GRADUATE STUDENT RECEIVES AWARD FOR MAKING
POET JORIE GRAHAM MORE ACCESSIBLE
BLACKSBURG, November 27, 2000 Terry Pettinger, daughter of David and P.J. O'Brien of Melbourne, Fla., won the Virginia Tech 2000 William Preston Thesis Award. The award is the university's highest academic award for master's degree students. Her advisor, English Professor Thomas Gardner, explains that "Pettinger's thesis is an attempt to isolate and describe a certain intellectual tension that runs through the six books of poetry that Jorie Graham has written in the last two decades." The thesis is "Where Intellect and Intuition Converge: Epistemological Errancies in the Poetry of Jorie Graham." Graham is the major American poet of her generation, having won a Pulitzer Prize and a MacArthur "genius" award, and been appointed to a Harvard professorship. But her work is enormously difficult, "seeking through a constantly shifting series of experiments to study and discover new and vital ways to approach the world linguistically," Gardner explains. The poet fears that "we have begun to lose the sense that language has the power or potential to allow us to work out our deepest problems," Gardner explains. "Words seem limited or corrupt or narrow or too slow: they're only used to sell things; nobody trusts them."

Award-Winning Poet Jorie Graham to Read at Smith The Poetry Center at Smith College will host poet Jorie Graham at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, in Wright Hall Auditorium. Widely recognized as a leading voice in American poetry today, Graham is celebrated for her astonishing philosophical tapestries and intensely individual style.
"She provides," writes The Nation, "all the satisfactions we expect from poetry aural beauty, emotional weight along with an intellectual rigor we don't expect." Born in New York City, raised in Italy and educated in French schools, Graham studied philosophy at the Sorbonne and filmmaking at New York University before turning to poetry in her mid-20s. Since 1983 she has been on the permanent faculty of the renowned Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa and recently succeeded Seamus Heaney as Boylston Professor at Harvard University (the first woman to hold this position). Graham's numerous collections of poetry include "The Dream of the Unified Field: Selected Poems"

http://iberia.vassar.edu/~mijoyce/SMargolin/cppgraham.html
Graham's poem "The Geese" (see Appendix A for complete poem) begins with "Today as I hang out the wash I see them again, a code" (Graham, Jorie. The Dream of the Unified Field . New Jersey: The Ecco Press, 1995, pp. 12-13.). To Graham, the geese flying overhead are a kind of language, a key to another meaning. Graham is a poet that inhabits tensions. Most of her work pushes at somehow trying to reconcile the inconsistencies in this world and her life. Coding is of the language of computer programming, the stuff that runs it all, but which is rarely seen, integral but hidden, and indecipherable for most people. Graham's code though, unlike programming source code, is above"For days they have been crossing. We live beneath these geese // as if beneath the passage of time, or a most perfect heading." The notion that something else controls what is visible, what is presented, that something is always connected to something else, as occurs in computer language, is for Graham applicable to the natural world. But she asserts that " things will not remain connected , / will not heal," hinting that "things" are not in their best form. The following lines, "and the world thickens with texture instead of history, / texture instead of place" indicate that the piling up of texture is not desirable, that history and place would be better. Without history, something is always new, always at its beginning, not established, not having any place. It is a state of detachment from anything, a lack of being connected.

RELEASE UPON RECEIPT Sept. 19, 1997 Contact: Dawn Goodlove, media relations director (319) 895-4232; (h) 644-2735 Pulitzer Prize-winner Jorie Graham reads poetry at Cornell MOUNT VERNON Jorie Graham, winner of a Pulitzer Prize in 1996 for her book of selected poems, "The Dream of the Unified Field," will read from her poetry at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in Hedges Conference Room in The Commons on the Cornell College campus. She will field questions from the audience following her reading. Admission is free. Graham runs the poetry division of the Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa and also serves as the poetry editor for the Colorado Review. In addition to the Pulitzer, she has received numerous awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Genius Grant from the MacArthur Foundation. She is one of the 12 chancellors of the Academy of American Poets. A profile in the July 14, 1997, New Yorker said, "Typically, Graham's poems begin with a mundane incident or observation (she brings her daughter a forgotten leotard; she finds two juncos trapped in her house; she examines a painting or re-examines a myth) and then go shooting off into heady realms of metaphysical questioning." Her latest book of poems, "The Errancy," was published this summer. The New Yorker said her new collection "is like taking a plunge into a surging river: Her rhythms are a little too fast and a little too powerful; there are times when the current sucks you under and you feel yourself struggling for air. And yet the exhilaration of the ride is undeniable."
