Lois Duncan Readers are always wanting to know, “What are you doing now?” (I think that must be one of the questions teachers assign for students to ask people.) What am I doing right now? Right this very minute? I’m sitting at my computer in my home office, gazing out through the sliding glass doors into our back yard and wishing the snow would melt and buds would appear on all the branches. By the time you read this message, that will probably already have happened, because I update this site only once about every three months. But, right now as I write this, we’re still on the outer edge of winter and I’m hungry for spring. I wish it were as easy to make it springtime “for real” as it is to do it in a book. When I wrote THE THIRD EYE, I originally set the story in the autumn. I had a lovely description at the end of Chapter One, with my heroine, Karen, stepping out the door into a “crisp autumn afternoon” with red and gold trees blowing in the wind and asters blooming in the flowerbeds. Then I suddenly realized that the story wouldn’t work that way. I needed for Karen, the teenage psychic, to be free to spend her time helping the police find missing children, and she couldn’t very well do that if she was in school all day.

Last year, when her book, I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, was made into a movie, Lois Duncan fans all over resurrected old copies of classic Duncan novels and new fans ran out to buy them. Who can forget STRANGER WITH MY FACE about the girl whose evil twin haunts her, or GALLOWS HILL, the one about a modern day witch who has to fight for her life the latter was actually made into a TV movie.
Here is an interview with Lois Duncan which was done by Nathalie op de Beeck. Read on to find out about the woman behind the mystery.

Lois Duncan
about this author
Lois Duncan grew up in Sarasota, Florida and from early childhood she knew she wanted to be a writer. She submitted her first story to a magazine at the age of 10 and made her first sale at 13. Throughout her high-school years, she wrote regularly for young people's publications, particularly Seventeen Magazine.
"My first book was a young adult novel because I wrote it at age 20, and teenage subject matter was all I knew about," Duncan says. "Today, although I write other types of books as well, I still choose to write primarily for teenagers because I love the sensitivity, vulnerability and responsiveness of that age reader."
Duncan is best known for her brilliant psychological suspense novels. She was drawn to this genre because those were the books he enjoyed reading. Of her writing technique, she once said, "Although I've been told that some authors start writing with only a general idea in mind and let their stories evolve on their own, I couldn't work that way. My books are tightly plotted and carefully constructed; every sentence is there for a reason. Personally, I can't imagine writing a book without knowing exactly how it's going to end. It would be like setting out on a cross-country trip without a road map."

Lois says, “I spend so much of my time submerged in the minds of the teenage characters in my novels that it comes as a shock when I look in the mirror and find I have gray in my hair.” In 1989, her daughter Kaitlyn was murdered. Her death eerily mirrored Lois’s book, Don’t Look Behind You . Since then, Lois has become interested in the paranormal and ESP. 6-24-00 MK Source: Authors and Artists, Vol. 4, pgs. 81-94.

March 10, 2003 I finally saw the Summer of Fear movie. I bought the DVD version of it at a local WalMart for eleven dollars (including tax). Anyway, I saw the movie with the commentary and without the commentary the other day. Is it like the book? Is it even good? It is both, very much so. Out of all the Lois Duncan movies I've seen (except Held For Ransom), this is the best adaptation from a Duncan novel. I am surprised at how close to the book this movie followed. Of course, there are some differences. For example, Rachel has a horse, Sun Dancer, instead of a dog. Linda Blair, the actress who plays Rachel, loves horses, and in order to entice her to the role, the producers change the dog to a horse. Also, Julia's seduction to Mr. Bryant is more up front in the movie than the book. We see scenes of Julia charming him and using seductive ploys to win his affection, and we also see a rift between Rachel's parents because of this. The climax and ending are little different and more dramatic than the book. The commentary with Wes Craven, the director, and Max A. Keller, the producer, is informative at times but pretty dry. I guess it's pretty hard to give "interesting" tidbits about a movie made almost 25 years ago! Still, it's worth listening to the commentary. I learned a few things.
