Lewis Carroll British author of unlikely mathematical descent.
Born in Daresbury, Cheshire, one of 11 children. Even at a mature age, he retained a childlike joy in the absurd. He loved writing stories about the absurd, and he mastered the art of divining a logical procedure from seemingly illogical nonsense.

Dodgson, Charles Lutwidge
Pen name Lewis Carroll.
January 27th, 1832-1898
British mathematician and writer. His stories about Alice, invented to amuse the young daughter of a friend, appear in the classics Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and _Through the Looking-Glass_
Carroll, Lewis Carroll, Lewis, pseud. of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, 1832-98, English writer and mathematician. He lectured on mathematics at Oxford, but his fame rests on the fantasy novels Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1872). These books grew out of stories he told to children, among them Alice Liddell, the daughter of H.G. Liddell, dean of Christ Church, Oxford. An amateur photographer, Carroll photographed children. Belief "One can't believe impossible things.""I daresay you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."
Lewis Carroll (1832-98), English writer, mathematician. Alice and the White Queen, in Through the Looking Glass, ch. 5 (1872).

Lewis Carroll Home Contents Lewis Carroll is well known throughout the world as the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass . Behind the famous pseudonym was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a mathematical lecturer at Oxford University with remarkably diverse talents. Dodgson's boyhood was spent in Newton-by-Daresbury, Cheshire, where he was born on the 27th January 1832, and in Croft, Yorkshire. He spent his adult life in Oxford and died at Guildford in 1898. Besides the Alice books, he wrote many others including poems, pamphlets and articles. He was a skilled mathematician, logician and pioneering photographer and he invented a wealth of games and puzzles which are of great interest today. Through his range of talents he has acquired great respect and has a large following. Charles was the first son, although not the first child, of Rev. C. Dodgson, Vicar of Daresbury and his wife Frances Jane nee Lutwidge. Not much is known about young Charles - or his family for that matter - during this period although it is known that the Dodgson's had a connection with Cheshire that spanned more than a decade and in the case of Charles Lutwidge this covered eleven years (1832-43) The "world", young and impressionable Charles Lutwidge Dodgson came into was that of rural Cheshire and it was a landscape and a way of life untouched by the great changes that were then occurring elsewhere in the North and other parts of the British Isles. No "Satanic mills" could be found there least not Newton-by-Daresbury and the immediate surroundings, and this was to be the setting for young Charles for the first eleven years of his life.

Lewis Carroll's real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and he was born, the son of a country clergyman, on January 27 1832. As a young boy he gave signs of the tastes, the bent of mind, that came out so clearly in later life. He made pets of snails and frogs; he was constantly inventing games for his brothers and sisters; he built a small theatre with dolls as the actors, moving them around the stage by means of strings; he performed tricks of magic dressed in a brown wig and long white robe; he started a home magazine for which he wrote poems and plays, illustrating them himself with his own comical and spirited drawings. After some years at a private school he went to the famous school at Rugby and then, at 18, entered the Oxford College, Christ Church. There he spent the rest of his life as a lecturer in mathematics. For the next fifty years he led a sort of double life. As the Rev. C. L. Dodgson (he had become a clergyman) was teaching mathematics and writing textbooks, Lewis Carroll was writing verses for comic papers and stories for children. Alice in Wonderland

Although Dodgson was undoubtedly a great photographer, he is probably best remembered as the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland , published under the pseudonym of Lewis Carroll, a name based on a Latinised reversal of his first two names, Charles Lutwidge. The corrected impression of 1865 received admiring reviews, and sales increased steadily. The first German and French translations were published in 1869. A sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and what Alice found there , appeared as a Christmas book for 1871, although bearing the publication date of 1872 on the title-page. Neither 'Alice' book has ever gone out of print, and they have been translated into over seventy languages. Dodgson's other works for children ( Phantasmagoria and Other Poems The Hunting of the Snark Sylvie and Bruno Sylvie and Bruno concluded , 1893) never achieved quite the same popularity.
