebration of San Francisco, the boys, the bathhouses, the drugs, the city itself. It has been a wide-ranging celebration employing a generous breadth of forms, from imitations of 17th-century poets through syllabics and free verse. The epidemic of the 80s - the lives cut short, the gutting of a joyful extended family - is rendered in The Man With Night Sweats (1992), one of the outstanding volumes of the decade: elegaic, beautiful, rigorous and resolutely affirmative even in the face of grief.

GUNN, Thom. Fighting Terms. Oxford: Fantasy Press,Oxford: Fantasy Press, 1954. Octavo, pp. [2], 44, [2]. Original yellow cloth, upper board lettered and tooled in red. Author's signature, dated 1954, in black ink to front free endpaper. Cloth extremities rubbed, light soiling, internally clean, without dust-jacket as issued. A very good plus copy. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED COPY of the author's first substantial collection. One of an unspecified number from the first issue with uncorrected error on page 38 line 1, from a total edition of 305 copies only. Gunn wrote many of these poems during his second and third year at Trinity College, Cambridge. His rational tone and accomplished use of conventional forms have linked him with the Movement, a group of poets, including Kinglsey Amis, John Wain and Philip Larkin, reacting against the tangled neo-Romanticism of the New Apocalypse. Gunn's first poem was published in a 1951 issue of Cambridge Today. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Simon Finch Rare Books ; click here for further details.

Length : Text-only version Prev Index Next Your comments on this poem to attach to the end [ microfaq mclose@ The Hug It was your birthday, we had drunk and dined Half of the night with our old friend Who'd showed us in the end To a bed I reached in one drunk stride. Already I lay snug, And drowsy with the wine dozed on one side. I dozed, I slept. My sleep broke on a hug, Suddenly, from behind, In which the full lengths of our bodies pressed: Your instep to my heel, My shoulder-blades against your chest. It was not sex, but I could feel The whole strength of your body set, Or braced, to mine, And locking me to you As if we were still twenty-two When our grand passion had not yet Become familial. My quick sleep had deleted all Of intervening time and place. I only knew The stay of your secure firm dry embrace. Thom Gunn

Still Life I shall not soon forget
The greyish-yellow skin
To which the face had set:
Lids tights: nothing of his,
No tremor from within,
Played on the surfaces.
He still found breath, and yet
It was an obscure knack.
I shall not soon forget
The angle of his head, Arrested and reared back On the crisp field of bed, Back from what he could neither Accept, as one opposed, Nor, as a life-long breather, Consentingly let go, The tube his mouth enclosed In an astonished O. "I do remember one remarkable party, or rather Karl told me about it because I was passed out from drinking about a half-gallon of sherry. It took place at Newnham, and a don had to be specially brought from her bed, in her nightdress and dressing-gown, to open a side gate, normally locked, so that I could be carried away more easily to a waiting taxi. She stood there in pained silence, waiting to give permission for the closing of the gate, and it seems that as I was being hauled past her my unconscious body gave a terrific fart, as if adding the sin of ingratitude to that gluttony." Introduction
I have written this study guide for students taking GCE Advanced level (AS and A2) courses in English literature, and other comparable literature courses. It is suitable for undergraduates and the general reader who is interested in the study of poetry. This guide was originally written to cover a selection of poems prescribed as a set text for exam, but can be used as a way in to the study of Thom Gunn's poems generally. The poems considered explicitly here are these:
  • From The Sense of Movement On the Move, The Corridor From My Sad Captains In Santa Maria del Popolo, Claus von Stauffenberg, My Sad Captains From Touch The Goddess, Touch, In the Tank, The Vigil of Corpus Christi From Moly The Sandman, The Discovery of the Pacific, Sunlight
All these collections are currently out of print, but they are available in Thom Gunn's Collected Poems pub. Noonday, 1995; ISBN 0374524335. On an Advanced level course you should study your chosen text (here a range of poems) in very close detail. In preparing for an exam you need to learn to see the whole wood, as well as look at individual trees. Back to top In this tutorial you will study a selection of poems from a number of collections by Thom Gunn. While you are expected to show an individual and personal response to the poems, this does not mean that any view is as good as another. You should be aware of the critical consensus (i.e. generally-held views) in regard to Gunn's work. In the first place, this will come from your teacher's informed exposition of the texts, but you must feel free to question anything which is not clear. If you have insights of your own, please contribute these to discussion: it is quite usual for students to discover things of interest which may have been overlooked. You may also wish to read commentaries by professional critics. The most accessible guide for students is Alan Bold's
