An Interview with William Gaddis By John Kuehl and Steven Moore
Q: There seems to be a noticeable undercurrent of autobiography in your fiction. Both Willie in "The Recognitions" and especially Thomas Eigen in "J R" bear more than a passing resemblance to their author. Yet you are also one of the most reticent of writers, avoiding publicity of any kind. What are your views on the place of autobiography in artistic creation and to what extent is Thomas Eigen a portrait of the artist? Q: You said that you enjoy writing, but you have never discussed your writing habits. Do you keep a journal or notebooks? Do you have preferences as to when and where you work, etc? WG: Have I said I enjoy writing? Some high moment and I probably did, but it's nearer what Pascal, was it he? as I have it at second hand, said about no man differing more from another than he does from himself at another time. That incidentally may better explain a phenomenon like "The Brothers Karamazov." It certainly helps to explain my distaste for interviews, though this one may serve to set the record straight on a few points. Q: It's been said "The Recognitions" was edited down to its present size from a much longer manuscript. Is it true that you fundamentally agreed with the cuts suggested by your editors at Harcourt, Brace and World? How did the abandoned material differ from that in the final version? Have you come to regret any of the deletions? Did "J R" go through a similar process of editing? What part do revisions play in your compositional method?

CONJUNCTIONS: A Web Exclusive Remembering Mr. Gaddis

A MEMORIAL TRIBUTE was held May 6th for the late William Gaddis, the esteemed novelist who died last December. The course of my life was irrevocably changed by my discovery of his work in 1975, and after nearly 25 years of writing and thinking about his titanic novels, I felt compelled to attend this tribute to the man who, I am now convinced, is the greatest American novelist of the twentieth century.
The tribute was held in the august auditorium of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City, into which Gaddis was inducted in 1984. As it happens, the last time I had seen Gaddis was in the same building five years earlier, an awards ceremony where Gaddis and the other members of the Academy sat on the stage (like the faculty at a graduation), facing us like totems guarding the gates of American literature.
Gracing the stage this time was a smaller but well-chosen group: Sarah Gaddis, his daughter, began the event on an elegiac note, almost breaking down in tears as she confessed how difficult it was to adjust to the absence created by her father's death. (She once wrote an autobiographical novel, Swallow Hard , largely about her relationship to him.) She was followed by gentleman-novelist Louis Auchincloss, who gave an overview of Gaddis's achievement (in a sumptuous Anglo-American accent) and paid tribute to his vast erudition. Auchincloss is known for his legal novels, but he admitted Gaddis's knowledge of the law far exceeded his.

BOYCOTT TABA
By Alfred Kazin Alison Lurie Andrew Hacker Anthony Hecht ... William Styron
To the Editors As former winners and judges of the National Book Awards, we should like to comment on the recent and ominous announcement by the Association of American Publishers of their revised book award program, henceforth to be known as The American Book Awards and administered by a new organization called The Academy of The American Book Awards (TABA). Apart from the increase in the number of categories, which seems harmless in principle, the main purpose of the change appears to be to transfer decision-making from those who write books to those who sell and buy them. In the past, the National Book Awards were made by a jury of the winners' peers: novelists selected the winning novel, poets the volume of poems, historians the work of history, and so on. Over the years, this policy often resulted in the choice of books which had not been ballyhooed by large publishers and were not necessarily well known; the 1978 fiction and history winners, Tim O'Brien's Going After Cacciato (Delacorte Press) and Richard Beale Davis' Intellectual Life in the Colonial South , 1585-1760 (University of Tennessee Press) are only two of many examples. The selection of such titles over those with mammoth advertising budgets, paperback campaigns, and film sales has been extremely irritating to some people in the book business. At this year's award festivities, the judges were several times approached by publishers and booksellers who expressed surprise and disgust at their neglect of various "more important" best-sellers.

Beyond the Bestsellers, Winter 1995
Angle, Barbara THOSE THAT MATTERED
This grim, gripping first novel is written from experienceAngle worked the West Virginia coal mines, and, in fact, lost the use of an arm there. The voice of her narrator, Portia Crowe, who returns to such roots after finding college largely irrelevant, rings true. American Realism survives in this reality-check of a book.
Bradfield, Scott WHAT'S WRONG WITH AMERICA
Talk about a life-change: after 69-year-old Emma O'Hallahan shotguns her miserable husband Marvin, she discovers thought, sensation, sex (with the banker Mr. Sullivan, who seems also to have offed his spouse). This sardonic comic novel takes fire at most of America's weirdnesses as embodied in California. Plus: guest appearance by Mike Douglas.
For another "Beyond" fable from Bradfield, see: Animal Planet
Danvers, Dennis TIME AND TIME AGAIN
This fatalistic romance novel has more device (e. g. a novel-within-a-novel, synchronicity problems) than substance. But then, do people really want substance (witness Bridges of Madison County , a "Beyond" entry before it became a summa-cum-bestseller) in romance fiction? Worth a shot for those who might find "literary romance" appealing.

