The questions, discussion topics, and author biography that follow are intended to enhance your group's reading of Nathan Englander's For the Relief of Unbearable Urges , one of the most widely acclaimed debuts in recent contemporary fiction. With remarkable deftness, humor, and wisdom, Nathan Englander illuminates the dilemmas of his characters as they struggle with marital difficulty, obsession, desire, and spiritual crisis. The result is a collection of unforgettable modern fables that transcend the particularities of time and place. Members of a fabled Hasidic sect, rounded up to be sent to a concentration camp, avoid their fate by posing as acrobats on a circus train; an aging wigmaker pursues a young delivery man in New York City so that she can make herself a wig from his glorious curly hair; a wealthy Park Avenue WASP undergoes a sudden conversion to Orthodox Judaism while riding in a taxi; a young writer in Stalinist Russia is mistakenly put to death at the moment of his first creative success. These and other extraordinarily inventive stories invite comparison with those of Franz Kafka and Bernard Malamud.

ACCLAIMED WRITER nathan englander TO SPEAK AT SAN DIEGO JEWISH BOOK FAIR. . . It’s happening with nathan englander, commented Ann Beattie.

Press Release — San Diego Jewish Book Fair FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 7, 1999 FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT: Jacqueline Gmach, Book Fair Coordinator ACCLAIMED WRITER NATHAN ENGLANDER
TO SPEAK AT SAN DIEGO JEWISH BOOK FAIR
The Fifth Annual San Diego Jewish Book Fair, which will take place from November 13 through 16 at the Lawrence Family JCC, is proud to present a lecture featuring Nathan Englander on Sunday, November 14 at 7:30 PM. Englander will be discussing his collection of short stories, For the Relief of Unbearable Urges . A book signing will follow the lecture. Nathan Englander created instantaneous excitement in the publishing industry when editors first began hearing about his work last year. Englander, an unknown twenty-eight year old writer with his first collection, was suddenly the subject of a fiercely competitive publishing house bidding war. Critics fueled the buzz with their rave reviews: "Every so often there’s a new voice that entirely revitalizes the short story . . . . It’s happening with Nathan Englander," commented Ann Beattie. Englander’s tales–moral fables of pathos and hilarity–refract human nature through the lens of the Orthodox Judaism of Englander’s youth. He was raised in an Orthodox community on Long Island, and has since broken from it. He is both an insider and an outsider, a cultural vantage point that infuses his work with both exuberant irreverence and inescapable sadness. While Englander’s stories invite the reader into the closed worlds of Hasidic and Orthodox Jews, his subtexts explore human nature and the universally compelling themes of love, fear, frustration, identity, vanity, and shame. They cover vast historical, philosophical, and emotional distances, showcasing the author’s electrifying ability to universalize the deepest ethnic parts of Judaism.

The Last Fool of Chelm
How Nathan Englander Survives His New Fame By David Garza Nathan Englander has taken the pulpit. A small crowd is gathered in the synagogue on a cool Monday night during the 16th Annual Austin Jewish Book Fair, and right at the altar, just below the massive stone tablets declaring the laws of the holy, straight to the right of the representations of fire, and before the eyes of the town, the young writer opens his book and reads not from the scriptures but from For the Relief of Unbearable Urges , a collection of short stories published by Knopf. "Reb Kringle," he says, announcing the funniest story in his book, the tale of a cranky old Jew who is whipped into working as shopping mall Santa by his wife. But despite all the laughter as the unlikely Santa loses his cool and goes berserk in a shop full of gentiles, the questions after the reading are heavy and strangely important. "How should we teach Judaism to our secular children?" asks a woman from the audience. A few minutes later, another audience member shares her memories of the day Benjamin Netanyahu slipped into power. Though he is just 29, and though he has still only published one collection of nine short stories, Nathan Englander has instantly become one of those most rare public figures in our society: the writer whose opinions are heatedly sought, meticulously recorded, and taken directly to heart. And while it's happened elsewhere that poets have become dictators and playwrights have staged whole fiscal policies, it seems sweetly bizarre that the role of the artist has changed just a bit, in this country anyway, to accommodate this young and talented writer.

