Leaflet number 2: The Garden of Epicurus
Then as Now
Three hundred years before there were any Christians, the philosopher Epicurus founded (306 BCE ) a school, or rather college, in a small house and a garden in Athens. 'The Garden', as it is called, also published books. His philosophy taught of an infinite universe of moving particles - the one on which modern science is ultimately based. He taught that the universe evolved naturally - no gods created it, nor do they intervene in it. Life cannot exist after death so there can be no heaven and no hell. The aim of life is to avoid pain and experience pleasure, so the purpose of this life - the only one we have - must be to make it as happy as possible. And happiness is open to all. It depends upon simple needs easily satisfied, prudence in all things, friendship, kindness, a pain-free body and tranquillity of mind. In all, a philosophy for ancient and modern times. His outlook spread throughout the Roman world, but after many centuries of influence it was eventually smothered by the dominance of Christianity. There is now renewed interest in it.

[Pleasure and "Taste"] ["Sense-Perception," "Wholeness," and the Soul] [Education]
Epicurus
picurus (342-270 B.C.E.), a Greek philosopher active during the Hellenistic period, had a defining influence on those identified as Aesthetes and Decadents , particularly Walter Pater and his occasional disciple Oscar Wilde . Most of the philosopher's beliefs about art, the soul, and educationwhich survive only in several letters and a collection of maxims are adapted to nineteenth-century Decadent ideals in Pater's Marius the Epicurean (and, in a more diffused way, in Appreciations ). His thoughts also inform Wilde's Picture of Dorian Gray A survey of Epicurus's philosophy helps complete the picture of what the Aesthetes believed and allowed to influence their work.
Pleasure and Taste
"Sense Perception," "Wholeness," and the Soul
In Appreciations , Pater quotes Gustave Flaubert: There are no beautiful thoughts without beautiful forms, and conversely. As it is impossible to extract from a physical body the qualities which really constitute it without reducing it to a hollow abstraction, in a word, without destroying it; just so it is impossible to detach the form from the idea, for the idea only exists by virtue of its form (28). Flaubert and Pater concern themselves with "wholeness" of being; both believe strongly that the object must be studied in its entirety, or else it is not the object that is being considered, but a fragment that has no meaningful relationship with the whole. To use the example that Oscar Wilde paints in

Epicurus
(341-270 BC) Philosopher from Samos who founded a school in Mytilene on Lesbos, and also became head of a school in Lampsacus (today's Turkey).
Epicurus came from a poor family, but showed such talent that his parents through many hardships kept him in school. As a youth he did military service in Athens, and was to return later to teach his ideas.
He had many disciples, and they were called the "philosophers of the garden" since most teachings took place his garden. Both women and men were welcome, which resulted in much gossip about the ongoings there.
Although Epicurus wrote many texts, only little has survived to the afterworls. We do now he wrote on such varied subjects as physics, love, justice and the gods.
One of his basic ideas was that one should try to achieve pleasure and avoid pain through clarity and balance of mind and thought.
"Life's fundamental priciple is the satisfaction of the needs and wants of the stomach. All important and trivial matters depend on this principle and cannot be differentiated from it."

Epicurus (341-270 B.C.)
Greek philosopher who was born on the Ionian island of Samos. Eventually, he moved to Athens where he opened a school of philosophy in a garden that he had bought and laid out for the purpose. He developed further the doctrine of atomism , as expounded by Leucippus and Democritus , including the idea that life exists elsewhere in the universe. In his Letter to Herodotus , he writes: . . . there are infinite worlds both like and unlike this world of ours . . . we must believe that in all worlds there are living creatures and plants and other things we see in this world. . . . Everything, he believed, could be explained in terms of natural causes. As for the gods, he taught that they existed only in the spaces between worlds, having no interest at all in human affairs. Epicurus
picurus (341-270 BC) had two principal teachers – the Platonist Pamphilus in his teens, and Nausiphanes of Teos, who introduced him to the atomism of Democritus, in his twenties – but he distanced them firmly, calling the latter a "scoundrel", to form his own school of thought, which was extraordinary in allowing both sexes as students.
The principal source to his life and theories is Diogenes Laertius, who wrote appreciatively and extensively about him in Lives of Eminent Philosophers . Epicurus is said to have written some 300 books, but what remains is principally some letters of his, and fragments mostly in the form of aphorisms. Among the letters, one known as the Lesser Epitome , written to his student Herodotus, later to break with and loudly criticize him, lays out the general lines of his cosmology as well as his ethics. Letters to some other students also remain, giving additional confirmations to the views of Epicurus.
He stated that since nothing can be created from what does not exist, the universe must always have existed and always will be – consisting of bodies made up of atoms, in continual motion, and space. The universe must also be unlimited, since there cannot be a nothing outside of it, but within it "there is an infinite number of worlds, some like this world, others unlike it." These worlds are created out of the infinite and dissolved, some sooner and some later. Regarding the soul, Epicurus is quite precise:
