A Diary, 1948-1957
Ford's diary is more fun than philosophical. When he isn't poo=pooing with the likes of Edith Sitwell, Truman Capote, and Cecil Beaton, Ford is trying to screw sailors, draft plays, out-wit his last witty remark, and then screw goatherds in Italy.
Oh, if only all the world could be so fast and fabulous. "V Magazine" May/June 2001~Poet Charles Henri Ford…is no garden-variety diatist, not by a long shot. "Flaunt, June 2001"

A collection of Barnes' short stories, including Behind the Heart , one in which the author examines her feelings about her relationship with Charles Henri Ford. An interpretation of this story is included in Sleep in a Nest of Flames . The book contains an introduction by Phillip Herring. Bowles, Paul In Touch: The Letters of Paul Bowles New York: Farrar, Strauss and Giroux, 1994. With a foreword by the editor Jeffrey Miller, this is a sampling of Bowles' voluminous correspondence, including many letters to Charles Henri Ford. Calloway, Stephen Baroque Baroque, The Culture of Excess London: Phaidon Press Limited, 1994. Calloway takes the decades of the twentieth century and explores how a baroque sensibility has manifested itself in each one. Film, visual art, fashion and interior design are used to show how this style has persisted in this age of orthodox severity. Surrealism and Neo-Romanticism are reflected in the work of Ford's intimates Pavel Tchelitchew and Cecil Beaton. The extravagance of Ford's friends the Sitwells is examined as being emblematic of this imaginative view of culture. Duncan, Michael

Sleep in a Nest of Flames home page table of contents Photography as Witness of His Times Charles Henri Ford photographing In addition to his various other careers, Ford has produced a body of photographic work that reflect changing attitudes toward photography during his lifetime. His work as a photographer reveals at times a taste for the vernacular and at other times a surrealist way of seeing the world, however, it always reflects the time in which it was made and offers a personal interpretation of those times. Whenever possible, in Sleep in a Nest of Flames , we have used Ford's photographs. Genre photographs reveal the spirit of 1930's and 1940's New York, while his surrealist work reflects a life spent pushing the edge. A section of Ford's photographs is included as he shows an album of them to Ned Rorem. Sung behind this is Paul Bowles song from the 1940's, "Night Without Sleep" which sets the text of the Ford poem against Bowles' lyrical music. The American surrealist, Charles Henri Ford, was both an influential writer and an editor. In 1933 he published The Young and the Evil, a novel he wrote with Parker Tyler. He is better known, however, for his collections of surrealist poetry, including The Garden of Disorder (1939) and The Overturned Lake (1941), and for editing the surrealist magazines, Blues and View. He published Blues from 1929-30 while he was still a teenager. View ran from 1940-47 and contained works of young artists and poets like Joseph Cornell, Randall Jarrell, and Allen Ginsberg.
Ford was born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, on February 10, 1913 to Charles Lloyd and Gertrude Cato Ford. He attended the Christian Brothers College Grammar School in Memphis, Tennessee, where he lived with his mother and sister Ruth. In 1922 he was sent away to the Webb School in Bellbuckle, Tennessee, and later attended the Morgan School in St. Petersburg, Tennessee. In 1929, he went to St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas, for at least one semester.
Later in 1929, Ford lived in both Columbus, Mississippi, and New York City, while he edited Blues. In 1930 he moved to Paris, where he lived for four years. During this period he developed friendships with several literary figures, among whom were Gertrude Stein and Djuna Barnes. After traveling through Europe and North Africa, Ford returned to New York in October, 1934.

Charles Henri Ford, a poet, editor, novelist, artist and legendary cultural catalyst whose career spanned much of 20th-century modernism, died on Friday in Manhattan. He was 94 and lived in Manhattan and had a house in Katmandu.
Mr. Ford, who also had homes in Paris and on Crete for many years, was peripatetic, precocious, charismatic, multitalented and very productive. He said he was inspired by the multimedia career of Jean Cocteau and by Cocteau's description of himself as a poet in everything he does.
Mr. Ford was considered America's first Surrealist poet and, by some, a precursor of the New York School. His first poem appeared in The New Yorker while he was still a teenager; he eventually published 16 books of poetry. But he was also a co-writer, with his lifelong friend the writer and film critic Parker Tyler, of "The Young and Evil" (Paris, 1933), which many consider to be the first gay novel. The book, based on the author's adventures in Greenwich Village bohemia, was banned in the United States until the 1960's.
His most recent book is "Water From a Bucket; A Diary, 1948-1957" (Turtle Point Press, 2001), with an introduction by the writer Lynne Tillman. Mr. Ford also made paintings, drawing, collages and especially photographs, which he starting taking in the 1930's and first exhibited in Paris in 1954, as well as a single film, "Johnny Minotaur," whose premiere was in 1973. His photographs were shown most recently at the Leslie Tonkonow Gallery in Chelsea in 1997. In 1999 the Ubu Gallery in Manhattan organized a revelatory exhibition of his so-called Prose Poems from the mid-1960's — large, colorful word-strewn collages that combined elements of Concrete poetry and Pop Art and presaged image-text artists like Barbara Kruger.

