A selection of quotes.

Anatomy of Criticism
by
Frye, Northrop. 1957. 'The romance is nearest of all literary forms to the wish fulfilment dream, and for that reason it has socially a curiously paradoxical role' (186).
'The essential element of plot in romance is adventure, which means that romance in naturally a sequential and processional form' (186).
'The complete form of the romance is clearly the successful quest, and such a completed form has three main stages: the stage of the perilous journey and the preliminary minor adventures; the crucial struggle, usually some kind of battle in which either the hero of his foe, or both, must die; and the exaltation of the hero' (187).
'A quest involving conflict assumes two main characters, a protagonist or hero, and an antagonist or enemy' (187).
'We have distinguished myth from romance by the hero's power of action: in the myth proper he is divine, in the romance proper he is human' (188).
'The central form of quest-romance is the dragon-killing theme exemplified in the stories of St. George and Perseus' (189)
'In the Bible we have a sea-monster usually named leviathan, who is described as the enemy of the Messiah, and whom the Messiah is destined to kill in the ''day of the Lord''' (189).

Frye, Northrop
Northrop Frye (1912-91) was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, and received his early education in Moncton, New Brunswick. He studied English and philosophy at Victoria College, University of Toronto, and then, after studying theology, was ordained a minister in the United Church of Canada in 1936. After a short period of pastoral work in Saskatchewan, he proceeded on scholarship to Merton College, Oxford, to study English. He returned to Canada in 1939 and was appointed to the Department of English in Victoria College, where he subsequently served as chair, then as principal, and finally in 1978 as chancellor of Victoria University. In 1967 he became the first University Professor of the University of Toronto, a position he held until his death.
As a young professor, Frye was influenced by the structures in the works of Sir James Frazer and Oswald Spengler, though he was repelled by many of their concepts. He was also working on a campus where many colleagues were engaged in constructing encyclopedic, interdisciplinary studies- Charles N. Cochrane and Eric Havelock in classics, Harold Innis in political economy, and Marshall McLuhan in English. When Frye began to publish, particularly in

Frye discusses ideas on the evolution from Old to New Comedy, and therein touches upon a number of elements of the New Comedy, among them the basic plot and movement towards resolution. Of interest is his relation of the individual and the societal, in the resolution of the comic drama: "The essential comic resolution," Frye states, ". . . is an individual release which is also a social reconciliation" (167). His comments on the structural relation of the comedy and the tragedy are particularly useful: "Comedy," he notes, "grows out of the [tragic] ritual, for in the ritual the tragic story has a comic sequel" (168).
