    Chapter One
Stratford, Ontario, Thursday, June 25, 1998 Swirling people. Lights. Music. Enough to make a person dizzy. This was only the beginning. Then you had to get through the doors, hand over your tickets to someone you could barely see in the crush and, after that, find your seat. Opening night — and nothing in the world to equal it. The audience radiant with expectation-the actors sick with apprehension. Everyone — as the saying goes — was there — all the stars, all the rich, all the Festival Board and staff — the artistic directorhis assistant — the designer, the composer, the lighting and costume designers, the mass of visiting actors, writers, directors . . . And the critics, all of whom were attempting — as always, without success — to maintain anonymity. Who -me? They were somewhat overshadowed by the simultaneous presence of the Governor General and the multiple rumors of visiting actors Meryl Streep, Anthony Hopkins, Vanessa Redgrave, Emma Thompson and Jude Law. (These rumors seldom proved to be correct, but on occasion, some were true.) Nonetheless, the critics meticulously found their way to their aisle seats and stood waiting one by one, still feigning absence, until the rest of their rows had filled.

    SPADEWORK.
    By Timothy Findley.
HarperCollins, $23.95. TIMOTHY Findley is a best-selling Canadian author. His works have earned national literary prizes, including several Canadian Authors Association Awards and the prestigious Governor General's Award for Fiction. His most recent novel, Spadework , may win Findley fans south of the border, too. Set in Stratford, Ontario, where Findley lives, the novel traces nearly a year in the life of a family, the Kincaids. Findley spins an engrossing tale, gradually uncovering tensions and domestic traumas beneath the family's apparent domestic tranquility. A prologue, set on opening night at the Stratford theater festival, introduces us to what appears to be a perfect family. Griffin Kincaid, a talented and handsome actor, performs in Shakespeare's

I don't talk about it. Nothing is ever plotted along the lines of any given theory because that would kill the writing. Then you're writing for another reason. And you have to force your storyline and force your characters into a mold. And why do that? You've killed half the impetus of what writing is about. Which is about exploring. Exploration. You're exploring the people you write and they develop under your hand and become whole." The first time I interviewed Timothy Findley was in 1995 while he was promoting his splendid novel, The Piano Man's Daughter . Findley took the opportunity to introduce me to a lovely white Zinfandel. A Californian. As crisp as the late summer day was hot and so lovely on the palate, it melted: if a wine can be said to melt.
At our most recent meeting, Findley introduced me to another lovely wine. We were in the lounge of the Hotel Vancouver (the last bastion of civilized smoking in that city. And Findley did rather a lot of that.) and he pressed a glass of an astonishing Australian red on me from his own decanter. "Wolf Blass," he intoned as only Findley can intone. "Don't forget to ask for 'Yellow Label'."

Buy it online When he passed away on June 21, 2002, Timothy Findley left behind a significant body of work, legions of dedicated fans and enough awards and professional accolades for two well-spent lifetimes. One of Canada's best-loved authors, Findley was highly regarded internationally in both the literary world and that of the theater, for which he had a special love. A mere summation of Findley's accomplishments impressive though they might be is dry and meaningless compared with the man himself. Better, I think, to sketch him briefly for you here a quick rendering from life and follow with our final interview with him, made on his last book tour for his fabulous though starkly underrated (even by Findley himself) novel, Spadework. I first met Timothy Findley in 1995, on tour for The Piano Man's Daughter a book that would prove to be one of his most important and that was nominated for a Giller award and made into a film that Findley loathed. On that and subsequent book tours for He Went Away

Reviewed in University of Toronto Quarterly by DAVID INGHAM
Carol Roberts's Timothy Findley is a recent and worthy addition to ECW's Canadian Biography series. Like other works in the series, it sheds light on the literary output of its central figure via an examination of the details of that figure's life, and its relative avoidance of the considerable body of scholarly writing on Findley is consistent with its being aimed primarily at an undergraduate audience. This accessibility, however, does not preclude its usefulness to serious scholars: those who believe (as I do) that an author's life can often be relevant to the critical examination of his or her work will find the book a worthwhile complement to scholarly opinion. Nor is Roberts unaware of that scholarship: her Timothy Findley: An Annotated Bibliography, with Lynne Macdonald, remains an indispensable tool.
Drawing on a wide variety of sources both critical and personal (Findley and his companion, William Whitehead, were both characteristically generous), Roberts not only produces a biography notable for its intimacy and vitality; she also recounts stories about Findley that illuminate stories by Findley. Skilfully combining details of his experience that find their way into his fiction (such as the maids with whom he spent so much time as a child, and who emerge as pivotal figures in many of the stories) with Findley's own view of his creative process, she also provides a digest of scholarly response to Findley's work and adds her own cogent and sound readings of the larger concerns of Findley's major works.

He had lengthy periods in hospital or convalescing at home and he used the time in reading. He was aware of his homosexuality early in his adolescence. At the age of 16 he left school hoping to become a ballet dancer, but he was thwarted by a bad back and turned to acting in 1948. In 1953 he acted in the inaugural season of the Shakespearean festival at Stratford, Ontario. During this time he made friends with Tyrone Guthrie and Alec Guinness and as a result he moved to London and attended the Central School of Speech and Drama. Our Own Pilgrim Timothy Findley has come to be the icon of what is excellent in Canadian Literature, and his latest novel will surely maintain, if not further, his status along. Personally, I can say I've never met a Findley I didn't thoroughly enjoy, and, well, I've read them all. His latest journey takes us overseas with a man who cannot die, and one who finds himself in the company of greatness along the way, in meetings with Leonardo DaVinci C.G. Jung Oscar Wilde and others. Interested?
For more information on Findley, click here . To buy Pilgrim click here I have lived many times, Dr. Jung. Who knows, as Leda I might have been the mother of Helen or as Anne, the mother of Mary. I was Orion once, who lost his sight and regained it. I was also a cripple shepherd in thrall of Saint Teresa of Avila; an Irish stable boy and a maker of stained glass at Chartres. I stood on the ramparts of Troy and witnessed the death of Achilles. I saw the first performance of Hamlet and the last performance of Molière, the actor. I was a friend to Oscar Wilde and an enemy to Leonardo... I am both male and female, I am ageless, and I have no access to death.
