Pursuing Happiness by Lee Holmes Epicurus (341-270 BCE) a Greek philosopher, was born on the island of Samos. In 306 he moved to Athens for his required military training of 2 years. His home garden was turned into a school (known as "The Garden") where he taught his philosophy. His followers who came from all over Greece and Asia Minor were known as "the philosophers of the garden." Unlike the Academy of Plato and the Lyceum of Aristotle "The Garden" admitted women. The Epicurean philosophy was to secure tranquillity. Epicurus maintained that pleasure was "the freedom from pain and fear". Intellectual pleasures were more important than the sensual ones but essentially pleasure was what humans should strive for. The greatest sources of fear were religion and death. He taught that if we conquered our fear of gods, death and the afterlife we could achieve true happiness. Epicurus did believe in gods but claimed that they did not interfere with the affairs of the human world.

Gourmet meals are freshly prepared onboard and served on railroad china. Tables are adorned with fresh flowers and snowy-white linens. Delight-in timeless favorites...from real Old-fashioned Railroad French Toast... prepared just as you remember it....to tender Charcoal broiled steaks cooked to order. The "Epicurus" was built in 1950 by the Pullman Standard Manufacturing Company for the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad and featured on the "El Capitan" streamliner operating between Chicago and Los Angeles. It has been lovingly restored much to its original appearance with the addition of modern mechanical systems. Gleaming stainless steel and art-deco trim will bring to mind pleasant memories of that great streamline-era. The "Epicurus" is the only authentic fully Amtrak and ViaRail Canada compatible Dining Car available for private charter. Conversations on Morality Discussions on the History of Conscience and Ethics Jefferson on Epicurus "I wish I could subjoin [to the Philosophy of Jesus (i.e., The Jefferson Bible)] a translation of Gosindi's Syntagma of the doctrines of Epicurus, which, notwithstanding the calumnies of the Stoics and caricature of Cicero, is the most rational system remaining of the philosophy of the ancients, as frugal of vicious indulgence, and fruitful of virtue as the hyperbolical extravagances of his rival sects." Thomas Jefferson to Charles Thompson, 1816. "I take the liberty of observing that you are not a true disciple of our master Epicurus, in indulging the indolence to which you say you are yielding. One of his canons, you know, was that 'the indulgence which prevents a greater pleasure, or produces a greater pain, is to be avoided.' Your love of repose will lead, in its progress, to a suspension of healthy exercise, a relaxation of mind, an indifference to everything around you, and finally to a debility of body, and hebetude of mind, the farthest of all things from the happiness which the well-regulated indulgences of Epicurus ensure; fortitude, you know, is one of his four cardinal virtues. That teaches us to meet and surmount difficulties; not to fly from them, like cowards; and to fly, too, in vain, for they will meet and arrest us at every turn of our road." Ep
Epicurus (341-270 BC) Founder of the Epicurean School of philosophy which rivalled Stoicism for 5 - 600 years. Epicurus taught a materialist doctrine, in which the Gods inhabited only a space "between worlds" and did not interfere in the affairs of this world, which were governed by mechanical law or by chance. His logic set out three general principles for the establishment of the truth of a proposition. Sensation is infallible he said, for it proved the reality of outside things; preconceptions are required to cognise through sensation and thus reason. Pleasure and pain constitute the third principle. Epicurus based his physics on Democritus 's atomism, but modified it with the introduction of "swerve" which provided an escape from the determinism which followed from Democritus's theory. Epicurus u s]
    Pronunciation Key
Epicurus B.C. , Greek philosopher, b. Samos; son of an Athenian colonist. He claimed to be self-taught, although tradition states that he was schooled in the systems of Plato and Democritus by his father and various philosophers. He taught in several towns in Asia Minor before going to Athens c. 306 B.C. There Epicurus purchased the famous garden that has become linked in the annals of philosophy with the Academy of Plato and the Lyceum of Aristotle. He was a generous and genial man who lived on the warmest terms with his followers. Although his writings were voluminous, only fragments remain. Epicurus defined philosophy as the art of making life happy and strictly subordinated metaphysics to ethics, naming pleasure as the highest and only good. However, for Epicurus pleasure was not heedless indulgence but the opposite, ataraxia [serenity], manifesting itself in the avoidance of pain. His hedonism differed from the cruder variety of Aristippus and the Cyrenaics in the emphasis that it placed on ataraxia and on the superiority of intellectual pleasures over bodily pleasures. He also prescribed a code of social conduct, which advocated honesty, prudence, and justice in dealing with others, not because these virtues were good in themselves, but because they saved the individual from society's retribution. While Epicurus appropriated much of the mechanics of Democritus' metaphysics, he deviated from its deterministic implications by the introduction of an element of spontaneity, which allowed atoms to form the objects of the world by chance. The element of freedom in his metaphysics supported and paralleled his notion of the freedom of the will. He held blind destiny to be more dangerous to one's

    Epicurus van Samos (341 - 270 v. Chr.)

Epicurus Wisdom hasn't come a step further since Epicurus but has often gone many thousands of steps backwards.
    - Friedrich Nietzsche [www.epicureans.org/epitalk.htm. August 4, 1998.]
    Epicurus' Ataraxia vs Hedonism
picurus of Samos (341-270 B.C.) and his philosophy have been controversial for over two millenia. One reason is our tendency to reject pleasure as a moral good. We usually think of charity, compassion, humility, wisdom, honor, justice, and other virtues as morally good and pleasure as, at best, morally neutral, but for Epicurus, behavior in pursuit of pleasure assured an upright life. It is impossible to live a pleasant life without living wisely and honorably and justly, and it is impossible to live wisely and honorably and justly without living pleasantly. Whenever any one of these is lacking, when, for instance, the man is not able to live wisely, though he lives honorably and justly, it is impossible for him to live a pleasant life.
    By Epicurus, from Principal Doctrines
Hedonism is what many of us think of when we hear his name, but ataraxia, the experience of optimal, enduring pleasure, is what we should associate with the atomist philosopher. He says we should not try to increase our pleasure beyond the point of maximum intensity.
Think of it in terms of eating. If you're hungry, there's pain. If you eat to fill the hunger, you feel good and are behaving in accordance with Epicureanism, but if you gorge yourself, you again experience pain.
