His amendment would specifically exclude municipal solid waste (MSW), which is a significant source of air emissions and toxic wastes containing dioxin, mercury, and lead when incinerated, from qualifying as renewable energy. A motion to table the Fitzgerald amendment passed 50-46 on April 24,2002. NO was the pro-environmental vote.

Simmons, wheelsman onboard the Fitz, was born in Ashland, Wisconsin, where he married Florence Higgins in 1937. They had three children; one son who died at birth, and two daughters, Patricia and Mary. The journey that started on November 9, 1975 was going to be his last trip before his retirement from sailing on the Great Lakes. Capt. McSorley asked him to make this one last trip with him, and he agreed out of great respect for the man and the friendship they had shared for over thirty years. He was a jokester and a story teller; he loved telling us (nieces, nephews, children) stories about the boat and his many voyages aboard her. He was the senior wheelsman and truly loved sailing. His children spent a lot of time with him on board the Fitz when he was docked in Duluth, Minnesota, and his daughter and son-in-law often picked him up and brought him home on leave. John was also quite a pool player. He graduated from Depadua High School and played basketball well. He left money in his will for this very same school's athletic department. (The school now being called St. Agnes Catholic School at the time of his passing.)

At the age of 53, President Dwight D. Eisenhower selected Benson as the Secretary of Agriculture. While in this position he urged for flexible price supports for agriculture products. Benson was known as a man of principle. He appeared on the covers of Time magazine and Saturday Evening Post . Benson served eight years as Secretary of Agriculture. R eva Beck Bosone S he started her career as a high school teacher then later became one of the first female lawyers. Bosone became a member in the House of Representatives in 1932; four years later she was elected as the first women judge. She was later elected to the United States Congress where she served two terms. Bosone became the judicial officer of the Post Office (1960) where she was the highest ranking woman in that department. Through her years of service, Bosone wanted to raise the image of women in politics and the public office.
