Like her previous two collections, this new book functions primarily through the use of a heightened dramatic voice and a fierce inward-looking gaze. Yet Glück's detachment, as manifested by her art, allows her the kind of coldly beautiful insight and wry irony that no American poet has matched since the publication of her own The Wild Iris in 1992. Here again, she stretches the range of her voice to include ecstatic utterances, variations on myths, fragmented cross-examinations and lyrical meditations on the nature of the divine. A glutton for abstraction, Glück tempers her penchant for the incorporeal noun with searing metaphysical images and a seemingly straightforward approach to grammar and syntax. Like Persephone, the speakers of these poems emerge from silence into the eternal light of spring, riding an arc of grief that carries them upward.

... About the author
The Wild Iris At the end of my suffering
there was a door. Hear me out: that which you call death
I remember. Overhead, noises, branches of the pine shifting.
Then nothing. The weak sun flickered over the dry surface. It is terrible to survive as consciousness buried in the dark earth. Then it was over: that which you fear, being a soul and unable to speak, ending abruptly, the stiff earth bending a little. And what I took to be birds darting in low shrubs. You who do not remember passage from the other world I tell you I could speak again: whatever returns from oblivion returns to find a voice: from the center of my life came a great fountain, deep blue shadows on azure seawater.

Her roles included roles such as Siebel, Ortrud, Laura, Maddalena, Brangäne, Azucena, Venus, Dalila, Fidès, Waltraute, Ulrica, Fricka, Erda, Dame Quickly, Marina, Suzuki, Lola, Orfeo, the Witch in Humperdinck’s Königskinder and many leading roles in now forgotten operas. Nelly Melba called her the world’s most beautiful voice! It is said that Louise was a very expressive artist and a phantastic actress. As Azucena (photo by Herman Mishkin) The singer was never satisfied with her own recordings. In my opininion, they are slightly disappointing. She had undoubtedly an impressive and very beautiful voice, but her singing is rather “uninspired”. She is not very good in florid work either. Her early recordings are certainly the best when she was in her prime. There are some fine ensemble recordings. In her favorite role as Amneris she sings opposite Enrico Caruso and the great

They were for Christmas, and they kept you warm
while she married over and over, taking you

when all those years she stored her widowed heart

    Two Poems
    by Louise Gluck
    By Robert Hass

    August 8, 1999
F or the lucky, born into a geography not visited by war or political terror, the events in life that leave the soul scarred and disoriented are death and divorce. Divorce is a kind of death. Even for people who are glad to get out of relationships, the props of a life have to be remade, families, habits, houses, even towns. And it can leave a life stripped bare. I think about Elizabeth Bishop's poem "One Art," which begins "The art of losing isn't hard to master" and goes on to do a wry inventory: I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster, some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent. I miss them, but it wasn't a disaster. It's not surprising that it is a subject for poetry, but it is surprising how little serious and sustained examination of the subject there has been in our poetry, given how common and how devastating the experience can be. After great pain, a formal feeling comes The Nerves sit ceremonious, like Tombs Here are a couple of the poems: The Garment My soul dried up.
