What You See
Rachael Norton surveyed herself in the full-length mirror, satisfied. The pale lemon silk jacket coordinated perfectly with the knee-length lemon silk skirt. Shoulder pads lent an aura of grace, her choice of a smoky tan leather belt finalizing the ensemble, perfectly complementing the lemon leather pumps she'd found at Dillard's. Expensive, but worth it. The shoes had prompted the purchase of the suit, the net effect of both combining to produce a rush of well-being rivaling the euphoric singing in the shower on the GNC commercial for SAM-e, alleged natural wonder drug and mood elevator. Rachael Norton did not need SAM-e. All she needed was reflected in the mirror in lemon yellow, perfectly accessorized glory. She looked as she lived to look: Professional. Poised. Completely in control. Dragging a green plastic brush through her shoulder length, ash blonde hair, dutifully lightened every five weeks at Antoine's, she secured a tight twist with an imitation tortoise comb just above the nape of her neck, slipping diamond studs into her earlobes. Mick wouldn't notice the earrings or their expense. The Zales statement rested in her purse, sandwiched between Lord and Taylor's and Nordstrom's. She carried debt on her clothes and jewelry, but they were worth it. A little anxiety as minimum payments due climbed upward was worth looking as she did and feeling as she felt, a woman who owned the earth. Success was in the details. Flub those up, she'd learned, and go nowhere. "If I'm not dressed right" she'd confided in her journal, "I'm not right. It's an insight for success."

Rowan Oak
Photo by John B. Padgett The Front Portico and brick terracing of Rowan Oak. Contents In 1930 William Faulkner purchased what was then known as "The Bailey Place," a large primitive Greek Revival house that pre-dated the Civil War, standing on four acres of cedars and hardwood. He was fascinated with its history, knowing that it had been built by a Colonel Sheegog from Tennessee who settled in Oxford when it was a tiny frontier settlement of the 1840's. Faulkner renamed it "Rowan Oak." He optioned the surrounding acreage and settled in with his wife Estelle and her two children from a previous marriage, Malcolm and Victoria. Within a few years his own daughter Jill was born, and Rowan Oak was the family home of the Faulkners until 1962, the year of Faulkner's death. In 1972, Jill Faulkner Summers sold the house to the University of Mississippi so it could become a place for people from all over the world to learn about her father's work. Lilies behind the house.

35. BEVERLY CONFESSION REJECTED: COURT ISSUES  ALARMING RULING AGAINST MUMIA
Videotape and text of Arnold Beverly's confession that he killed Officer Daniel faulkner as part of a mob hit assisted by Philadelphia police. PDF text of Federal District Judge william Yohn's ruling that the confession was inadmissable due to the statute of limitations expiration.
http://www.iacenter.org/maj_beverly.htm
BEVERLY CONFESSION REJECTED: COURT ISSUES  ALARMING RULING AGAINST MUMIA By Monica Moorehead On July 19, Federal District Judge William Yohn issued a 13- page ruling in which he turned down a petition filed by the  new legal counsel representing African American political  prisoner and journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal. In essence, Yohn  refused to accept the confession of Arnold Beverly as an  addition to a writ of habeas corpus filed originally in this  particular court on Oct. 15, 1999. The federal district court is the only high court that could  automatically grant Abu-Jamal the right to an evidentiary  hearing. He has requested such a hearing, at which he could  present new evidence in his case, based on 29 violations of  the U.S. Constitution carried out during his original sham  trial. These 29 violations were outlined in the original  writ of habeas corpus. An evidentiary hearing would allow all suppressed evidence  to finally be heard. But this negative ruling by Yohn makes  it less likely that the evidentiary hearing will ever  happen. Arnold Beverly signed an affidavit stating that he was a hit  man who had been hired and paid by the mob to kill a white  policeman, Daniel Faulkner, on Dec. 9, 1981, in  Philadelphia. Abu-Jamal was accused and subsequently  convicted of that killing. He has been languishing on death  row since July 3, 1982, and could face execution once his  federal appeals have been exhausted. Two death warrants have  been signed by the Pennsylvania governor and then withdrawn  under mass pressure during Abu-Jamal's state appeals.

36. William Faulkner - Biography
william faulkner – Biography. william faulkner (18971962), who camefrom an old southern family, grew up in Oxford, Mississippi.
http://www.nobel.se/literature/laureates/1949/faulkner-bio.html
William Faulkner (1897-1962), who came from an old southern family, grew up in Oxford, Mississippi. He joined the Canadian , and later the British, Royal Air Force during the First World War, studied for a while at the University of Mississippi , and temporarily worked for a New York bookstore and a New Orleans newspaper. Except for some trips to Europe and Asia, and a few brief stays in Hollywood as a scriptwriter, he worked on his novels and short stories on a farm in Oxford.
In an attempt to create a saga of his own, Faulkner has invented a host of characters typical of the historical growth and subsequent decadence of the South. The human drama in Faulkner's novels is then built on the model of the actual, historical drama extending over almost a century and a half Each story and each novel contributes to the construction of a whole, which is the imaginary Yoknapatawpha County and its inhabitants. Their theme is the decay of the old South, as represented by the Sartoris and Compson families, and the emergence of ruthless and brash newcomers, the Snopeses. Theme and technique - the distortion of time through the use of the inner monologue are fused particularly successfully in The Sound and the Fury (1929), the downfall of the Compson family seen through the minds of several characters. The novel

37. Happy Birthday, Eudora
Eudora Welty, the legendary and intensely private American short story writer, turned 90 Tuesday. Her finely crafted evocations of the South have earned her a place in the literary pantheon alongside her hero, fellow Mississippian william faulkner. Although her life has been largely a reflective one, Welty has produced a body of work unflinching and unerring in its innate understanding of the human condition. Her novel, The Optimist's Daughter published in 1973, won the Pulitzer Prize. And while Welty is definitely an oak of an earlier generation, she has not been forgotten by the current one. Even an email program, Eudora, is named for her. Wired News

Selected Resources on William Faulkner William Cuthbert Faulkner is renowned as one of the greatest novelists of the twentieth century. Born in New Albany, Mississippi, on September 25,1897, he spent most of his life in Mississippi and built many of his short stories and novels around his observations and experiences of life in the South. Faulkner's mythical Yoknapatawpha County serves as the locale for many of his stories and is so well known both in print and in motion pictures as to deserve a real place on the map. Myth or not, it will always survive on the literary map of the United States because of Faulkner's technical brilliance and gift for storytelling. After reading Faulkner and experiencing the rush of life so vividly depicted in his stories and in his novels, a visitor to Yoknapatawpha might agree with Lena's assessment of her experiences in Faulkner's A Light in August My, my. A body does get around. Here we ain't been coming from Alabama but two months, and now it's already Tennessee.
