For thirty-two years, the Judge had quietly refused to hold court on July 13, Forrest's birthday. It came with another letter, a magazine, and two invoices, and was routinely placed in the law school mailbox of Professor Ray Atlee. He recognized it immediately since such envelopes had been a part of his life for as long as he could remember. It was from his father, a man he too called the Judge. Professor Atlee studied the envelope, uncertain whether he should open it right there or wait a moment. Good news or bad, he never knew with the Judge, though the old man was dying and good news had been rare. It was thin and appeared to contain only one sheet of paper; nothing unusual about that. The Judge was frugal with the written word, though he'd once been known for his windy lectures from the bench.

V Northwestu hrál jeden rok baseball, vubec nedbal na své známky, proste chtel hrát jenom baseball. Po roce Grisham odesel na Delta State University, aby vylepsil své výsledky v baseballu. Zde ovsem zjistil, ze nechce skoncit jako baseballový hrác, a rozhodl se venovat intenzivne studiu. V roce 1975 prestoupil na Státní univerzitu v Mississippi (Mississippi State University, MSU), která se mu uz od samého zacátku zamlouvala. Zde zacal studovat ekonomiku, v roce 1977 na MSU promoval. Po studiu na MSU nastoupil na práva na Univerzitu v Mississippi, z nichz promoval v roce 1981. V tomtéz roce se ozenil s Renee Jonesovou.

B Y D W I G H T G A R N E R Illustration by Eric White OXFORD, Miss. W hile he was alive, William Faulkner never won any popularity contests here in his adopted hometown. The locals dubbed him "Count No Count" because of his dandified aloofness and lack of a steady job. He quit his position as postmaster because, he said, he "didn't want to be at the beck and call of every son-of-a-bitch with the price of a two-cent stamp." You can still walk into J.E. Neilson's department store, on Oxford's shady town square, and find a framed copy of Faulkner's testy response to a dunning note on a long overdue bill: "If this [$10 payment] dont [sic] suit you, the only alternative I can think of is, in the old Miltonic phrase, sue and be damned." Adding insult to injury, no doubt, was the fact that many here rarely understood a word their resident Nobel Prize-winner put to paper. On the other hand, Oxford's latest literary legend, the nice-guy thriller writer John Grisham, is nearly as famous here for having been a Little League coach and a Sunday school teacher as he is for being a novelist. A little amiability goes a long way in Oxford (pop. 10,300), and Grisham's cheerful disposition might help explain why, at midnight on a memorably nasty and wind-ripped night last week, while tornadoes were chewing up mobile-home parks in nearby Arkansas, Mary R. Minor and three of her friends were huddling against the driving rain outside of Square Books, Oxford's venerable independent bookstore. "We're always the first in line for Grisham's book signings," Minor says. "We don't mind getting a little wet."

Grisham werd wereldberoemd met 'Advocaat van de duivel' De elfjarige hoofdpersoon Mark is, samen met zijn drie jaar jongere broertje, getuige van een zelfmoord.Voor het zover is heeft Mark echter contact met de pleger, een louche advocaat die voor hij tot zijn daad overgaat Mark een onthullende bekentenis doet. De maffia, de rechterlijke macht en de FBI stellen alles in het werk om de informatie waarover Mark beschikt uit hem los te peuteren. Omdat de jongen bepaald niet dom is neemt hij een vrouwelijke advocaat in de arm, die hem met raad en daad terzijde staat. Mark komt terecht in een mallemolen van juridische touwtrekkerij, bedreiging door misdadigers en de onfrisse praktijken waarmee overheidsdienaren hem onder druk zetten. Hij dreigt het slachtoffer te worden van de ambities en eerzucht van een rechter en een meedogenloze nieuwsjager. DE MOORDENDE GREEP VAN JOHN GRISHAM John Grisham: 'Advocaat van de duivel' Wie pas bij de -onlangs verschenen- achtste druk een bespreking aan het betreffende boek wijdt, is op z'n minst een verklaring schuldig. Die verklaring is betrekkelijk eenvoudig. Soms komt de lezer een auteur op het spoor bij de verschijning van een nieuw boek, waarop om de een of andere reden zijn aandacht werd gevestigd. Het boek beviel hem en hij begon zich af te vragen of de schrijver wellicht meer boeken had gepubliceerd. Dat was het geval met John Grisham, bij de verschijning van zijn nieuwste 'legal-thriller' enkele maanden geleden. Zijn eerste 'The Firm' verscheen in 1991 onder de Nederlandse titel 'Advocaat van de duivel' en maakte hem in een klap wereldberoemd. Er zijn inmiddels 17 miljoen exemplaren van verkocht en vanaf 14 oktober zal de verfilming met Tom Cruise in de hoofdrol in tientallen Nederlandse bioscopen te zien zijn. In het kader van die film kwam de uitgever met een nieuwe druk, met de filmomslag waarop Tom Cruise prominent aanwezig is. Na zijn succesvol afgesloten rechtenstudie wordt de jonge jurist Mitchell McDeere door enkele advocatenkantoren een baan aangeboden. Een kantoor in Memphis belooft hem het meest (hoogste salaris, hulp bij de hypotheek voor de aankoop van een huis, overname van de studieschuld, BMW, bonussen) en Mitch hoeft er niet lang over na te denken voor hij samen met zijn vrouw Abby besluit op het aanbod in te gaan. Het kantoor maakt in eerste instantie een goede indruk met veelbelovende vooruitzichten, al moet McDeere er hard voor werken. De leiding vereist een absolute loyaliteit en bemoeit zich eveneens graag, zij het aanvankelijk op subtiele wijze, met het persoonlijke leven van de werknemers. Het verbaast Abby enigszins dat 'het kantoor' een gelukkig huwelijk wil helpen bevorderen, door de nadruk te leggen op het opbouwen van een gezinsleven, bij voorkeur met een niet uit huis werkende vrouw en een paar kinderen.
