M.A. Gillies English 806 Approaches to Individual Authors: T.S. Eliot and H.D.: Transatlantic Poets
Spring 2000 American born and raised, Eliot and H.D. spent most of their adult lives living in Europe. There they wrote their most important works and they mingled with the prominent writers and thinkers of the day. Their poetry has been claimed by both British and American critics as central to the development of twentieth century poetics in each country. In this course we will read the poetry of each author to discover the tensions that exist between the poets' American heritage and their European home bases. Though we will read from some of the earlier poetry, the main focus will be on the long poems written in the 40s and 50s: Eliot's Four Quartets and H.D.'s Trilogy . We will also read from their prose works - Eliot's criticism, H.D.'s fiction and criticism - because here they often worked out their own poetics. From this foundation, we will extend outwards, situating their work in the broader context of critical commentary on twentieth century British and American poetics. We will take a number of different critical/theoretical approaches. For example, formalist criticism will allow us to analyze H.D.'s early Imagism and Eliot's allusions and fragmentary verse; materialist and new historicist readings of modernism will provide us with insights into how and why both have assumed such prominent places in the British and American canons; feminist and queer theorists were at the forefront of the revival of H.D.'s work in the late 70s and early 80s and will provide another vantage point for our reading of her poetry. Other approaches will be welcomed and will emerge as the course unfolds. Students will be able to take advantage of the fine modernist holdings in the library's Contemporary Literature Collection and will be encouraged to make use of them in their research papers.

H. D. (Hilda Doolittle)
Biography Hilda Doolittle was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the daughter of a music teacher and an astronomer. When she was fifteen, her father was appointed head of the observatory at the University of Pennsylvania, so the family moved to Philadelphia; there, Doolittle met Ezra Pound, then a student. It was Pound who gave her the pen name "H. D.," which she used for the first time in 1913 when Poetry magazine published three of her poems. With her spare, elegant lyrics; vivid phrasing; concrete, compelling imagery; and short poetic line, H. D. became one of the primary writers of the Imagism movement. Her works include The Walls Do Not Fall Tribute to the Angels The Flowering Rod (1946), and Collected Poems 1912-1944 Explorations The NAAL selections of H. D.'s work show us a poet whose range of interests and voices extends considerably beyond her usual categorization as an "Imagist." Though some of her early poems may seem generically within that mode, the expansion and sophistication of her voice and subject matter after World War I show us an individual talent leaving behind a school of poetry and going in its own direction.

Her romantic mind was like the tiny boxes,
one within the other,
that come from the puzzling East,
however many you discover
there is always one more.

Fragment Thirty-Six - Hilda Doolittle
I know not what to do: my mind is divided. - Sappho
I know not what to do,
my mind is reft:
is song’s gift best?
is love’s gift loveliest? I know not what to do, now sleep has pressed weight on your eyelids. Shall I break your rest, devouring, eager? Is love’s gift best? nay, song’s the loveliest: yet were you lost, what rapture could I take from song? what song were left? I know not what to do: to turn and slake the rage that burns, with my breath burn and trouble your cool breath? so shall I turn and take snow in my arms? (is love’s gift best?) yet flake on flake of snow were comfortless, did you lie wondering, wakened yet unawake. Shall I turn and take comfortless snow within my arms? press lips to lips that answer not
