Stephen Jay Gould dies
Public face of evolution dies of cancer aged 60.
21 May 2002 JOHN WHITFIELD Stephen Jay Gould: 1941 - 2002. Stephen Jay Gould, one of the world's most famous evolutionary biologists, died of cancer yesterday aged 60. Gould's accessible and entertaining writing made him the public face of evolution, while his provocative ideas stirred up academic debate. Gould's powers as a popularizer made him famous beyond science. In 1982 he appeared on the cover of Newsweek . And in 1997 he attained the ultimate mark of contemporary celebrity - a cameo on The Simpsons Gould authored more than 20 books. Nine are collections of essays, culled from the monthly column in Natural History magazine that he wrote for 25 years. These essays centered on evolution, but often used examples from art, history and baseball - a lifelong passion. His longer works include the award-winning Wonderful Life , on the fossils of the Burgess Shale, and The Mismeasure of Man , a critique of intelligence testing.

Stephen J. Gould. (Staff photo by Jon Chase) Gould, the Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology, spent his professional career at Harvard. He wrote widely on topics ranging from baseball to the Piltdown Man hoax to the Sept. 11 tragedy. He appeared on the cover of Newsweek in 1982, and colleagues called him "the bulldog of evolutionary biology" for his outspoken advocacy of his views. "I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Stephen Jay Gould," said Harvard University President Lawrence H. Summers. "The Harvard community and the world of science have lost a brilliant scholar whose research helped redefine our notion of who we are and where we came from. He was also a gifted teacher who brought important scientific ideas vividly to life for his students and for the wider public. We will miss him greatly, and we will continue to learn from his work for generations to come." "Secondly, he was the best science writer for the public when it came to explaining evolution. Steve did not try to make it simple, he tried and succeeded in explaining the complications. He made readers appreciate how messy and variable life is. Rather than being a popularizer of science, Steve always told the truth in ways people could understand, and he did it better than anyone," Lewontin added.

Stephen Jay Gould dies at 60
Stephen Jay Gould, Harvard's outspoken and often controversial paleontologist whose groundbreaking work on evolutionary theory - coupled with his award-winning writings - brought an expanded world of science to thousands of readers, died Monday morning (May 20) in Manhattan of metastasized lung cancer. He was 60. Steven Jay Gould Gould, along with Niles Eldredge, a paleontologist at New York's Museum of Natural History, developed an evolutionary theory called "punctuated equilibrium," where long periods of evolutionary stability are broken by shorter spurts of evolutionary change, perhaps sparked by external events such as climate change or the impact of a comet. The theory contrasts with more traditional evolutionists, who believe evolution is a slow, steady process occurring at a nearly constant rate. Gould, the Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology, spent his professional career at Harvard. He wrote widely on topics ranging from baseball to the Piltdown Man hoax to the Sept. 11 tragedy. He appeared on the cover of Newsweek in 1982, and colleagues called him "the bulldog of evolutionary biology" for his outspoken advocacy of his views.

THE EVOLUTION OF LIFE ON THE EARTH
    A SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN article.
The history of life is not necessarily progressive; it is certainly not predictable. The earth's creatures have evolved through a series of contingent and fortuitous events.
STEPHEN JAY GOULD teaches biology, geology and the history of science at Harvard University, where he has been on the faculty since 1967. He received an A.B. from Antioch College and a PhD. in paleontology from Columbia University. Well known for his popular scientific writings, in particular his monthly column in Natural History magazine, he is the author of 13 books. Some creators announce their inventions with grand éclat. God proclaimed, "Fiat lux," and then flooded his new universe with brightness. Others bring forth great discoveries in a modest guise, as did Charles Darwin in defining his new mechanism of evolutionary causality in 1859: "I have called this principle, by which each slight variation, if useful, is preserved, by the term Natural Selection." Natural selection is an immensely powerful yet beautifully simple theory that has held up remarkably well, under intense and unrelenting scrutiny and testing, for 135 years. In essence, natural selection locates the mechanism of evolutionary change in a "struggle" among organisms for reproductive success, leading to improved fit of populations to changing environments. ( Struggle is often a metaphorical description and need not be viewed as overt combat, guns blazing. Tactics for reproductive success include a variety of non-martial activities such as earlier and more frequent mating or better cooperation with partners in raising offspring.) Natural selection is therefore a principle of local adaptation, not of general advance or progress.

