Biography of Robert Graves
Robert Graves: A Twentieth Century Life Robert Graves, born a little over a hundred years ago, is one of our century's most versatile and original writers. Equally at home in poetry, fiction, and many forms of non-fiction, Grave's life serves as an example of continuing self-renewal and his work addresses the most agonizing problems of the twentieth century. The immense literary production of this writer, scarcely examined by academic scholarship, constitutes one of the great treasures of our time. Graves is probably best known as the author of historical novels. Especially well known are the so-called Claudius novels ( I, Claudius and Claudius the God). Graves is not the kind of writer who uses history and literature to write escapist narratives. On the contrary, his frontal, penetrating studies of contemporary history demonstrate his stature as a committed, politically astute writer. Between the two European wars, Graves writes cogent, careful books on two of the most important developments of that turbulent period. In The Long Weekend Graves studies social and political developments following the Great War. This deceptively simple book is constructed with great subtlety. On one level, it is splendid social history. Graves draws a lucid, detailed portrait of the social experimentation that was prevalent during the Roaring Twenties. He couples this portrait with a detailed analysis of political life between the two wars. Beneath his crisp social and political commentary, Graves probes the central conundrum of the whole period: how does a culture allow itself to slip into yet another war after the horrible bloodletting of the First World War? Are there forces within European life that lead inevitably to instability and war? If so, what can be done to neutralize these forces?

Robert Graves
"The White Goddess"
English poet and novelist Robert Graves reads an excerpt from "The White Goddess," a study of anthropology and mythology. Graves describes how poetry is rooted in the eternal battle between age and youth, male and female, and how the "White Goddess" or earth mother became the muse that inspired generations of European poets.
Robert Graves, Part 2
Robert Graves reads his poems "The Hills of May," "Angry Samson," "In Procession," "Warning to Children," "The Cool Web," "Song of Contrariety," and "The Presence." Graves was born in 1895 and was given the traditional English classical education. He became a classic scholar and poet, translating Greek literature and creating terse, tightly rhymed verses.
Robert Graves, Part 3
English poet Robert Graves reads "Flying Crooked," "Any Honest Housewife," "A Jealous Man," "The Cloak," "Time," "Ogres and Pygmies," "To Bring the Dead to Life," and "Like Snow." Graves' compact poems draw heavily on his classical background and include numerous allusions to classical themes.

By 1917, though still an active serviceman, Graves had published three volumes. In 1918, he spent a year in the trenches, where he was again severely wounded. In January 1918, at the age of twenty-two, he married eighteen-year-old Nancy Nicholson, with whom he was to have four children. Traumatized by the war, he went to Oxford with his wife and took a position at St. John's College. Graves's early volumes of poetry, like those of his contemporaries, deal with natural beauty and bucolic pleasures, and with the consequences of the First World War. Over the Brazier and Fairies and Fusiliers earned for Graves the reputation as an accomplished war poet. After meeting the American poet and theorist Laura Riding in 1926, Graves's poetry underwent a significant transformation. Douglas Day has written that the "influence of Laura Riding is quite possibly the most important single element in [Graves's] poetic career: she persuaded him to curb his digressiveness and his rambling philosophizing and to concentrate instead on terse, ironic poems written on personal themes." In 1927, Graves and his first wife separated permanently, and in 1929 he published

Navigation Page Robert Graves Robert Graves Robert von Ranke Graves was born in Wimbledon on July 24, 1895, the middle child of his father's second family of five. Graves's father already had five children from his marriage to his first wife (who had died of consumption (TB) in 1886). Graves began to write poetry while still at Charterhouse School. He was encouraged in this by one of his master's at Charterhouse, the mountaineer, George Mallory, and also by Edward Marsh (who also encouraged Siegfried Sassoon ). When war broke out, Graves joined the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He got to know Siegfried Sassoon while serving out in France. The two became firm friends and spent hours discussing poetry and what they would do after the War. Graves had written some realistic poetry about the War, which he showed to Sassoon early in their friendship. At that point Sassoon was still writing chivalric war poetry and he disapproved of the realism of Graves's war poetry, rather ironically in light of the fact that Graves was later to bemoan the gloominess of Sassoon's and Owen's poetry. Whilst serving in France Graves was badly wounded and mistakenly reported dead. Sassoon was very upset and wrote a poem about the loss of his friend
