Who was Felix Paul Greve/ Frederick Philip Grove? A Biographical Sketch FPG at the University of the Saarland - Diary (Visitors, Exhibitions, Talks, Performances, Conferences) Publications 1. Who Was FPG (1879-1948)? A Biographical Sketch
FPG established his lasting fame as Frederick Philip Grove, Canadian novelist and intellectual, and by several accounts the founder of a post-colonial, modern Canadian literature. Between 1922 and 1947 Grove published about 15 books: novels, autobiographies and collections of essays and short-stories. Beside his novels about the Canadian prairie and its inhabitants his biggest success were his autobiographical writings A Search for America (1927) and In Search of Myself (1946). For In Search of Myself Grove received the renowned "Governor's General Award" in the category "non-fiction". Today, knowing what we know about Grove's life, the category "non-fiction" symbolizes an ironical twist in his career. While in his "memoirs" Grove claimed a wealthy Swede as his father and a cosmopolitan Scotswoman as his mother, in reality, he was born into a petit-bourgeois German family. His identity as the former Felix Paul Greve was discovered only in 1973, twenty-five years after his death, by Douglas O. Spettigue. Klaus Martens's recent biography of Felix Paul Greve ( Felix Paul Greve's Karriere: Frederick Philip Grove in Deutschland ), based on newly discovered documentary material, re-examines and extends our knowledge of Grove's German years.

"Guide to the Major Holdings of the Department of Archives & Special Collections, the University of Manitoba Libraries", 1993, pp. 24-26.
For a newer and more complete description of the FPG Collections see the FPG website Frederick Philip Grove Fonds, 1913-1979 3.1 m; 24 boxes MSS 2, PC 2, MF 2 The collection consists of correspondence, manuscript copybooks to his published and unpublished novels, short stories, articles and poems, news clippings, financial documents, biographical material, and photographs. Much of the collection has also been microfilmed. Most of the material is original while the rest is photocopied from originals at Queen's University, the University of Toronto and elsewhere. The majority of the published short stories are photocopies of magazine or newspaper articles; however, there are some original typescripts. Tales From the Margin, a book of short stories posthumously published in 1971 and edited by Desmond Pacey, is included in original typescript form with the other published books. News clippings and financial documents are in chronological order. In 1991 Grove's private library was donated by Leonard Grove, a surviving son living in Toronto. Initial instalment was acquired from Mrs. Catherine Grove in 1962. A second acquisition was obtained from the Grove family in 1964. The Grove library was obtained in 1991.

Grove, Frederick Philip (1879-1948) Author. Born Felix Paul Greve in Prussia, he lived a wandering life and privately published several books (including Fanny Essler and Mauermeister Ihles Haus , as well as a collection of poetry entitled Wanderungen ) after being convicted of fraud in 1903 and imprisoned for a year. Upon his release he was unable to make a living with his pen, and he fell ever deeper into debt. He first fled to Sweden and then in 1909 to North America, ending up in Manitoba via North Dakota as schoolteacher Fred Grove. His knowledge of German led to his appointment to teach at Kronsfeld School in the Mennonite village of Haskett near Winkler. After attending normal school, he became principal of the intermediate school at Winkler, then moved to Virden and in 1916 to Gladstone, where he became principal of the high school. Two years later he moved to a small rural school near Falmouth. The bushland country of this area northeast of Gladstone was an environment that appealed to Grove, and it became the setting of his finest novels as well as the basis of Over Prairie Trails (1922) and The Turn of the Year (1923). In 1923 he retired to devote himself to writing, and he published his first Canadian novel

By the time of Grove's death, in 1948, he was recognized as one of the most important men of letters in Canada. Frederick Philip Grove 's "The Dirge"
(Edited and with an Introduction by Terrence Craig) The first two and the fourth parts of Grove's typescript entitled "Poems" have been published in the tenth number of Canadian Poetry (Spring/Summer, 1982). Below are the remainder, the third quarter from page 26 to 62, entitled "The Dirge." In my introduction to the other poems I pointed out that most of this typescript could be dated with some certainty to the months following the death of Grove's daughter in July, 1927: "The Dirge" poems all refer to this event in one way or another. I have made no emendations and present the poems as in the typescript, although I have numbered the lines. The poems themselves are numbered 1-33, but there is no #32. This may be the typist's error, as it seems likely that the lines on p. 61 constitute a separate poem that should have been numbered #32. Nevertheless, I have retained the numbering system of the typescript, omitting #32. In April, 1932 the