    Dorothy, It's Really Oz
A pro-creationist decision in Kansas is more than a blow against Darwin
    By Stephen Jay Gould
The Kansas Board of Education voted 6 to 4 to remove evolution, and the Big Bang theory as well, from the state's science curriculum. In so doing, the board transported its jurisdiction to a never-never land where a Dorothy of the new millennium might exclaim, "They still call it Kansas, but I don't think we're in the real world anymore." The new standards do not forbid the teaching of evolution, but the subject will no longer be included in statewide tests for evaluating studentsa virtual guarantee, given the realities of education, that this central concept of biology will be diluted or eliminated, thus reducing courses to something like chemistry without the periodic table, or American history without Lincoln. The Kansas skirmish marks the latest episode of a long struggle by religious Fundamentalists and their allies to restrict or eliminate the teaching of evolution in public schoolsa misguided effort that our courts have quashed at each stage, and that saddens both scientists and most theologians. No scientific theory, including evolution, can pose any threat to religionfor these two great tools of human understanding operate in complementary (not contrary) fashion in their totally separate realms: science as an inquiry about the factual state of the natural world, religion as a search for spiritual meaning and ethical values.

    Gould, Stephen Jay (1941-2002)
Harvard paleontologist, well known for his prolific popular writings and his formulation with Niles Eldridge of the theory of punctuated equilibrium , who considered how evolutionary theory impacts on the likelihood and possible nature of extraterrestrial intelligence (see evolutionary theory and extraterrestrial life ). In his 1989 book Wonderful Life he argues against the repeatability of species and of humanoids in particular (see anthropomorphism ), pointing out the . . . staggeringly improbable series of events, sensible enough in retrospect and subject to rigorous explanation, but utterly unpredictable and quite unrepeatable. . . . Wind back the tape of life to the early days of the Burgess shale; let it play again from an identical starting point, and the chance becomes vanishingly small that anything like human intelligence would grace the replay. At the same time, he is quick to assert that while the contingency inherent in evolution suggests a lack of human-like beings elsewhere, it does not, as some evolutionists such as George Gaylord Simpson and Ernest Mayr have claimed, imply a lack of extraterrestrial intelligence in general:

Stephen Jay Gould, one of the world's best-known palaeontologists and science writers, has died at the age of 60. He died of cancer at his home in New York, according to his assistant Stephanie Schur. A Harvard professor since the age of 26, Gould was also a best-selling author known for his engaging and often witty style of science writing.
Science is not a heartless pursuit of objective information. It is a creative human activity, its geniuses acting more as artists than as information processors
Stephen Jay Gould He sought to make complex debates about geology, palaeontology and evolutionary biology accessible to the general public. Some of his best-known works are Ever Since Darwin, The Panda's Thumb and The Mismeasure Of Man. He also championed the teaching of evolutionary science in American schools, despite opposition from creationist lobby groups.

Profesor Stephen Jay Gould, who has died of cancer aged 60, was an unlikely figure to have been canonised in his lifetime by the US Congress, which named him as one of America's "living legends". A palaeontologist, he was based for most of his life at the museum of comparative zoology (MCZ) at Harvard, where, since 1982, he had been Alexander Agassiz professor of zoology. But he was best known to the public through his unbroken sequence of 300 monthly essays in Natural History magazine, which began in 1974 and ended only last year; they were republished in a seemingly unending stream of books, translated into dozens of languages and bought by their hundreds of thousands.
