Research Interests
Dr. Palmer's research interests span the areas of analytical, inorganic and physical chemistry. Current projects involve the use of FTIR spectroscopy in the investigation of dynamic processes on the nanosecond to millisecond time scale. Included are nanosecond studies of photoexcited states in metalloproteins and other metal complexes, rheo-optical measurements of the sub-molecular dynamics of polymer films perturbed by mechanical fields and development of fiber optic-based photothermal spectral detection for materials and biomedical applications.

Ranulf (the Crusader)
Born:
Died: 1232

The sixth Earl of Cheshire, and the only son of Hugh, the fifth. Ranulf married Constance of Brittany in 1188, the widow of King Henry II's son Geoffrey who died in 1186. Ranulf not only had ownership of a very rich area of the country, but he also became related to the king of England. In 1218 he joined the Fifth Crusade, but returned in 1220. Once back in England, Ranulf's experiences of castle building abroad helped him design and begin construction of the castle at Beeston. He did not live to see it completed. York, Richard, duke of 1411-60, English nobleman, claimant to the throne. He was descended from Edward III through his father, Richard, earl of Cambridge, grandson of that king, and also through his mother, Anne Mortimer, great-granddaughter of Lionel, duke of Clarence, who was the third son of Edward III. Richard was brought up as a royal ward, having become duke of York on the death of his uncle Edward in 1415. He inherited (1425) the vast estates of another uncle, Edmund de Mortimer, 5th earl of March, which made him the richest landholder in England. He served in the retinue of Henry VI in France (1431) and was lieutenant general of France and Normandy (1436-37). In 1438 he married Cecily Neville, daughter of the earl of Westmoreland. He served again as lieutenant general in France from 1441 to 1445 but became increasingly discontented with the English government, which diverted men and funds from his operations to those of John Beaufort, 1st duke of Somerset. The death of the king's uncle Humphrey, duke of Gloucester, in 1447 made York heir presumptive to the throne, and the government, to get him out of the way, promptly ordered him to Ireland as lieutenant. He did not go until 1449 and returned in 1450 to struggle against the growing power of Queen Margaret of Anjou and Edmund Beaufort, 2d duke of

Famous People: Richard Simmons, Uncle Duke, and more
    by Dennis Sellers, dsellers@maccentral.com
March 6, 2000, 7:00 am ET There's no particular rhyme, reason, or theme to today's Famous People column. What can I say, it's Monday. Fernando Vbarra notes that apparently fitness guru Richard Simmons is a Mac user or at least the designer who put together his infomercial sets, in which several iMacs appear. But Vbarra says his weirdest experience was seeing iMacs at the local Costco store. "They sell for $698, and there were a swarm of people around the display model, looking curiously at the iMac and ignoring all the adjacent PCs on display," he adds. "Uncle Duke" of the "Doonesbury" comic strip is running for president as a "coercive libertarian" who hopes to be "the ferret in the pants of democracy." His campaign videos are available in Streaming QuickTime at http://www.duke2000.com . (Thanks to Jim Barufaldi for this nugget.) At the Detroit Auto Show Eshel Zweig was pleasantly surprised to see that most of the car show displays were enhanced by an assortment of Macs highlighting their respective Web sites. And at the Cleveland Auto Show (the fifth largest in the country) on Feb. 27, Timothy Stabb noticed that Oldsmobile was using five iMac DV SEs as standalone kiosks at their display. They also had G4s hooked up to Apple 15-inch LCD displays at their information booth. Kris Selvig gets a laugh every time the New York NBC affiliate promotes its Web site. They show a shot of the home page to the site, which is obviously on a Mac machine since the menu bar is totally visible, he adds.

Henry VI and Richard, Duke of York 1453 - 61 Richard, Duke of York was the largest landowner in England after Henry VI. Repeatedly excluded from the King's Council, in 1450 he made an unauthorised return from a posting to Ireland and demanded the removal of the King's current favourite, Edmund Beaufort, Duke of Somerset. In 1452 he raised an army in Yorkshire and marched on London, where he was told that his grievances would be met and induced to promise to keep the peace. Henry's pledges went unfulfilled. Finally, in 1455 York's forces confronted the King at St Albans. Somerset was killed; York, victorious, reaffirmed his loyalty to the King. After St Albans, York was again out-manoeuvred, primarily by Queen Margaret. After a skirmish with the Yorkists in 1459, she had York declared a traitor. In response York again marched south. After defeating the King's forces at Northampton, he entered London and claimed the throne for himself. Parliament was nonplussed, eventually proposing a compromise: Henry would remain King but disinherit his son Prince Edward in York's favour. Unappeased, Queen Margaret launched a counter-attack. Early in 1461, York was defeated and killed at Wakefield.

Our research centers on the molecular mechanisms by which epithelial cell polarity and specialized plasma membrane domains, in particular intercellular junctions, are established and maintained. We are especially interested in understanding how components of signal transduction pathways are organized into specialized membrane domains. One area of focus is the Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) tumor suppressor gene, a member of a family of membrane-associated cytoplasmic proteins that function to organize specialized membrane domains. Recent evidence from our laboratory indicates that the We are also studying the molecular organization and functions of the septate junction, which constitutes the paracellular barrier to diffusion in invertebrate epithelial cells and forms a seal between myelinating Schwann cells (and oligodendrocytes) and axons in the vertebrate nervous system. Septate junctions also are important in maintaining epithelial cell polarity, and play a role in regulating proliferation. To study these complex problems, we use genetic, molecular and biochemical approaches in Drosophila and in mammalian cultured cells.

Our interests center on the molecular mechanisms by which components of signal transduction pathways are organized into specialized membrane domains. In addition to their known role in organizing receptors and downstream effectors into functional signaling complexes, such organized complexes function to integrate signaling activities from multiple pathways and to segregate simultaneous but distinct functions of a single pathway. We study this question in Drosophila because of the utility of this system for studying the functions of individual genes, and for examining the functional interactions between different genes that work together in a particular cellular or developmental process.

David Duke has been many things in his life: Klansman, white-power activist, Louisiana state legislator, candidate for the U.S. Senate, Republican Party head in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. Perhaps the leading figure in the far-right campaign to make notions of racial superiority acceptable to mainstream American, Duke now operates mainly from his Web site, the David Duke Online Report (see accompanying feature ). He has plans for a global Internet radio program, as well as other grandiose schemes. Recently he spoke by telephone from his home office in Louisiana to PreText's Richard Martin. The interview lasted some 90 minutes, much of it taken up with Duke espousing his racist, anti-Semitic, Holocaust revisionist views. Excerpts from the interview follow:
    Martin
: How did you get on the Internet? What led you to take your program online? Duke : I'm always looking for a new medium to express and spread [the] scientific information that I have to the general public. I was doing my radio show but only reaching the radio public in New Orleans. It's a limited audience. I've done talk shows and radio around the U.S., but I'm usually given very little time, and there's always heated opposition. It's hard to really intelligently discuss, to thoroughly develop your ideas. The Internet gives you the opportunity to fully express your ideas, on equal terms to other ideas. People have the opportunity to judge the idea on its face, next to other ideas opposing it. That's what's got people like the [Anti-Defamation League] so worried: for the first time the scientific evidence of racial differences, historical evidence of the Zionist occupation of Palestine, can be fully explored and effectively argued.
