"A strange artifact, invaluable for the relief into which it throws the decisions Los Angeles made, consciously and unconsciously, as it groped its way through the 20th century. Magnificent in its breadth and daring, it is also bizarre and even worrisome in many of its details." LA Weekly Eden by Design is a compelling and fascinating description of a possible Los Angeles that never came to be. Greg Hise and William Deverell have resurrected the Olmsted Brothers' 1930 plan for Los Angeles County, and then, in a wonderful introduction, put the plan in context so that to read it now is to see not only what seemed dangerous and possible in 1930 but also how and why one route to the present was chosen over others. In their hands, the plan acts like a ghost of Los Angeles, reminding us about a vanished past, lost possibilities, and the secrets that our present masks."Richard White, author of The Organic Machine "The Report is not only a vital document in the history of Los Angeles . . . but a lost classic of a neglected golden age of city planning and landscape architecture. . . . It embodies a truly regional perspective; an ecological perspective; a long-range vision; an integration of design with finance and administration; and a truly grand interpretation of public space. It deserves to be known to every serious student of the American planning tradition."Robert Fishman, author of

"Deverell's book will immediately become the one to reckon with in the future historiography of the railroad in California."R. Hal Williams, Southern Methodist University DESCRIPTION (back to top) Nothing so changed nineteenth-century America as did the railroad. Growing up together, the iron horse and the young nation developed a fast friendship. Railroad Crossing is the story of what happened to that friendship, particularly in California, and it illuminates the chaos that was industrial America from the middle of the nineteenth century through the first decade of the twentieth. Americans clamored for the progress and prosperity that railroads would surely bring, and no railroad was more crucial for California than the transcontinental line linking East to West. With Gold Rush prosperity fading, Californians looked to the railroad as the state's new savior. But social upheaval and economic disruption came down the tracks along with growth and opportunity. Analyzing the changes wrought by the railroad, William Deverell reveals the contradictory roles that technology and industrial capitalism played in the lives of Americans. That contrast was especially apparent in California, where the gigantic corporate "Octopus"the Southern Pacific Railroadheld near-monopoly status. The state's largest employer and biggest corporation, the S.P. was a key provider of jobs and transportationand wielder of tremendous political and financial clout.

Date Reviewed: 12/12/2001 Reviewed by: Ron Corbett When I was about four or five one of my aunts used to let me play with her Matroyska or Russian Nesting Doll. This doll was actually 10 identical dolls stacked inside each other. I spent hours taking them all out and trying to get them back in their proper places. The Laughing Falcon, a mystery by the Canadian author William Deverell, is a literary Matroyska. You, the reader, are never quite sure where the next piece of the story fits. Trying to figure out this puzzle becomes a challenge and an adventure as the author drags you into his world of corrupt politics, terrorism, chicanery and romance. Maggie, the heroine, is a farm girl from Saskatchewan who writes copy for the local television and romance novels in her spare time. Her companions include a presidential candidate, Vegas dancer, ex CIA agent turned eco- entrepreneur and lawyer/con artist. While the supporting cast is large, character development is superb and identities never become blurred The story begins and ends in Saskatoon while most of the action occurs in the steamy jungles of Costa Rico. Deverell takes you on a wild, hilarious and suspenseful ride through steamy jungles, up rock covered landscapes and down treacherous white waters. On this literary roller coaster you come face to face with skinks, spider monkeys and the stinky white-collared peccaries.

Fall 2000 Luois Nelson Dyble's comments:
This reading seminar was a requirement for history majors at UC Berkeley. This section had twelve students, all juniors and seniors. Although the reading assignments were unusually long and there was some fatigue toward the end of the semester, for the most part the students seemed to enjoy the discussions. The major goal of the course was to develop students' critical perspective and to improve their ability to identify the primary thesis in each work.

Western Environmental History
California Institute of Technology
Winter 1994 "The West did not provide what they needed. Make-believe fandangos, transvestite laundresses, hydrophobic wolves, ant-fights, crazed foreigners, pretty sunsetsthis was not enough. The West was not dull, it was stupendously dull, and when it was not dull it was murderous. A man could get killed without realizing it. There were unbelievable flash floods, weird snakes, and God Himself did not know what else, along with Indians descending as swiftly as the funnel of a tornado." Evan S. Connell This course will examine the history of the American West through the prism of the use, understanding, and meaning of the environment. We will range broadly across both time and space and, through course readings, lectures, discussions and your own writing, learn ways in which to conceptualize "the West," "the environment," and "environmental history." And we will come to some understanding as to the ways in which those things have been and continue to be inextricably linked. We will also examine the historical roots of conservationism and the environmental crisis as well as the degree to which that crisis is expressed in politics. Our analysis of western environmental history will continually focus on the ways in which power has been utilized across the West as well as the ramifications of that use as far as the natural landscape is concerned. There are six required texts in this class, and they are a combination of personal memoirs and historical analyses of the West and environmental issues. There is also a required course reader. The six books (in no particular order) are:
