LA JUNGLE NUE Par Philip Jose Farmer Ames sensibles s'abstenir !!! Ce roman est bien représentatif de la collection Titres SF (surtout au début de la collection) avec une formule qui fait maintenant les beaux jours de certaines chaines de télévision : du cul, du cul, du cul ! Le vocabulaire employé et les scènes décrites sont vraiment crus. Mais rendons à César ce qui est à César ; Philip Jose Farmer fut l'un des premiers à oser introduire la sexualité dans des romans de SF et il nous oblige à réfléchir aux nombreux tabous imposés par la société. Si le ton du récit est ce qui frappe le lecteur en premier, il ne faut tout de même pas en oublier le contenu. L'histoire est celle de Tarzan revue et corrigée par les bons soins de Farmer. Ce Tarzan va se retrouver aux prises avec de nombreux enemis tous plus dangereux les uns que les autres, dans une aventure menée tambour battant. Pas un moment de répit ; c'est de l'action pure. Comme dans beaucoup de romans de Farmer, on retrouve ici des personnages omnipotents et omniscients qui sont les mystérieux Neuf. Simplement évoqués de temps à autre en début d'histoire, leur rôle deviendra de plus en plus important au fil des pages. On aime ou on n'aime pas mais une chose est sûre : ce livre ne laisse pas indifférent !

LE SAIGNEUR DE LA JUNGLE Par Philip Jose Farmer Bon j'ai encore trainé avant de faire cette critique et je ne me rappelle déjà plus trop de quoi parle l'histoire. Qu'importe, si ce n'est pas un livre susceptible de révolutionner la SF, il est indéniablement génial. Pas pour l'histoire qui est plutôt quelconque mais c'est un livre qui m'a fait rire du début à la fin. L'humour est omniprésent et bien moins graveleux qu'il ne l'est dans d'autres volumes des mémoires de Watson (cf La jungle nue Très peu épais, le livre se lit extrèmement vite. La rencontre Holmes/Tarzan est vraiment originale et il est fait allusion à d'autres personnages comme Alan Quatermain ou Sir Richard Francis Burton qui est cher à Farmer et qu'on retrouve dans son cycle du Monde du Fleuve. Holmes, Watson et Tarzan n'ont bien sûr rien à voir avec les personnages d'origine et Farmer s'en donne à coeur joie avec cette interprétation toute personnelle. For five days, it burned my body and brain. Our family doctor visited me once, said I had influenza (but he didn't really know what it was), and gave me some medicine. It did little good; recovery was left up to me. Most of the time, I lay on my bed in my room in the attic. I was too sick to read, so I suffered doubly. During these fits of flames, as I call them, I had recurring dreams or hallucinations. Time and again, I saw a rather shadowy figure invade a series of tunnels and large rooms that seemed to be hollowed out of a mountain of solid jade. Actually, the whole honeycombed mountain was a city. The invader was armed with bows and arrows, and his aim never failed. The citizens were American Indians dressed like pre-Columbian Aztecs or Mayas. They were holding prisoner a woman whom the archer was trying to rescue. Over and over again, the man dressed in a deerhide headband, loincloth, and moccassins, appeared in the ill-lit corridors deep in the jade mountain. More than once, he used a wily ruse to outwit the dwellers in the jade city. Thus, I knew he was a consummate trickster. I was the feverish spectator of clips of a movie which were being played over and over. Occasionnally, I saw a scene different from the others. These were never repeated.

Shortly after receiving his BA in English from Bradley University in 1950, Farmer published his first novella, The Lovers , for which he was awarded a Hugo Award for Most Promising New Author. He has taken many chances with his writing, and is known in the science fiction world for creating quality works often filled with graphic and provocative imagery. Over the years he has continued to earn awards for his science fiction, including a Hugo Award for Best Novella for Riders of the Purple Wage in 1968 and a Hugo for Best Novel for To Your Scattered Bodies Go in 1972. He was named the 2001 Grand Master at the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America’s prestigious Nebula Awards.

On the edge of known space is the planet Kareen, also known as "Dante's Joy". The inhabitants worship the goddess Boonta and her sons Yess (the good one) and Algul (bad to the bone). The two gods are rivals for physical manifestation for only one can exist at a time. Every seven year the planet undergoes seven nights of physical and mental upheaval in what is called the Night of Light . During this time believers in the planetary religion believe that the manifested god risks murder by supporters of his rival. However, the natives believe that during this Night the power of the goddess Boonta will pervade the planet. They believe that any survivor of this chaotic, hallucinatory Night will be transformed physically. The result may be something wonderful or terrible, depending on the individual's personality and presumably on the whim of the god. One might say this is a religious detective thriller. No, it’s not the “Name Of the Rose” – a worthy book but seriously lacking in the SF content – it’s a science-fiction, religious, detective thriller. It’s also in two parts. There’s a first part, and after that, unsurprisingly, there’s a second part. They’re quite different.
