By Amy Benfer L et it be known that Dave Eggers does not want to be interviewed. In the past month, the editor of McSweeney's, a literary quarterly that even Harper's magazine editor Lewis Lapham thinks is hip, and the author of a "memoir-y kind of thing" called "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius," has been interviewed by the New York Times, the Village Voice, Time magazine and assorted publications too numerous to mention. Michiko Kakutani, the famously cantankerous New York Times book reviewer, has agreed that Eggers' talent is "staggering," as have writers David Foster Wallace, Rick Moody, David Sedaris and David Remnick (who published an excerpt of his book in the New Yorker under the title of "Here Come the Orphans!" earlier this year.) His readings are standing room only, the new issue of McSweeney's sells out as soon as it arrives (shipping is rather slow, as Eggers decided to have them printed in Iceland), and even his publisher ran out of review copies of the book a week before its publication date. The book in question, Eggers' first, is about a boy (Dave Eggers) raising another boy (his brother, Christopher, called "Toph"). The Eggers' parents died of cancer within 32 days of each other, leaving Dave, then 21, as the surrogate parent of Toph, then 8. They leave their home in the wealthy suburb of Lake Forest (outside Chicago) and follow sister Beth, then 23, to Berkeley, where she attends law school.

Looks like the thin-skinned boy wonder author has done this sort of thing to journalists before. Of course, none of this actually happened.
Dave Eggers Screwed Me Too By David J. Plotkin I lost patience with Dave Eggers months ago. After attempting to conduct a simple e-mail interview, I discovered that his temper and self-righteousness make him impossible to deal with. But some background is necessary. Vanity Fair, George or Auto Trader Zagat New York City Restaurant Guide 2001 The job provided many insights into the shadowy world of restaurant-guide publishing, including the fact that, at 21 years of age, I was by far the oldest employee. Oh, and none of us were actually permitted to visit the restaurants up for review. We also had to dress in business attire, unlike the employees of the dot-coms in the building with us, who were not even required to wear shoes. bunch. And, as if to answer a prayer, I was permitted by my boss to include quotes from this star of the literary community. First, though, I had to contact Eggers and convince him to be interviewed.

Due to the Monday President's Day holiday, National Dave Eggers week got off to a delayed, though none-the-less dizzying start in Boston this past Tuesday. Appearing on The Connection radio show, along with simultaneous pieces in Salon , the Boston Globe , and Slate , Eggers proved he was a master of the media. And he has a great PR agent. But enough of this fawning, let's get to the point. For those who don't know, Dave Eggers, editor of the literary quarterly Timothy McSweeney's Quarterly Concern , has written a book titled " A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius ." Nice title. It tells the story of how at the age of 22, Eggers became both an orphan and guardian of his 8-year-old brother, Toph. But enough about the book, because I haven't even finished reading it yet (even though I'm sending in for my $5 today What really caught my attention was his interview on The Connection where he said that when writing he had to see how the piece would appear on the page; had to see the font and the page breaks

Published by McSweeney's and available only at independent bookstores, the fiction debut by the author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius tells the story of Will and Hand, two Midwestern twentysomethings who, in the wake of a friend's death, set off on a one-week around-the-world trip to randomly give away $32,000. Says the New York Times: "This book shows that Mr. Eggers can write about pretty much anything and make it glitter and somersault on the page."

Readers are advised in the preface that "many parts have been fictionalized," but it is not really clear how much is "real" here and how much is spoof. What could be funny about the final days of Eggers' mother's battle with stomach cancer, just a month after the loss of his father to another form of cancer? Eggers' seemingly flippant, but piercingly observant style, allows hilarity to lead the way in a very personal and revealing recounting of the loss of his parents. Barely out of college, Eggers is responsible for the care of his eight-year-old brother, Toph. Together they relocate from the Midwest to Berkeley, where their sister Beth is in law school. Young, eager, full of himself, Eggers teams up with like-minded pals in the media-crazed early 90s to create the satirical magazine Might , while also making sure he's there for Toph's Little League games and parent/teacher conferences. Eggers voices the classic youthful assumption that the world belongs (or should belong) to him. From anyone else this might be incredibly annoying, but so much is tongue-in-cheek in this work. Not just for the MTV-fan age group, this is a very entertaining, well-written book.

Eggers, Dave A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius
Genre Memoir (375 pp.) Keywords Abandonment Adolescence Alcoholism Cancer ... Survival Summary An imaginative recreation of profound personal loss, the resulting changes wrought by unexpected responsibility as well as opportunity, all occurring during the progression from late adolescence into young adulthood, this work is centered on the death and its aftermath of the author's parents 32 days apart, when the author was 21 years old (in 1991). With two siblings embarked on their own careers, it was Dave who took on "parenthood" of their eight-year old brother, "Toph." The book details first, the mother's death, then, the life that Eggers and Toph negotiate for themselves and with each other after they move from suburban Chicago to Berkeley, California, and, finally, Dave's return visit to his hometown, wherein he seeks to exorcise some ghosts. In between these landmarks are reflections on family relationships, including that with a shadowy, alcoholic father; the launch of a satiric magazine, "Might" (a title meant to signify both power and possibility); concern for wounded friends; attempts to lead a "normal" life.

    http://www.mcsweeneys.net/
Dear readers, Early Friday morning, a plane carrying Amanda Davis and her parents crashed into a mountain in North Carolina. There were no survivors. Amanda Davis was one of the funniest, self-effacing, chutzpah-charged and big-hearted human beings anyone could ever hope to encounter. To meet her was always an historical event, one you would remember for the rest of your life. Amanda was essential. She was vital. She was a forceful and generous (and forcefully generous) presence. She was the magnetic core around which a lot of people swirled, and as such she was a facilitator of relationships and possibility of all sorts. Many of us were connected, through her, to a community that she created and maintained; she made life feel cozy, small, family-like, even for people who lived 3000 miles apart. With her energetic pragmatism, she commanded the chaotic, nonsensical world to work better, and it did, or at least it seemed to, when she was around. So we who knew her personally will be robbed of HER (don't get me started on what she's been robbed of). Those who didn't know her personally, those who knew her only (or additionally) through her writing, are robbed of the books she'd yet to write. Amanda was an extremely gifted writer, one just managing to wrestle her many talents into a honed, inimitable voice. Her first book, Circling the Drain , was published by William Morrow in 1999, and was one of the more daring examples of short fiction in the last ten years. Her work floated somewhere between poetry and prose, untethered by narrative, but always concerned with matters of the heart. Her story, "Fat Ladies Floated in the Sky Like Balloons," was published in McSweeney's second issue, and exemplified everything they were looking for: it was experimental but lyrical, brave but full of soul. She was, as many have said, "the real thing."
