An Interview with Paul Di Filippo
by Jeff VanderMeer INTRODUCTION One of the great pleasures of my stint as a Philip K. Dick Award judge in 1998 was reading a book called Lost Pages by Paul Di Filippo. Although I had read individual Di Filippo stories before, I'd never really understood the extent of Paul's comic, pacing, and stylistic genius. In Lost Pages , Paul postulates alternative lives for writers such as Philip K. Dick and also mimics their styles. The book was funny, wise, tongue-in-cheek, respectful of its subject matter, and just wonderful. The effect of reading it was similar to the effect of a cold glass of water after a hot day spent mowing the lawn . Lost Pages wound up being the runner up for the Philip K. Dick Award and garnering all sorts of praise from critics. Since then, I've read a lot more of Di Filippo's workincluding the marvelous Steampunk Trilogy and I've come to the conclusion that the man can do just about anything he wants writing-wise. He's a polyglot and a protean talent. Other works include Joe's Liver, Ciphers

Interview: Paul Di Filippo
Paul Di Filippo As a child, were you a voracious reader? Paul Di Filippo: Indeed, reading was my primary pleasure and joy, which is not to say that I was a pasty-faced, housebound bookworm. I loved being outdoors, often spending hours roaming across the semi-rural, semi-suburban landscapes of Rhode Island, alone and with various schoolchums, playing "war," building "forts," all that good stuff. But this activity often paled when I was presented with the opportunity to visit one of the three or four libraries, which my mother insured we patronized on a regular basis. And I had a favorite green vinyl chair with aluminum armrests that I can still feel and smell, from which I launched many a fictional voyage. CL: What did you read then? PDF: I read tons of comics first of all, starting in Grade 2. Dr. Seuss of course. Then I graduated to series books like the Hardy Boys and Tom Swift. Believe it or not, I also loved those "girly" books that concerned kids who owned horses and had horse riding clubs. Then in Grade 5 or thereabouts I discovered the pure quill, genre SF, with an early standout book being Raymond Jones's The Year When Stardust Fell.

Working for a Living in Alternate Worlds: Strange Trades by Paul Di Filippo
Reviewed by Amy O'Loughlin
Work is a temporary aberration in the history of our species.
Arthur C. Clarke, quoted in the introduction to "The Boredom Factory" by Paul Di Filippo A ccording to Paul Di Filippo, Strange Trades his fifth and newest collection of speculative fiction short stories, is a "volume that strives to offer balanced portraits of a variety of vocations and workplaces, and attitudes toward same." Humph. Sounds a little humdrum and uninspiring, doesn't it? Well, Strange Trades is anything but commonplace or lackluster. And Di Filippo's out-of-(writerly)-character and somewhat bland categorization of his volume of eleven stories is the tamest phrasing you'll find in the dynamic, mind-expanding Strange Trades. As the father of ribofunk speculative fiction, Di Filippo makes his Strange Trades progeny fulfill his coinage's criteria: Ribofunk art doesn't prohibit, but allows. Doesn't tease, but delivers. Doesn't bore, but excites. Isn't cool and distanced, but hot and intimate. Always comes down on the side of change and chaos (the essence of Life), not stasis and predictability (the definition of death).

Little Doors
by Paul Di Filippo
reviewed by Mike Atherton I've never come across Paul Di Filippo before so I had the happy experience of reading Little Doors cold. I have since learned he is quite a popular sci-fi writer in the states and is noted for his steampunk novels and often mentioned alongside such authors as Philip K Dick and William Gibson. There is little of Gibson in this collection but I can see why the K Dick comparisons are just. Di Filippo takes risks in his writing and not only makes the most absurd situations seem plausible he also injects them with a loving amount of humour. Little Doors is a short story collection (16 stories and one poem to be precise) and as with most collections it has its high and low points. The titular opening story for example is wonderful - the tale of an academic and his unhappy lover who discover how powerful stories can be and how many different doors that can be opened by them. I began reading this on a train journey but the story was pulled from my grasp by my girlfriend who had been reading over my shoulder and was desperate to have it all to herself. Other stories such as 'My Two Best Friends', although well written, seem to be simple gags stretched out over 9 or 10 pages. When Di Filippo gets it right though he really gets it right. 'Moloch' is one of the nastiest stories I've read in a long time and the only one in the collection bereft of humour. 'Billy' manages some quite surreal imagery very well in the tale of a boy who is, quite literally, born without a brain and manages to rise to the highest post in the land thanks to the puppet-mastery of a spider, a rat and a parrot who secretly inhabit his empty cranium. Funny and satirical in equal measure, it was written during the Reagan administration but sadly works perhaps even better today.

Paul Di Filippo Paul Di Filippo plies a strange trade. He writes science fiction short stories. Lots of them. Weird ones. Funny ones. Postmodern funky ones. Cutting-edge punky ones. Engaged and thoughtful ones. In his fifth collection, Strange Trades , he turns his speculative savoir faire towards the realm of work. These 12 stories all revolve around the jobs people hold in the author’s imagined futures. These jobs include nightclub singer, sandwich shop owner, messenger, government security agent, member of the Urban Conservation Corps, ethical entrepreneur, office worker, telekinetic surgeon, factory slave in a feudal economy, and, in "The Boredom Factory", the ultimate meaningless cog in a post-industrial, production-obsessed society. Some of these jobs may sound familiar, but in Di Filippo’s imaginative hands, they lead anywhere but to the expected. The collection is anchored by three novellas. Some may find "The Mill" more accessible, but it struck me as overly long and bland, the only story here bereft of Di Filippo’s sparkling voice. However, the other two, "Spondulix" and "Karuna, Inc.", like most stories of this collection, are cognitive assaults in the true Di Filippo manner.

39. Lost Pages By Paul Di Filippo
Lost Pages by paul di filippo. Literary trickster paul di filippo openshis latest mischievous offering – a collection of stories
http://lostpages.net/pdflost.html
Lost Pages
by Paul Di Filippo Literary trickster Paul Di Filippo opens his latest mischievous offering – a collection of stories exploring alternate, fictional lives of 20th-century writers – with an “essay” entitled “What Killed Science Fiction?” attributed to one “Dr. Josiah Carberry.” In it, the “scholar” discusses the title’s obscure literary genre and the history of its demise. “Dr. Carberry” boldly goes where no scholar has gone before, asserting: “And the name of SF’s nemesis was Star Trek .” This short-lived mid-60s series (starring Bela Lugosi as alien Officer Strock, Mickey Rooney as Engineer Spotty, and Jayne Mansfield as Communications Lieutenant Impura) was so embarrassingly abysmal that anything vaguely science-fictional could no longer be taken seriously. Sadly, this farce isn’t far from reality.... Two stories share a premise: What if the protagonist had emigrated to the USA? In “The Jackdaw’s Last Case” Franz Kafka is a pseudonymous lovelorn columnist for a romance pulp magazine by day and a gun-toting Shadow-like costumed vigilante by night. Di Filippo colours this story with evocative constructivist imagery, creating a beautiful mood piece in which Kafka ultimately attains salvation from the demons that ate away at him in our world. In “Anne,” the young Ms Frank writes her diaries not while hiding from the Nazis, but in a lush Hollywood setting while playing Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz and suffering through a dysfunctional marriage to Mickey Rooney. The Kafka is a piece of rapturous beauty, while the Anne Frank is simply an entertainment, albeit a delightfully amusing one.
