Enjoy an afternoon of Americana music and literature from beloved North Carolina novelist Clyde Edgerton and fellow band members, Jack King and Matt Kendrick. The author of "Raney" and "Walking Across Egypt," Edgerton will read (and sing!) from his forthcoming novel, due out in September 2003. It's vintage Edgerton - a story about a musician/awning installer's escapades with his elderly, irrepressible Aunt Lil. Edgerton is a former member of The Tarwater Band and currently a professor of creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. King, the band's guitar player, plays professionally in North Carolina. He's a member of the group, Brice Street. Kendrick, an adjunct professor of music at Wake Forest University also teaches and plays professionally in North Carolina. He plays the upright bass for the Rank Strangers.
"Songs & Stories from Clyde Edgerton and the Rank Strangers Band" is presented by the ALA Public Programs Office and Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Wallace-Reader's Digest Funds, and additional support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

For his seventh novel, Clyde returns to the setting of his own childhood, a North Carolina crossroads community at mid twentieth century. With a newly installed blinking red-and-yellow light to accommodate growing traffic, the 1950 Listre crossroads also boasts a grocery store, a service station, a barber shop, a variety store, a grill, some tourist cabins, and a few houses. This is the story of what happens when a stranger passing though decides to spend a few days there. top of the page

While he was growing up in North Carolina, probably no one would have predicted that Clyde Edgerton would be a professional writer. Most would have placed bets on his being a baseball player or a rock musician, even though his parents thought he might be a missionary or a concert pianist. He loved to hunt and fish with buddies. But even without early signs of literary leanings, Clyde has become one of the most prominent contemporary writers. Even though he is a product of the South, drawing primarily from one segment of society, his insight into the human condition makes his work universal. With degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he has taught writing and English education at various colleges and universities. He is very much in demand as a speaker about the writing process and as a reader of his own fiction. Clyde continues to write in Orange County, North Carolina, where he lives with his wife, Susan, and daughter, Catherine. top of the page

by Lyman W. Few who knew Clyde Edgerton during his childhood would have predicted that he would grow up to be an author. Odds would have been placed on his being either a professional baseball player or a rock musician; or, if his parents wishes would have been fulfilled, a missionary or concert pianist. He loved the amazing outdoor world. He loved to fish, and he hunted and hung out with his "good buddies". There was little indication that he had the slightest literary leanings. Edgerton was born May, 20, 1944, in Durham, North Carolina, and then lived in the small community of Bethesda, which is located on the outskirts of Durham. He was the only child of Ernest and Truma Edgerton. Even though his immediate family was small, he lived near a total of 23 aunts and uncles and numerous cousins. Edgerton's choice of English as a major in college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill evolved slowly. Though he was a good student who enjoyed literature, his reading had been somewhat sporadic. During high school he recalls being impressed by Emerson, Thoreau, and Twain. But, after reading Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms as a college sophomore, he decided to be an English teacher.

http://www.naplesnews.com/today/books/edger18.htm
Book Review: 'Where Trouble Sleeps,' by Clyde Edgerton
Thursday, September 18, 1997 By FREDRIC KOEPPEL, Scripps Howard News Service - WHERE TROUBLE SLEEPS by Clyde Edgerton (Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, $18.95) "Mephistopheles Comes to Mayberry," asserts the copy inside the dust jacket of Clyde Edgerton's new novel, "Where Trouble Sleeps." The trouble with the novel is there's too much Mayberry and not enough Mephistopheles. Sly, wry Clyde Edgerton has done an unaccountable thing; he's gone soft and sweet and written a novel one heartbeat short of being warmhearted. One always remarked on the appropriateness of this author's name: "Clyde" for his bona fide rural Southernness, "Edgerton" for the edge, the nerviness, the slightly sardonic touch he brought to his small-town fiction. This is not the case with "Where Trouble Sleeps," in which the inhabitants of Listre, N.C., population 511, talk low and slow and exhibit all the charming eccentricities we have come to expect from characters in amiable Southern fiction. The novel is set in the 1950s, a cheap ploy guaranteed to provoke readers' - some readers' - nostalgia for supposedly more innocent times, a notion Edgerton artificially reinforces by inserting at the end a map of Listre, renamed Hunter's Grove, in the year 2000, complete with fast-food outlets, a video store and subdivisions, none of which has anything to do with the plot of the novel. Edgerton employs multiple points of view to present the episodic stories that merge to form the book's loosely strung plot. The most interesting perspectives are those of 6-year-old Stephen Toomey, the novel's most compelling character, who views the activities of the adults around him with wide-eyed and laconic puzzlement, and Jack Umstead, the con man who breezes into town just rarin' to get into some kind of mischief. Jack's the kind who thinks a lot, considering, for example, if you could measure how many people say "automobile" and how many people say "car." Things like that, deep.

Clyde Edgerton - 1944 Durham By Chris R. I. Biography Clyde Edgerton is a North Carolina author who has written many famous novels. They are: Raney Walking Across Egypt The Floatplane Notebooks Killer Diller In Memory of Junior Redeye and Where Trouble Sleeps Edgerton was born on May 20, 1944 in Durham North Carolina. He lived near his 23 aunts and uncles who loved to tell him stories. These experiences are some of the things that got Edgerton interested in writing. He had a good childhood. He was very popular in his community due to his outgoing personality and good sense of humor. Not many people would have guessed that Clyde would have become an author, many people thought he would grow up to play baseball or be a hunter. Edgerton went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After reading A Farewell to Arms Edgerton wanted nothing more than to be an English teacher so he could share his excitement for such literature with students. Edgerton was in the Air Force ROTC program where he learned to fly small planes. After graduation in 1966, he was offered to join the United States Air Force. He took the offer and for the next 4 years he served on active duty flying fighter planes. He flew in the U.S., Korea, and Japan. When Edgerton finished in the Air Force, he decided to go back to college and get his masters degree before starting his career as an English teacher. After getting his degree, he became an English teacher at his old high school. All of the students loved Edgerton because he brought the literature that he read to them to life. His success inspired him to return to the University and to begin a doctoral program. In graduate school, Edgerton met Susan Ketchin who was another graduate student in English education. They both loved the stories of Eudora Welty and Flannery O'Conner. Then in 1975, they were married in his home church, Bethesda Baptist.

RANEY

My first reaction to the book, Raney , was one of disgust. How could the main character, Raney, be so narrow-minded?! Edgerton is a very talented writer because he makes the reader almost hate, but at the same time love her, and he pulls this off wonderfully. Raney was taught to be prejudice by her parents. While Raney and her husband, Charles, are in therapy, she is trying to overcome her feelings of racism to help the marriage. Edgerton wrote this book not to just illistrate a Southern marriage, but to also show the reader what a racist person is like. This is not the type of book I would normally pick up, but I found it quite entertaining. Just as in life, this book contains some funny parts, and also some sad parts. Raney basically shows what it is like to be in a marriage where there are some major differences between the husband and wife. The book had a cast of interesting characters, and it showed me a new side of people and their beliefs. I mostly relate to Charles, Raney's husband, because he is a lot more open-minded in comparison to Raney. The setting was familiar, too, because I live in North Carolina, where the story takes place. Edgerton's style of writing is so precise that he forces me to wonder "Are there still people like that?" After reading the book, I found myself repulsed by the fact that someone could be so adamant in their beliefs. That is exactly the response Edgerton wanted.