Sleep in a Nest of Flames
Synopsis:
A chronicle of the life of American artist Charles Henri Ford, whose influence has spanned the last 70 years. Born and raised in the South, Ford put his stamp on the world of literature when he founded "Blues", a literary magazine which published works by emerging writers. One such writer, Parker Tyler, prompted Charles to join him in the lap of counterculture, Greenwich Village. In 1932, they co-authored the semi-autobiographical novel "The Young and the Evil". Radical for its non-judgmental view of gay life, the book was banned in the US. Ford was as connected to the Surrealists of the 40s as he was to the Pop artists of the 60s. Through the use of dramatizations and interviews with Ford and his contemporaries, including Allen Ginsberg, Paul Bowles and Dorothea Tanning, a portrait emerges of one of America's most influential and enduring artists.

IN PRINT Re: Michael Duncan on Charles Henri Ford by James Dowell, 01.19.03 04:43 am Hi Michael, Charles always liked publicity so much; I was glad to see you threw a few pixels his way. I was surprised you remember bitchiness as one of his chief legacies. To me, under his often petty and prideful surface, was the spirit of a real poet. I'm sure he was a victim of his good looks in youth, but I also am aware that he could delight in at least half of the things experience washed up on his shore. I've been in Texas for months dealing with family matters; should be back in NYC in March to try and wrap up the Rorem filming. Best regards, Jim Reply Overview

CHARLES HENRI FORD
A poet I have been reading for over 50 years. This is Charles in Central Park, New York City, in the spring of 1995. He must be nearly 82.
One of the few surrealists from Midnight, Mississippi. (Well, Brookhaven, Mississippi, if you insist.) Luckily, I am interested both in surrealists and in Mississippi small towns with funny names. Hot Coffee, Mississippi, is my favorite, but Notapater, Bobo, Soso, Homochitto, Money, and Arm are not to be ignored.
Charles Henri has a comfortable little apartment under the roof of the Dakota Apartments on the Upper West Side in Manhattan. We stop in now and again for tea with him and his devoted friend from Katmandu, Indra Tamang. The talk turns from Gertie Stein and Pavel Tchelitchew to the latest gorilla-hash about the artistes on Long Island. His accent is still mud-deep Mississsippi and he is a real delight.
How little he knows or worries about our Extremely Dark Continent. Has he ever even been to Newark? I hope not. People in Newark think Tchelitchew is a new expensive drug, not yet available on the street.

Charles Henri Ford's Splendid Life By David Noh Charles Henri Ford, who died last summer at 93, is being celebrated in an exhibit at the Mitchell Algus gallery, and a new film, "Sleep in a Nest of Flames," by James Dowell and John Kolomvakis. Ford was a true Renaissance man — poet, artist, editor, filmmaker and inspiration to some of the greatest artists of the 20th century. In 1932, he and Parker Tyler wrote the first gay-themed novel, "The Young and Evil," a shocker set in Greenwich Village which is still in publication. Today, the book still holds up as a unflinchingly honest, poetic work with similarities to Djuna Barnes' "Nightwood." Ford knew Barnes well, as, indeed he seemed to know everyone, from William Burroughs to Andy Warhol. I was lucky to know him, and visited him at his art-filled aerie in the Dakota, as well as summer digs in his beloved Montauk. We first met at a screening of his Cretan film, "Johnny Minotaur," at the Mudd Club, and Charles, ever the flirt, said, "There is nothing more beautiful than a smiling Asian face." He was a superb raconteur and mimic with incredible recall of events like the time he brought the poet W.H. Auden to meet Salvador Dali at a party. Dali's first, weirdly high-pitched words to this esteemed man of letters were, "Do you spik Inglish?!"
