Birthplace:
Minneapolis, Minn.
Douglas was raised in New England and attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts. After working with the Red Cross in Europe during World War I, Douglas moved to Florida in 1915. She became a reporter for her father's newspaper, which would later be renamed the Miami Herald. Stoneman began her editorial career by writing light articles for the society pages, but soon changed to writing hard-hitting editorials on then-controversial subjects including women's rights, racial justice, and conservation. As a newspaper columnist she discovered the cause that would consume her for the remainder of her life: preservation of the Florida Everglades. At a time when many people viewed the Everglades as nothing more that a mosquito-filled swamp, Stoneman wrote articles revealing its beauty and portraying the fascinating plants, birds, animals, fish, reptiles, waterways, and other natural wonders of these vast wetlands. She also joined various committees dedicated to ensuring the survival of the Everglades. In 1947, she published a best-selling book called Everglades: River of Grass.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas Everglades Center

Construction of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Everglades Center can finally begin! A $71,000 grant has been awarded to the Land Trust by Metro Dade County's Community Based Organization Grants Program. The monies will be used to construct Phase I of an environmental education and resource center adjacent to the Coconut Grove home of Marjory Stoneman Douglas. The start of the construction marks a major milestone for the Land Trust. The first project which was undertaken by the Land Trust upon being formed in 1988, was the preservation of Mrs. Douglas' homesite. The Land Trust embarked on a campaign to convince the State of Florida to purchase the house and grant Mrs. Douglas a life estate in the property so that she may continue to reside in the house she built in 1926. The State agreed to the purchase and the life estate and the Land Trust agreed to manage the property as a museum in honor of Mrs. Douglas upon expiration of the life estate. To complete the acquisition of Mrs. Douglas' original homesite and to properly manage Marjory's home, the Land Trust purchased the adjacent property, the Cole House. Due to the close proximity of the houses, this property would provide the space necessary for the Land Trust to establish an office and to provide a residence for an on-site manager. More importantly, the property also provided sufficient space to develop a resource center where visitors could come to learn about Marjory's impact on the environment and culture of South Florida through independent research or in an organized setting. The Center will also be open to public and private schools for field trips and other extra curricular activities.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas By Jerry Wilkinson Marjory Stoneman Douglas was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on April 7, 1890 and brought up with her mother's people in Massachusetts, went to the public school of Taunton, and graduated from Wellesley College, Massachusetts in 1912. Her father's people were Quakers and pioneers. He, Frank Bryant Stoneman attorney and judge, and went to Florida (circa 1909) before she did. He was founder-editor of The Miami Herald following an earlier paper he had started. When Marjory decided to go south circa 1912, as a result of an unworkable marriage, it was wonderful to find a new country with all the excitement of the tropics, a beginning city and a job on a newspaper. She lived with her father and stepmother, Lilla B. (Shine), who was her first and best friend.
She went overseas in the WW1, doing Red Cross publicity out of Paris and came back after a year to be an associate editor for her father. She marched for suffrage in the 1920s while writing books, magazine articles, drama, fiction and poetry.
She always wanted to write fiction. Another new life began when she started selling stories to the
