For our user agree- ment, click here Evensong employs set of familiar themes Wednesday, April 28, 1999 By Elizabeth Adams Special writer, The Oregonian Evensong is the 11th novel of Gail Godwin, a critically acclaimed writer and three-time nominee for the National Book Award. Depicting the world of a Southern Episcopalian priest as she prepares for the new millennium, it is set during the weeks of Advent in the year 1999 and explores themes familiar to Godwin: love, faith, obligation and grace. But Evensong , a sequel to Father Melancholy's Daughter , departs from Godwin's previous novels in that its heroine, Margaret Bonner, has made the leap to self-definition. Bonner is not immune to the constrictions of her past. The novel's primary tension stems from her premature midlife crisis: a conflict between the self she has been given and the self that she creates for herself. It is no accident that Bonner has married Adrian, a man many years her senior who is both a minister and a Jungian analyst. Most of those who knew Margaret advised that her marriage to Adrian was a mistake, a re-enactment of her mother's poor judgment in choosing a depressed man many years her senior. But Margaret's mother, Ruth, had no concept of her own spiritual life. " 'Falling in love with Walter was like falling in love with God,' my mother had apparently told (her friend) Madelyn. . . . When my father toppled from his pedestal, so did poor God, and Ruth had felt trapped in a false life as a result."

Mar. 29, 1999 Millennium Fevers In her absorbing new novel, Gail Godwin tracks modern maladies into a mountain town BY PAUL GRAY Gail Godwin's 10th novel, Evensong (Ballantine; 405 pages; $25), is set in the very near future indeed, specifically the waning weeks of 1999. Millennial fever has reached even the idyllic and remote Smoky Mountain town of High Balsam, N.C. (winter pop. 1,000), where Margaret Bonner, 33, serves as rector of All Saints Episcopal Church. "Winter in the Great Smokies would shortly be upon us," Margaret says at the outset of her tale, "the winter that would see us into the next century and the new millennium. Other things were on their way to us as well, things we neither anticipated nor, in some cases, could... The complete article is 502 words long. If you would like to read the full article, you may:

Godwin, Gail The Good Husband
Genre Novel (468 pp.) Keywords Cancer Caregivers Death and Dying Family Relationships ... Individuality Summary Magda Danvers, the brilliant English professor and scholar of Blake, is dying of cancer, "the Great Uncouth . . . my final teacher." The novel tracks the course of her illness and her husband, Francis's (who is a former Roman Catholic seminarian) untiring care of her until the end. In addition, the deteriorating marriage of Alice (who has just suffered a miscarriage) and the novelist Hugo Henry is examined alongside of Magda's and Francis's as Alice befriends Magda and Francis throughout the final course of Magda's illness. Commentary The novel offers a rich perspective on the individual process of dying, and the myriad ways friends and family have of coping with it. Francis Lake is an exemplary caregiver, one that Magda comes to despise toward the end of her life. Alice Hugo, in her own pain, becomes a trusted friend to both Magda and Francis. The novel complicates stereotypes of caregiving, friendship, love, and dying.

Publishers Weekly once described Gail Godwin as a mix of "mysticism and clear-headed practicality," a fusion of divergent forces that has proven a rich one for the author, whose novels Evensong and The Good Husband explorations of mortality and faith that mine the spiritual side of their characters have earned her both popular and critical acclaim. "I spend a lot of time either in awe of or in pursuit of the unseen," Godwin says by phone from her home in Woodstock, New York. Indeed, her first nonfiction book Heart: A Personal Journey Through Its Myths and Meanings gives substance to the unseen, solidifying the essence of one of our most popular symbols: the heart. A synthesis, a survey, Godwin's new book tours history, religion, literature and art, examining the role of the heart in each of these contexts and bringing to mind the best of Diane Ackerman and Annie Dillard along the way. Exploring the accretion of meanings, the layers of significance humanity has projected onto an emblem that probably dates back to 10,000 B.C., when the heart as we know it that shapeliest of symbols, all lavish arch and flirtatious curve was first scrawled on a cave wall in Spain, the narrative is part history, part anatomy, part literary criticism, an in-depth examination of what lies behind the good, old-fashioned valentine.

I mean "began" in the old storytelling sense, for oftener than not what we call beginnings are fulfillments of things set in motion a long time ago. It was the Friday evening before the first Sunday in Advent, that season of spiritual expectation in the Church calendar: a clear, frosty evening at the end of November, with a bite to it. Winter in the Great Smokies would shortly be upon us, the winter that would see us into the next century and the new millennium. Gail Godwin

Summary
No other part of the human anatomy has permeated every aspect of life - religion, mythology, literature, art, music - like the heart. Words and expressions involving the heart have worked their way into everyday language without us giving them a second thought. What if we sought to consciously understand how the heart affects the human condition? This is exactly what Gail Godwin sets out to accomplish. Highly acclaimed as a novelist, Godwin demonstrates her love of language and ideas in this broad, sweeping overview of the heart through the ages. From pre-historic cave paintings through the Industrial Revolution, from ritual sacrifices to objects of worship, we come to know and understand the mysteries of the heart. Part One explores The Heart Through Time . We meet the key figures in the evolution of both civilization and organized religion, and learn that there has been some notion of the heart since the beginning of time. Buddha, Confucius, Lao-Tzu, Jesus of Nazareth, Muhammad - all share "heart-wisdom" in their teachings. We are able to explore subjects as disparate as Greek philosophy, origins of the Valentine, and the first stethoscope - all within the framework of a singular organ. In Part Two