Unbearably Good
Nathan Englander delivers a stunning collection By John Freeman FOR THE RELIEF OF UNBEARABLE URGES, by Nathan Englander. Knopf, 206 pages, $22. Bernard Malamud and Philip Roth won the 1959 and 1960 National Book Awards for their first story collections, The Magic Barrel and Goodbye, Columbus , respectively, and it will be no surprise if Nathan Englander's debut repeats this award performance in 1999. It is not just the clarity and virtuosity of Englander's stories that makes them outstanding. It is Englander's voice, which comes to us bold, unwavering, and with a whiff of prophecy that, like Roth's and Malamud's writing, expands the boundaries of the story to near-hallucinatory vistas. For the Relief of Unbearable Urges Many of Englander's characters live, like Ruchama, in a state of hyperconsciousness that is a blend of piety and lunacy. Like Dostoyevsky's characters, they are so devoted to their idea of faith that it makes them outcasts. In "The Gilgul of Park Avenue," an unassuming WASP named Charles Morton Louger discovers, as he rides uptown in a cab, that he has a Jewish soul. ("Ping! Like that it came. Like a knife against a glass.") His wife does not like this development at all, so he goes to the Royal Hills Mystical Jewish Reclamation Center and speaks with a rabbi from Bolinas, California another man who "suddenly" discovered his Jewish soul. When Louger gets his rabbi, shrink, and wife together, the outcome is anything but resolution. In "Reunion," an on-again, off-again mental patient named Marty meets a John Doe while recuperating in a mental hospital. Marty decides to help Doe both get better and reunite with his rabbi brother. Two trips to Brooks Brothers and a regimen of medication later, they crash a party at the house of the rabbi, who shoves Doe into the street, telling him to "Go . . . back to your gutter. Take your fancy clothes and get away." Again and again, characters rap their heads against a world that is comically and tragically indifferent to their deepest desires. As the Bolinas-born rabbi says: "There is no hope for the pious."

For our user agree- ment, click here Short stories tap Orthodox Jews' rich vein of life Newcomer Nathan Englander portrays people wrestling with politics, history, spirituality Wednesday, April 14, 1999 By Diana Abu-Jaber, Special writer, The Oregonian Popular wisdom holds that stories don't sell not to publishers and not to the reading public. But in recent years a wide current of graceful and spirited story collections, including Lori Moore's Birds of America , Junot Diaz's Drown and Alice Munro's The Love of a Good Woman have worked to re-establish the genre that Raymond Carver called the form of writing closest to poetry. This is also the age of mega-advances and first-work wunderkinder. Newcomer Nathan Englander, described by one editor as "Isaac Bashevis Singer on crack," is unique not so much for the hefty advance he received as for the fact that this hefty advance is for a collection of short stories. Not to mention that the subject of Englander's first book, For the Relief of Unbearable Urges , is the Orthodox Jewish community.

Recommended Reading Englander, Nathan. For the Relief of Unbearable Urges Alfred A. Knopf, 1999.
Nathan Englander ventured outside the insular Orthodox Jewish world of his New York community to master the art of writing. In this pursuit, he traversed foreign borders and discovered that he could not find his way home. He now lives in Jerusalem and has burst onto the literary scene with this exquisitely crafted collection of short stories, delectably entitled For the Relief of Unbearable Urges . The search for connection and meaning, belonging and security give definition to the unbearable urges that animate the characters in these stories. Yet the quest emerges from circumstances that are thrust upon the protagonists and prove beyond their control. In one story, a buttoned-up Protestant undergoes a religious awakening in the back of a taxi on his way home. He realizes to his utter astonishment that he is actually Jewish. The task he sets for himself
and his wife is to learn how to swallow this indigestible fact.