REMEMBERING WILLIAM GADDIS, Neglected Master The best way to remember this uncompromising, darkly funny giant of American letters is to read him. BY CARTER SCHOLZ W illiam Gaddis was esteemed by his peers like few other contemporary novelists, but his audience never matched his reputation. He wrote just four novels, but they are of such density, variety and accomplishment as to dwarf lengthier bibliographies. Each is an artifice of uncommon structural and moral integrity. Gaddis, winner of the National Book Award in 1976 and again in 1994 and the recipient of a MacArthur fellowship in 1982, died Wednesday at his home in East Hampton, N.Y. He was 75. Deeply concerned with the values by which people live, Gaddis filled his work with fierce anger and bitter humor at how people fail themselves and others, at all forms of laziness and greed and stupidity. His books overflow with bleak sorrow, outrage and a desperate laughter that provides the only refuge in a world where most people spend their best efforts on tasks not worth doing.

You'll find essays consisting of strung-together quotes that you have to read carefully, twice, before you conclude that no argument (or, indeed, logic) is hidden in the string. Winter 2002/2003 Agape Agape William Gaddis Viking ($23.95) by Vincent Czyz he first book William Gaddis published, at the age of 32, was his 956-page masterpiece The Recognitions . Unfortunately, reviewers weren't quite ready for a multi-layered work of genius from an author making his literary debut and, one after another, they wrote reviews that were generally incompetent, cribbing both from each other and from the book's flap copy. In fact, the critical ineptitude that surrounded The Recognitions was so flagrant, it inspired a book of its own, Jack Green's riotously incisive Fire the Bastards! The commercial failure of The Recognitions was largely responsible for the fact that nothing was heard from Gaddis for a full two decades when he reemerged with the publication of JR , for which he won the National Book Award. He took another National Book Award with his fourth book, A Frolic of his Own . Now, four years after Gaddis's death, Viking has released Agape Agape "No but you see I've got to explain all this because I don't, we don't know how much time there is left ..." So begins this slender volume of 96 pages (with a 13-page afterword). Although to all appearances complete, there is a sense of urgency in the work all the more compelling for its real-life parallel: Gaddis knew, while writing it, that it was to be the final fiction he would bequeath to the world. Agape Agape is not so much a novel or even a novella as it is a dramatic monologue in which many of the concerns first expounded in

    CARPENTER'S GOTHIC
by William Gaddis INTRODUCTION Early in Carpenter's Gothic, the third of William Gaddis's five novels, Paul Booth says to his wife, Liz, "trying to put things together, build something like your father did we both know that's what it's about" (p. 18). For Paul, "trying to put things together" means somehow procuring money from an outlandish and absurdly complicated scheme involving everything from a thoroughly corrupt evangelist to mineral rights in Africa. "Trying to put things together" is also a fair description of Gaddis's method of composition and the task he presents to readers. Carpenter's Gothic consists primarily of the unattributed speech of its characters, who are frequently interrupted not only by one another, but also by the background noise of daily life television, radio, ringing telephones, and the printed word that constantly inundates them in the form of junk mail, newspapers, magazines, and books. The effect is one of unfiltered sound; only occasionally does the third-person narrative voice step in to situate readers in time and place. Interpretation becomes not only a matter of choosing among possible meanings; readers must first sift through what often seems a random onslaught of words. Carpenter's Gothic Not only does Paul never hear her, but he also repeatedly chastises Liz for not listening to him. McCandless, perhaps the novel's most perplexing character, arrives to fill the void created by Paul's complete self-absorption. Sometimes he seems to be a parody of the seductive, mysterious stranger with a murky past. But he nevertheless engages Liz's mind and imagination. It becomes difficult to decide whether McCandless is a viable but fleeting alternative to the world Paul imposes on Liz or a sinister figure who preys on a woman feeling trapped. Mechanically assuming the role of the distant landlord on the unexpected appearance of Liz's brother Billy, McCandless says to Liz, "afraid I disturbed you Mrs. Booth" (p. 196). The phrase continues to echo in her head after McCandless leaves, the verb taking on a more ominous tone than McCandless might have intended.
