By that I mean, do you know what your grandparents and/or your aunts/uncles are/were like as people rather that just as big folk with big voices who told you to go out and play? Yeah? Well, consider yourself lucky. Some of us didn't and wish, at times, we did. But I've had a glimpse of what this must be like. For I've been fortunate enough to read Shadows of Ashland Some dozen years ago, I was on an airline shuttle bus riding from Providence to Logan Airport after attending a convention. That weekend, I had read a freebie SF digest magazine because it contained a story by one of my favourite authors. In the same issue was a story called

Abstract: A 1,000-word profile of Canadian SF writer Terence M. Green by Nebula-Award-winning SF writer Robert J. Sawyer. Green is the author of the novels Barking Dogs, Children of the Rainbow, Shadow of Ashland, and Blue Limbo , and is a contributor to and the 1994 Tor anthology Northern Stars. Interview conducted February 1992 at Green's home; first published in Aloud, Terence M. Green is boldly going where no Canadian Science Fiction Author has gone before. He's the first SF author in this country to cross-over from having his books issued as genre SF in the States to having a novel released as a mainstream work from a major domestic publisher. True, when Margaret Atwood and Hugh MacLennan wrote their SF novels The Handmaid's Tale and Voices in Time , they were released without the words "science fiction" on the spine. But unlike them, Green comes squarely out of the genre tradition of SF: he's best known for his brilliant short work in the American digests Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction Children of the Rainbow , as a mainstream trade paperback.

Green, Terence M(ichael) , born in Canada on 2 February 1947 Green, a high-school English teacher in his native Toronto, had his first SF story, "Japanese Tea," published in the Australian anthology Alien Worlds in 1978. His first sale to the U.S. was "Till Death Do Us Part" in the December 1981 ; he's had three other stories in that magazine since, plus three in Asimov's (including a collaboration with Andrew Weiner in the June 1988 issue). Green is a soft SF writer; his work is thoughtful, introspective, and character-driven, and most often explores family relationships. Green's first novel, Barking Dogs (1988), expanding his brilliant short story of the same name from the May 1984 Ark of Ice contains a sequel novelette entitled "Blue Limbo." Green's second novel, Children of the Rainbow Ten of his stories were collected in The Woman Who Is the Midnight Wind (1987) from Canada's Pottersfield Press. Notable stories include "Ashland, Kentucky" (first published in

Leo Nolan's father has just passed away. It triggers the wanderlust that took him to Ashland where he met Jeanne, his second wife, whom he is crazy about. She has a son, Adam, a University of Toronto English major, by Bobby who now lives in Dayton, Ohio but never seemed interested in being a father. While Adam wonders what his bio-father is like, Leo is haunted by dreams about his paternal relationship and the mysterious nightly movement of his father's personal effects. Leo decides a road trip with the ghost of his father is needed to find out what Bobby Swiss is like and maybe, at the same time, work out why he and his father grew into the men they became. Is he destined to be his father's son or is he the fellow he thinks he can be?

The Ottawa Citizen "a jewel of a novel."
