Greg Egan
Australian SF Writer From an interview published in Eidolon 11 , January 1993, pp.18-30:
"I don't want to write motherhood statements feel-good stories that cave in at the end and do nothing but confirm everything you ever wanted to believe; I've done that in the past, and it's insidious. Stories like that should be burned. If I'm certain of anything, it's that understanding how the real world works - how human brains actually function, how morality and emotions and decisions actually arise is essential to any kind of ethical stance which will make sense in the long term. If that gets me branded 'mechanistic', so be it."
"I was raised as a Christian, and I still retain a lot of the values of Christianity. The trouble with basing values on religions, though, is that the premises of most of them are pure wishful thinking; you either have to refuse to scrutinise those premises - take them on faith, declare that they 'transcend logic' - or reject them. As Paul Davies has said, most Christian theologians have retreated from all the things that their religion supposedly asserts; they take a much more 'modern' view than the average believer. But by the time you've 'modernised' something like Christianity - starting off with

The Hallway The Library The Gallery The Music Room ... The Links "Diaspora", by Greg Egan Millennium, UK paperback, 1998 (© 1997), £6.99, 384 pages. ISBN 0-75280-925-3 This book did my head in. I don't know how to start explaining that, though I will point out that it is not a criticism. Greg Egan was something of an unknown quantity to me when I bought this book, though I knew that he was supposed to have a good line in speculation and extrapolation. I had read a couple of his short stories in Interzone a few years ago, and was particularly impressed with one called "Learning to be Me". But this is the first of his novels that I've read. As a novel, it's a little peculiar in some ways. The first section, "Orphanogenesis", is a great hunk of exposition about the origin of one of the prime characters, Yatima. Not unusual for a nineteenth century novel, perhaps, but decidedly odd in a modern one. Also, whilst Egan's speculation about the growth and development of autonomous software agents (i.e. the equivalent of human-level minds in a post-Singularity society) is well-thought out and detailed, and perhaps even accurate, it's also rather dull, and I can imagine some readers putting the book down and not picking it up again. Though the post-humans are tremendously advanced, they are not as gods, and are unable to prevent a tremendous natural disaster from striking the Earth, and wiping out all remaining life, in the form of a wave of charged particles from a nearby gamma-ray burster (or GRB). This was not forseen, as the orbits of the twin neutron stars that comprised the GRB decayed unexpectedly fast, so that there was only a few days warning. This was not predicted by Kozuch theory, which is the hypothetical dominant physical theory of the time (it seems to be a modified form of string theory. I think.). Egan spends quite a lot of time on explaining this theory, its possible flaws and its modification in the light of events. I presume this was all his own work.

Paperback - 249 pages (21 February, 2002) Gollancz; ISBN: 0575071230. M ore than any modern writer I can think of Egan's books have always relied almost exclusively on the Big Idea. This is a very precarious position, however. For one, Big Ideas are hard to come by. For another, they cannot always carry a novel by themselves. It is a testament to Egan's creativity that he's managed to write as many entertaining books as he has under these conditions. His early books, I think, did many things that had never been done before. However, for me, Egan hit the wall with Diaspora The ideas were uninteresting, and the book had little else to recommend it. Teranesia had more of an attempt at characterization than is usual for Egan, but he remains pretty bad at it. Unfortunately, Schild's Ladder doesn't represent an improvement.

Quarantine
Greg Egan
Legend Books 1992 A book review by Danny Yee Quarantine begins as a high tech future thriller, with a private detective hired to find a missing woman in a late 21st century Australia where, among other things, one can download software into one's brain, something has sealed the solar system within an impenetrable Bubble, and New Hong Kong has been built on top of Arnhem land. But these glimpses of an exciting future are never really developed or explored in detail, as the focus quickly shifts to the metaphysics of quantum mechanics. This is a science fiction oldie, and one that is usually dealt with rather poorly. (Giving humans conscious control over fundamental physics is all too often used as a deus ex machina to solve the plot problems at the end of a novel: Orson Scott Card's Xenocide is a recent example.) Egan makes one big (massively implausible?) assumption - that wave function collapse is the responsibility of a particular part of the brain and that with the right neural modification people can learn to avoid doing it, producing a "smeared out" universe - but otherwise his scenario is internally consistent. Even more importantly, Quarantine actually tries to "follow through" on the consequences of its assumptions, and manages to bring something of their full metaphysical immensity home to the reader. If you are interested in this kind of philosophical exploration of quantum mechanics then
